每日观察:关注暴雪以乐趣不足取消Titan项目9.24

1,据Gamasutra引述Polygon的消息称暴雪首席执行官Mike Morhaime已经确认旗下研发7年之久的MMO项目Titan正式取消。

而取消的理由看起来也是轻描淡写:找不到玩得尽兴的理由。早先暴雪也曾取消过两个项目,分别是Warcraft Adventures和StarCraft Ghost。

这一次取消至少在表面上看起来挺酷的。事实上大家都知道暴雪有多失望(7年的花费肯定也是个天文数字),用户有多失望(期待中的大项目没了)。

2,据Gamesbrief的整理显示Zynga按照Q2的数据能够梳理到:月活跃用户1亿3000万,月独立用户8900万,月独立付款用户数170万。

在过去的一年,Zynga的用户付费转化率在1.6%到1.9%之间。

3,据insidesocialgames的消息称在Facebook平台有一款 Yacko出品的Minecraft仿制游戏 iLands。

当然这款号称免费的山寨游戏还有一个3.99美元的收费项目,这个收费项目包括解锁部分功能、移除广告和加快建设速度。

前不久这款Facebook游戏也移植到了ios和Android平台。

4,据insidemobileapps的消息称EA Sports日前向移动平台推出了新款足球游戏FIFA 15 Ultimate Team。

1,Blizzard in the past has been open with its willingness to cancel ambitious development projects that were not meeting internal standards.

Now, the World of Warcraft developer has shown a new level of willingness to cut its losses, as Blizzard confirmed the cancellation of the seven-year MMO project Titan.

Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime told Polygon that the developer simply “didn’t find the fun.” The studio said last year it would reevaluate Titan and its viability as a major new MMO.

“We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that’s the game we really wanted to be making,” Morhaime told Polygon. “The answer is no.”

Past notable, public Blizzard cancellations include Warcraft Adventures and StarCraft Ghost. Morhaime noted that Titan was never “officially” announced, but Blizzard has been relatively open with talking about what would’ve been Blizzard’s second MMO, after the industry-changing World of Warcraft.

Blizzard SVP of story and franchise development Chris Metzen said canceling games that were deep in development, yet on the wrong track, results in “letter-quality work.”

Metzen added, “We took a step back and realized that it had some cool hooks. It definitely had some merit as a big, broad idea, but it didn’t come together. It did not distill.”(source:gamasutra

2,So Zynga’s conversion rate is between 1.6% and 1.9%. But what does that actually mean? I’m struggling a little to find out. In their annual 10K filing, they don’t mention conversion rate at all. In the quarterly 10Q filing, the company provides the following information for the three months ending 30th June 2014.

Average Monthly Active Users (MAUs): 130 million
Average Monthly Unique Users (MUUs): 89 million
Average Monthly Unique Payers (MUPs): 1.7 million.
I can’t make these numbers end up at 1.9%. MAUs/MUPs comes to 1.3% and MUUs/MUPs comes to 2.1%. I can’t find any definition of conversion rate in the company’s SEC filings (its S-1 registration statement, its annual 10K or its quarterly 10Q).

So this figure could be the Quarterly Unique Users (or Active Users) divided by the Quarterly Unique Payers. Or it could be the Daily Payers/DAUs, averaged out over the quarter. Or it could be something else. For now, I am going to say that Zynga has a conversion rate of just under 2% and fudge it.(source: gamesbrief.com

3,Fans of Minecraft that don’t want to pay for the game have Yacko’s iLands on Facebook as an alternative. In this persistent 3D game, players are given a rotating selection of block types for free each week, or can pay one price to unlock them all. Once they’re ready to build, players use the scroll wheel or the number keys to select their block type, and simply click to place them in the world, building small and quaint or grand and impressive structures, one
block at a time.

Movement is controlled with the arrow keys or WASD keys, while space allows one to jump. Right-clicking enables delete mode, which allows players to delete any blocks they’ve placed, or those that came stock in the game world itself. There’s no item quantity to deal with, like in Survival mode of Minecraft. Instead, this can be thought of as a creative building experience, complete with contests on the game’s fan page, searching for the best builds.

In addition to building, players can simply explore the land, discovering trees, caves, ponds, oceans and more, like in Minecraft. However, there isn’t a need to do so, as deleting trees doesn’t reward players with extra wood, for instance.

For $3.99, players unlock the full block inventory, remove ads, and receive fly mode for building structures faster. Without this, players must jump manually to reach high platforms, which can be time consuming on larger builds.

iLands is available to play for free on Facebook, and is also available on Android and iOS devices. The iOS game launched on September 9.(source: insidesocialgames.com

4,EA Mobile and EA Sports have announced the launch of FIFA 15 Ultimate Team on mobile devices. This year’s game focuses on the most popular mode from the FIFA franchise, Ultimate Team, and allows users to collect and trade their favorite football stars and build their own fantasy team. The game features over 10,000 players from over 500 licensed teams, as well as over 30 real leagues and stadiums.

Players start with a squad of players from one of four card packs. From there, they can compete in multiple kinds of games, either playing games manually or completing quick simulation matches in which the AI controls both teams and players can impact their squad from the sideline. This includes managing substitutions and gauging team effort, among other options. The results in these matches are said to “depend entirely on your ability to manage player skills and chemistry.”

While playing a full game, users have access to two control schemes: casual and classic. In casual, users are presented with a simple control layout, comprised of a static virtual joystick on the left side of the screen, and buttons for sprinting, passing, shooting, press & tackle, and more on the right.
