1,One of the defining tower defense games on iOS has been Kingdom Rush [Free / $2.99 (HD)], whose mixture of hero-based gameplay and standard tower defense elements has helped make the game a success across three separate entries so far. While it’s hard to imagine many TouchArcade readers who haven’t checked out at least one entry in the series – particularly as they’ve gone on sale or free at various points – if you haven’t, and want to see what the fuss is all about, Ironhide Games has announced that the first Kingdom Rush is now free-to-play forever.

The game is still supported by in-app purchases, primarily for additional heroes that you can buy instead of unlock, so it’s not difficult to see where this could still make Ironhide some money, possibly even more than before. The previous games have all been apparent hits, so this could be an experiment from Ironhide to see if they can go full free-to-play for a future title. Or hey, maybe they’re just trying to coax a bit more of a long tail out of a game that’s several years old now.(source:toucharcade.com)

2,Felix Kjellberg, better known by his YouTube alias PewDiePie, has become the first person to score over 10 billion views on YouTube.

The 25 year old announced the news on social media on Sunday.

Today we made history! 10 billion views! THIS IS INSANE. Thank you all so much! Kisses pic.twitter.com/L3Td2HMX4N

— Felix Kjellberg (@pewdiepie) September 6, 2015
He started the PewDiePie YouTube account in April 2010 and now has 39,196,804 subscribers who gather to watch his mix of comedic videos and unconventional game walkthroughs.

Kjellberg has starred in South Park episodes and has been credited with boosting the sales of a number of games, including McPixel and Goat Simulator. In 2014 the Wall Street Journal reported he commands $4 million in ad sales a year.(source:gamesindustry.biz

3,One thing all free-to-play games need is an item or resource that people will want to repeatedly pay money for, and digital card games have found that in their booster packs.

The people who spend money on digital card games spend around $90 per year, according to the gamer-polling company RapidPolls. If you include people who never spend any money, that average drops to a respectable $38.53. This shows the health and potential of this segment of free-to-play games. Digital card games like Hearthstone and Solforge have turned the card-based gaming market into a $1.2 billion business worldwide in 2014, and that’s expected to grow to $1.3 billion by the end of this year.

RapidPolls asked 400 collectible-card-game players about their habits, and it found that most of the spending comes from people who spend more than $250 and people who spend between $25 and $100 ever year.

“As is typical in free-to-play spending, the highest spending ‘whales’ account for most of the total revenue,” reads the RapidPolls report. “The top 12 percent of card pack purchasers — people who spent $250 or more per year — accounted for 50 percent of the total spending on digital card packs.”

Whales only make up around 5 percent of the total number of CCG players. A larger group of around 20 percent of people spend between $25 to $100 and make up for around 30 percent of the spending.(source:venturebeat.com

4,With global accolades and a few game of the year awards under its belt, Tilting Point had big success with its paid game Leo’s Fortune.

Considering its price tag, you might expect the publisher to do a talk at Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki on the perks of the premium gaming business. Instead, VP product strategy Jesse Divinch focussed his talk on free-to-play.

He started by highlighting the uniqueness of mobile as a platform where the balance between skill and the illusion of skill shifts.

Walk the tightrope

“As gamers and developers we love skill in games. We love the competitive factor, the subtlety of skill that excites us. This doesn’t translate well to mobile. For the most part it’s the illusion of skill that works well in mobile,” he says.

While player may think that they’re “good at” Candy Crush, the reality is that progression is largely dependent on how much time and money you’ve put into the game.

Divnich points to the top 30 F2P games charts where he finds that while 19 give the illusion of skill, only three are skill-based (the rest are casino-based.)

“We did Leo’s Fortune, and we’re very happy,” Divinch recalls.(source:pocketgamer.biz
