1)Office Jerk tops 7 million downloads on iOS as Fluik release makes leap to Android

by Keith Andrew

Despite having only rolled out at the end of April, this is already the third time Office Jerk has sailed through a download milestone on the pages of PocketGamer.biz.

This time, Fluik Entertainment has announced its free release has surpassed downloads of 7 million on iOS, up 1 million from the 6 million figure it hit 23 days ago.

Jerking onto Android

That means Office Jerk is currently being downloaded at a rate of around 43,500 copies a day.

The milestone figure corresponds with the game’s debut on Android, though Fluik has decided to mix things up a touch for the title’s release on Google’s OS.

As well as a free version, a 99c edition of Office Jerk has also launched on Android Market, as opposed to the one-stop-shop free-only model adopted on iOS.

Expect regular updates on the game’s performance on its new home in the months to come, if the App Store version is anything to go by. (source:pocketgamer)

2)Gameloft’s Mark Hickey departs to take up business development role at Kiip

by Keith Andrew

After almost ten years at mobile publishing giant Gameloft, former business development manager Mark Hickey has left the company to take up a similar role at Kiip.

Hickey has now been installed as senior director of business development at the firm, which specialises in rewards systems for games on Android and iOS.

Risk and reward

The move has so far only been detailed via Hickey’s LinkedIn account, but he leaves Gameloft after having joined the firm as key accounts manager in 2002.

Hickey then moved on to become senior business development manager in 2007, taking charge of Gameloft’s iOS business and relationship with platform holder Apple.

Kiip will now look to benefit from Hickey’s experience, having recently detailed the ins and outs of its rewards system.

Though by no means alone in the incentivisation field, Kiip looks to hand out prizes from commercial partners to players when they complete a certain level, challenge, or points goal in game.

It’s a way to encourage continued play beyond the traditional achievements system, gifting rewards that correlate with players’ interests and match the level of difficulty associated with the goal at hand.

Kiip closed a $4 million strong Series A funding round back in April. (source:pocketgamer)

3)InMobi Analytics drives down cost per conversion by 74% in US

by Keith Andrew

Every mobile ad network would likely claim it could offer advertisers more for their money.

Indian-based ad specialist InMobi, however, has served up the stats it believes proves such a claim, with clients utilising its analytics product seeing a 74 percent drop in cost per conversion on the network.

InMobi reports the new low rate is currently being enjoyed by ‘dozens’ of clients across the US, thanks to their ability to sample InMobi Analytics’ real-time conversion optimisation technology.

Larger slice of the American pie

“Measurement has always been the missing piece of the puzzle in the mobile advertising market,” said VP and MD of InMobi North America, Anne Frisbie.

“Our goal is to help grow the category while delivering ROI positive results for our clients.

“We are pleased to see that InMobi Analytics is helping our customers achieve their marketing goals, and we expect over 100 million Americans every month will enjoy a better mobile ad experience by the end of 2011 as a result.”(source:pocketgamer)

4)Singapore developer inks deal to use MOL credits for mobile game items

By Alfred Siew

Singapore mobile developer Stream Media has tied up with MOL AccessPortal to enable users to buy in-game items without having to use a credit card.

MOL, which acquired Friendster in 2009, is the regional payment partner for Zynga Game Cards and Facebook Credits. It handles more than 60 million transactions worth over US$300 million from users annually, through its MOLPoints credits which can be bought at stores and used to buy virtual items.

Singapore’s Stream Media, meanwhile has developed an in-game billing system called MoVend, which enables people to buy games directly on their Android phones. With the tie-up, MOLPoints users will now be able to purchase in-game items from MoVend-enabled games on their Android phones.(source:techgoondu)

5)Online Gaming ‘Reduces Likelihood Of 9th Console Generation’

by Mike Rose

The rise of digital download content and online and mobile gaming reduces the likelihood of a ninth generation console cycle, according to a Digi-Capital investment review.

Digi-Capital’s Global Video Games Investment Review 2011 notes that game delivery services such as OnLive create “potentially significant long term issues” for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and GameStop.

The analysis explains that the iPad and other such tablets may also impact the console market, but that the effects will take “take much longer to occur than [first] anticipated.”

The eighth generation console cycle, estimated to run between 2014-2016, will also be affected, according to the report, as casual, social and online gaming, including MMOs and mobile games, will constrain the growth of console gaming.

