1,A new report from Newzoo shows that the top 25 game companies by revenue have made over $25 billion in the first six months of this year, a 17 per cent rise of $3 billion compared to the same period last year.

Asian gaming companies made up 49 per cent of the total revenues of the 25 companies, with Tencent coming out on top and way ahead of its nearest rival.

“For the first half of 2014 Tencent’s revenues are an impressive 50 per cent higher than the number 2 in the world: EA,” said Newzoo’s report.

“The main reasons that EA did well in the first half of 2014 are the strong performance of flagship titles FIFA 14, Titanfall and Battlefield 4 in combination with successful mobile ttles: Real Racing 3, The Sims Freeplay, FIFA Ultimate Team and ‘evergreen” Simpsons’ Tapped Out.

“It will be a tight race towards the end of the year considering the traditionally strong last quarter of Microsoft, Sony and Activision Blizzard.”(source: gamesindustry

2,Ubisoft has opened an office in Moscow, which will provide community development and support to the Russian market, and grow the company’s sales in the region.

The decision to establish an official presence in Russia is a response to demand for Ubisoft’s games, the company said. The beta for The Crew, for example, saw more active Russian players than any other country.

“What we’ve seen throughout our time in the region is that Russian players are passionate, vocal and committed to the games they love,” said Ubisoft’s European boss Alain Corre. “Establishing an office in Moscow demonstrates our commitment to Russian gamers, and will help us grow in lockstep with this rapidly expanding market.”

The Moscow office will be led by Olga Lazareva, who previously oversaw business development in Russia for EA. That means more player focused events in the country through a network of community managers, and better localisation of Ubisoft’s products.(source:gamesindustry

3,Free-to-play, mobile, and browser game developer Goodgame studios has welcomed hired its 1000th employee, cementing the firm’s status as the largest game software developer in Germany.

Since it set up shop five years ago, Goodgame has grown exponentially, with the German outfit hiring over 400 people in the last 12 months alone.Perhaps more shocking is the fact that Goodgame is still looking for several hundred new recruits, and, while the company has explained it is looking for talent in all areas, it has also revealed that mobile client developers and online marketers are “especially in demand”.

Natural selection

Dr. Christian Wawrzinek, the COO and co-founder of Goodgame Studios, has explained that while such growth might seem overly ambitious to outsiders, it is, in fact, essential.

“We’re convinced that this targeted increase in staff is necessary for the lasting and sustainable growth of the company,” said Wawrzinek.

Despite the large number of new employees, we have extremely rigorous standards when selecting staff and only hire around 1.5% of all applicants.

“We also search for the best talent all around the globe in order to meet our high demand.”(source:pocketgamer

4,ngry Birds developer Rovio is has let go of 16 percent of its workforce – or 130 staff.

According to outgoing CEO Mikael Hed, the layoffs are a direct result of Rovio building a team based on ‘assumptions of faster growth’: growth that has yet to materialise.

“We work in businesses that are so fast moving that the only constant is change. At Rovio we have always been innovative and forward-looking, and to succeed we need to be the best at adapting to change,” explained Hed, speaking via a company blog post.

“We are an entrepreneurial company and have been exploring multiple areas. We have been building our team on assumptions of faster growth than have materialised.”

Angry staff

Hed justified the move by explaining that it’s better to let staff members go now rather than give them false hope.

Indeed, with the firm now looking to focus on three key business areas, Hed believes that the decision, while regrettable, was, in fact, inevitable.

“We announced today that we plan to simplify our organisation around our three key businesses with the highest growth potential: games, media, and consumer products.”(source:pocketgamer
