1,China has come online with smartphones at an incredible rate, and this has it on pace to rule the world when it comes to spending on smartphone and tablet games.

The Asian superpower is set to generate approximately $6.5 billion in revenues this year with games like Hearthstone taking a respectable chunk of that, according to industry intelligence firms Newzoo and TalkingData. That’s more than triple the $1.8 billion the country generated for mobile games in 2013, and it’s also up significantly from the $4.4 billion in 2014. And that growth has the country primed to displace the United States as the most lucrative mobile-gaming territory on Earth. This spike in growth in China as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ have found significant success in that market, and this — combined with Android’s existing popularity — has more Chinese people playing games on their smartphones than ever before. With worldwide spending on iOS, Android, and other phone platforms set to reach $30.1 billion this year, China alone will make up more than 20 percent of that.

Newzoo predicts the U.S. will generate around $6 billion, so more than 40 percent of mobile spending worldwide happens in these two countries. This is why more developers are trying to build games that are easier to localize and make appealing to audiences both in the East and West. But it’s not as easy as building a universally appealing game, and that’s because the Chinese market is still such a labyrinth.(source:venturebeat.com

2,Yu Suzuki’s new startup Ys Net has received $4.9 million in pledges on its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to develop Shenmue III, the third-highest amount for any video game on the crowdfunding site.

Suzuki unveiled the campaign to bring back the epic role-playing series at Sony’s press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in mid-June. The news got a roar of applause, and the campaign raised $2 million in its first 10 hours. Even at $4.9 million, the Shenmue is just behind Ouya ($8.6 million) and another Japanese game, Castlevania creator Koji Igarashi’s Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night ($5.5 million) for the highest total in Kickstarter game history. Now the campaign has about 57 hours to go. To stoke demand, Suzuki released this video.(source:venturebeat.com

3,We’ve just caught wind of a big new game that we’ll find out more about in a couple of weeks: Angry Birds 2 is coming, and Rovio is making a huge announcement in San Francisco on July 28th. The character designs appear to be a bit modified, though not like the more anthropomorphic versions you’ll see in the film. Still, it looks like there’s some changes ahead of us:

This is far from the second Angry Birds game, but it’s kind of like Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in that it’s supposed to stand for a monumental event in the franchise that they decided to add a number to the original game. I don’t know what exact number Angry Birds 2 would be if every other game had a sequel number, and there’s Angry Birds Star Wars 2 [Free] to boot. But Rovio looks like they’re not playing around with this one. You’ll be sure to hear more as we find out about it.(source:toucharcade.com