The report also notes, “Many major console publishers are struggling to adapt to online/mobile, and are not driving online/mobile games investment.”

Digi-Capital estimates that online and mobile games “should grow total video games market size to $87 billion”, while taking around 50 percent of the revenue share at $44 billion. In comparison, the console sector will see its share flat to down.

The report also discusses the current console generation, noting that the Nintendo Wii is currently dominating with 46 percent of overall console unit sales, following by Xbox 360′s 28 percent and PlayStation 3′s 26 percent.

2010 sales of Xbox 360 were 42 percent higher than in 2009, with sales driven by eight million Kinects sold in its first 60 days. (source:gamasutra)

6)Nielsen: U.S. smartphone data usage nearly doubles

Devindra Hardawar

Mobile data usage in the U.S. has jumped by 89 percent over the last year, according to research group Nielsen.

But consumers are also paying about the same as they did a year ago for mobile data service, Nielsen points out, which means that the average cost per megabyte of data has dropped by around half from 14 cents per megabyte to just 8 cents.

The figures aren’t exactly surprising, but it’s certainly interesting to consider just how far we’ve come in mobile data over the past year. Smartphone owners account for 37 percent of all mobile subscribers in the U.S., a number that could surpass 50 percent by next year. And you can bet that current smartphone owners will continue to consume more data, especially with the rise of 4G networks this year.

Nielsen’s monthly analysis of 65,000 mobile lines shows that smartphone usage has grown from an average of 230 megabytes last year to 435 MB this past quarter. Heavy smartphone users, naturally, are driving the growth. Data usage for the top 10 percent of smartphone owners jumped by 109 percent, while the top 1 percent rose a massive 144 percent (from 1.8GB last year to 4.6GB).

Platform-wise, Nielsen notes that Android users typically consume more data (582MBs per month on average) compared to iPhone users (492MBs). Windows Phone 7 users have also doubled their mobile data usage in the last two quarters.(source:venturebeat)

7)Nigeria enjoys 31% mobile browsing penetration, US 6%Tweet3

By Wen Muenyi

The mobile phone world seems to revolve around the North America, Korean, and UK mobile phone market, but there’s more to the mobile scene than what we usually talk about. Quirksmode.org put together a chart of how other countries are using their phones to browse the web. The countries covered include Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, and Poland. They also included stats for South Korea, the UK, and the US for contrast.

The chart gives us a lot of information on every country and how they like to browse the web on their free time. Nigeria has the most market share for mobile phone browsing, with over 31% of all internet content being accessed from mobile. Luckily this report goes into more details than just that. It also shows Opera Mini as being the browser of choice for Nigerians, and that’s most likely due to the browser’s great server-side compression. That makes accessing the web from your phone much cheaper because the browser cuts the amount of data you use to view the same content you’d see on your computer.

India follows behind Nigeria with 20% of the internet being seen on small screen portable devices. Like Nigeria, they use Opera Mini as their go-to browser for viewing the web on their portable phones. Indonesia continues the Opera trend as being the most used browser, and also come in 3rd place for traffic with 11% penetration. Apple finally shows its strength in the UK and UK market by taking the browser lead in both countries, but that’s not a big surprise; these countries only browse the web from their phones/tablets 5% of the time.

The information on this chart is quite interesting. All of the countries covered included data on browser usage, most popular browser, and certain countries even come with extra remarks by the chart’s creator. It’s always good to know how the rest of the world is interacting with the web, especially compared with how we use it.(source:intomobile)

8)Rip Off, From Vietnam’s Colorbox, Brings Challenge, Color & Chaos to iPhone

By Christopher

Here’s a little gem that slid under the radar. Rip Off is an iPhone title from Vietnamese developer Colorbox — whose previous titles include profiled app A.I.R. Defense — that, at first glance, looks like another Fruit Ninja clone in which players slice objects with their fingers. The game became part of OpenFeint’s Free Game of the Day, and promptly shot up to #2 on the top free iPhone apps list. Looks are definitely deceiving though as it certainly isn’t another Fruit Ninja game.

It’s easy to get the gist of the game. In the center of the screen are three bird eggs, and all enemies that appear will move towards them. If they reach the eggs, they will pick them up and carry them off screen. If all three eggs are lost, then the game is over.

In order to prevent this, players swipe their finger across the screen to throw our hero bird right into the would-be thieves. Perhaps he is related to some other form of irritable fowl on the iOS?(source:insidemobileapps
