1,A new report from mobile marketing company Fiksu has revealed that the App Store has broken its download volume records for the third month in a row.

On top of this, the data also showed that the cost of acquiring loyal users has risen by 20 percent compared to year ago.

It would seem that while demand for free iOS apps is increasing, brand marketers are cranking up the costs of acquiring those individuals through the holiday season.

According to the report, the top 200 free iOS aps averaged daily download volumes of 9.2 million in December 2014 – a big increase from November’s 8.1 million and October’s 7.8 million.

This was also a 44 percent boost compared to the same period in 2013.

Spiralling costs

It’s good news for app developers and marketers. But it comes bundled with the fact that the Fiksu CPLU (cost per loyal user index – which measures the cost of acquiring a user who opens an app at least three times) increased 33 percent month-on-month to $2.10 in December.

According to Fiksu CEO Micah Adler, this pace of growth is “an indicator of what we call the ‘new reality of apps.’”

In a statement he said “Consumer demand across iOS and Android is rising, which draws significant attention from major brands who are putting cost pressure on the games and other mobile-first apps.”(source:pocketgamer.biz

2,Elite: Dangerous studio Frontier has announced redundancies at its UK offices after a move to shift development away from its Nova Scotia operation.

“With its business emphasis now on two major self-published franchises, Elite: Dangerous and Coaster Park Tycoon, Frontier is re-focusing its development activities in Cambridge where the expertise in these franchises lies,” said the company in a note to investors.

“Development roles are being moved from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Cambridge, and the overall staffing mix will be changed to match the needs of these two projects. 15 content creation roles have been made redundant in Cambridge (from 281 total headcount), while Frontier continues to recruit in areas such as game and technology programming, server and web front end development.”

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Frontier to find out what this means for the Nova Scotia office going forward and will update this story once we get a
response.

Frontier announced the Nova Scotia office in August 2012 citing talented graduates and a local indie development scene.

In June last year the company hired an additional 50 members of staff to its operations, with some of those joining the Nova Scotia team. At the time the company said the studio was at work on its first new IP.(source:gamesindustry.biz

3,Microsoft today announced its second-quarter results for the holiday period ended December 31, 2014, and overall revenues grew 8 percent from $24.5 billion to $26.5 billion while profits declined 9 percent as the company’s earnings per share fell from $0.78 to $0.71.

The Devices and Consumer division, which is home to Xbox, Surface, phone hardware and more, increased its revenues 8 percent to $12.9 billion. That being said, the Computing and Gaming Hardware revenue specifically fell 11 percent to $473 million, due in part to lower revenue from the Xbox platform and “due to customer preference for new generation of consoles,” which meant fewer Xbox 360 sales year-over-year. Ultimately, Microsoft’s total Xbox platform revenue
fell by 20 percent to $703 million.

Microsoft said that Xbox console sales totaled 6.6 million units and cited “strong holiday season performance,” but it’s unclear if that’s Xbox 360 and Xbox One combined (likely) and it’s also not specified as sold through or sold-in to retail, but we suspect sold-in. GamesIndustry.biz has contacted Microsoft to clarify. Also, for the sake of comparison, Sony recently said that it sold 4.1 million PS4 consoles during its holiday period. (Update: Yes, the 6.6 million was sold-in, Microsoft confirmed.)

For the company as a whole, Microsoft boasted that commercial cloud revenue grew by triple-digits for the sixth consecutive quarter, reaching an annualized revenue run rate of $5.5 billion, and the buzz from its Windows 10 and HoloLens conference last week has been strong.(source:gamesindustry.biz
