1)Size Of Japan’s Market For Mobile Content Reaches US$8.8 Billion In 2012. Games: US$5.1 Billion.

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Japan’s Mobile Content Forum (MCF) has issued a new report that includes a number of interesting statistics on this country’s mobile industry.

According to the MCF, Japan’s market for mobile gaming reached roughly US$5.1 billion in 2012.

I translated the key information of the report into English.

According to the MCF, the market for mobile commerce and content combined in Japan was sized at 2.3507 trillion yen in 2012 (US$24.4 billion), up a very handsome 23% from 2011.

Within that US$24.4 billion market, mobile content accounted for US$8.8 billion:

The market just for mobile content in Japan in 2012 was still bigger on feature phones (US$5 billion), but it contracted by 27% when compared to a year before.

That difference was overcompensated by the respective market on smartphones, which grew 4.6-fold year-on-year to reach US$3.8 billion:

What about games inside this mobile content market?

The size of the market for gaming on feature phones in Japan in 2012 reached around US$2.4 billion: roughly US$2 billion for social games, and another US$410 million for mobile games (titles that are not distributed through social gaming networks like GREE or Mobage).

Observe how both sub-segments shrank year-on-year on feature phones:

On the smartphone side, the gaming segment reached US$2.7 billion for all game-related content (here, the MCF doesn’t make a special distinction).

This segment on smartphones grew 5.4-fold year-on-year:

As a summary, the Japanese market for mobile gaming in 2012 reached US$5.1 billion overall, according to the MCF: US$2.4 billion on feature phones, and US$2.7 billion on smartphones.(source:serkantoto

2)Google Play sees 67% increase in revenue in first half of 2013

Brandy Shaul

Google’s market for Android applications, the Google Play store, saw huge increases in revenue in the first half of 2013, according to the latest report from app analytics company Distimo. The report saw Google Play’s revenue increase by 67 percent in the past six months, while Apple’s App Store revenue grew by just 15 percent.

Even with this large gain, Apple still pulled in double the overall revenue when compared to Google Play. In a previous report, Google Play claimed 25 percent of the combined revenue, but now accounts for 33 percent of the combined revenue across both platforms.

Google Play’s gain was due mostly to large growth in Japan and South Korea. For instance, while the US spent the most money on apps across both platforms in July 2013, Android revenue was largest in those two areas.

This growth is in keeping with Android device sales, which accounted for 52% of smartphone sales during the period of March to May 2013, according to a recent report from Kantar Worldpanel.

Distimo went on to analyze the top free, paid and grossing apps across the Google Play store and associated Amazon Appstore. Facebook and Despicable Me: Minion Rush led the top free app charts on Google Play and Amazon, respectively, while the SwiftKey Keyboard and Minecraft Pocket Edition apps were the leaders in paid applications. Candy Crush Saga was the top grossing app across both iOS and Android during the month of July.(source:insidemobileapps

3)King reveals closure of five Facebook apps, including Hoop de Loop and Bubble ‘Sagas’

Brandy Shaul

Candy Crush Saga developer King (formerly King.com) has quietly revealed the closure of some of its older, less successful Facebook games. The move will see Bubble Saga, Hoop de Loop Saga, Miner Speed and Puzzle Saga all close on September 10, but the company’s most popular ‘Saga’ games won’t be affected. This closure also affects King’s test project King Gold Games, a Facebook hub for events and new game discovery.

Both Bubble Saga and Hoop de Loop Saga still have over 1 million monthly active players, according to our app tracking service AppData, but they have experienced steady declines in their player bases over the past month. Bubble Saga, for instance, lost 1.5 million monthly active players since July 15. The other games currently have less than 100,000 monthly active players each.

According to King, the decision comes as a way for the company to reallocate resources to current games in development, and its most popular active games, including Pet Rescue Saga (our review) and Papa Pear Saga (our review).

Overall, the move seems like a positive one for King, as the affected games were already on the decline, and having fewer games in its portfolio frees up more resources for new and hopefully, more successful ideas. Specifics on those upcoming games are still being held under wraps, but players of King’s closing games are encouraged to play the many games that will remain open. This includes Candy Crush Saga, which remains the No. 1 Facebook game with over 44 million monthly active players.(source:insidesocialgames

4)Apple’s new iPhone expected on 10th September

by Phil Tottman

The iOS7 powered device arrives just in time as market share dips.

Apple are expected to be holding a special event on 10th September to unveil its new device to the world.

As was the norm with the launch of a new iPhone, that all older versions would see a decrease in price to make way for the new leader. However this time round – in answer to the growing list of lower-cost Android devices – Apple has been repeatedly rumoured to be launching a new cheaper version of the iPhone alongside an update for the current iPhone 5.

This arrival has come at a good time for Apple, as they see their market share dip. Hopefully for them, the new device and anything else surrounding it will re-boost the companies finances as a whole.

The new iOS7 – which Apple said was the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone – has been in testing since it was announced at the World Wide Developers Conference in June.

It includes a complete redesign of the iOS that we all know, with a brand new look, improved notifications, better photo-organising abilities and more capabilities for developers. The update will be available for older models, as well as the most recent versions of iPads and iPod devices.

Alongside the new releases, updates and reboots has been even more rumours surrounding the release of an Apple television and a smart watch, however any launch date rumours are currently staying just that.(source:mobile-ent

5)Unity localization plugin can help your game speak a new language

By Kris Ligman

Translation service Transfluent is partnering with Unity to incorporate out-of-the-box localization services for developers.

The new plugin, which will launch August 20th, will allow developers to take advantage of cloud-based translation services to localize as they make a game. Transfluent sees it as a means by which to incorporate localization QA testing from the development stage, meaning games can launch simultaneously in multiple markets — a boon to devs with an eye toward distributing their games worldwide within a small window.

Obviously, machinic translation has its drawbacks, but Transfluent’s social media outfit has some proven successes and boasts “a team of 15,000+ professional live translators.” Even if the cloud-based plugin for Unity is more automated, using it together with localization QA could dramatically cut down on localization time in the long run.(source:gamasutra
