1,Plague Inc [$0.99] became a particualarly curious game over the past few months as panic fear over Ebola spread throughout the globe. Well, the gmae that simulates global outbreaks managed to use its platform to raise money to fight Ebola, with over $76,000 raised so far to various charities, such as The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Socieities. While the brunt of the Ebola epidemic remains contained to West Africa, the game showed

how a pandemic like that can spread globally – even the CDC has used Plague Inc. to talk about how diseases spread.

It’s pretty cool that a game like this can be used to raise awareness and money for a disease that’s affecting so many people, even if the fear of Ebola in America was perhaps overblown. Ebola isn’t actually a disease you can unlock in Plague Inc. But hey, I’d rather kill people with simian flu. Or, the deadliest disease of them all:(source:toucharcade

2,The gaming media is ready to take another hit, as AOL-owned blog Joystiq appears set for closure. Re/code cited “numerous sources” with the news that the gaming blog would be shut down in the coming weeks as part of an AOL “house-cleaning” for its various content properties.

That put Joystiq news content director Alexander Sliwinski in the odd position of reporting on rumors of his own site’s closure, something he did with the help of unidentified staffers.

“Sources tell Joystiq that the staff is aware of the closure, but corporate hasn’t officially told them, so they are unable to acknowledge anything out of concern that it will cause immediate shutdown,” Sliwinski wrote. “We’ve reached out for more information. We will update, as we always have, when we know more.”

The news is the latest in a series of recent closures and layoffs for the online gaming media. Last year saw layoffs at GameSpot, Polygon, Machinima, and Future (which closed Official Nintendo Magazine and CVG), and 2015 got off to a similar start with Defy Media last week announcing layoffs across all of its gaming websites, including The Escapist, GameFront, and Game Trailers.

Joystiq was launched in 2004 as part of the Weblogs network of sites that also included Engadget and TV Squad. AOL purchased the network in October of 2005. The Joystiq staff page lists 13 editorial employees.(source:gamesindustry

3,Wooga’s CEO has explained why the older female demographic is being underserved by puzzle games, and given an insight into the company’s hardcore concept process in a recent interview.

“This demographic – women 40 and older – is underserved on the app stores. You see lots of action and strategy games geared toward men. But for women 40 and older we have puzzle games – Candy Crush or Jelly Splash – and not much besides that,” Jens Begemann told GamesBeat.

“If you look at what this audience watches on TV, it’s drama, things like Downton Abbey. Not much on mobile is story driven or character driven. That’s what we want to create.”

Wooga’s attempt at harnessing this “ladies who love drama” category is Agent Alice, a hidden object game that is out next month and mixes simple puzzles with object spotting. It’s not out until February 26 but the game already has 125,258 Likes on Facebook.

“Last year we created more than 100 concepts. That’s more than 100 concepts on paper. Out of those, we created 35 prototypes. One of those 35 prototypes is Agent Alice,” Begemann said.(source:gamesindustry

4,The average time spent playing mobile games in 2014 increased by 57 percent compared to 2012, according to a report from industry intelligence group The NPD Group. The organization’s study reveals that people spent about 3 hours every day playing games on their iPhones, Android, and tablets. In 2012, that was 2 hours, 20 minutes. While phones are a big part of this trend, it’s actually the larger tablets that are leading the increase in game time. The NPD notes that not only do people spend more time playing games on tablets, but these gamers are also more likely to spend money. That’s a good thing for the industry, and it is a big reason why mobile gaming has grown into a $25 billion market.

“Continued mobile growth will stem from existing customers paying more to play, especially in the free-to-play portion of the market,” NPD industry analyst Liam Callahan said. “A positive sign of consumer behavior trending this way is the fact that more than twice the number of app gamers reported making an in-game purchase than they did when we conducted this study two years ago.”(source:venturebeat.com

5,Electronic Arts figured out digital and mobile in 2014.

The publisher reported that it made $2.18 billion in digital revenue last year. That is a record for the company, and it makes up about half of the $4.34 billion it generated during the 12 month period. For EA, the digital revenues came from mobile hits like Madden NFL Mobile and SimCity BuildIt. But the company got strong digital sales from its full console and PC games as well as add-on content for console and PC games like FIFA 15 and Madden NFL 15.

SimCity BuildIt in particular racked up a strong performance to finish off 2014. It debuted on iOS and Android in December, and it quickly surpassed 22 million downloads. EA pointed out that it was one of the top five most downloaded games in more than 100 different countries.(source:venturebeat.com
