REPORT: Facebook Blows Away Twitter

Facebook will have an average of 132.5 million monthly users in the U.S., more than half the number of Internet surfers in the country. And that’s almost five times what Twitter will have on a monthly basis in 2011.

This data comes from eMarketer, which calculates that 2011 will see a 13.4 percent rise in monthly users of Facebook compared to last year. And almost nine out of every 10 social networkers will be Facebookers.

Within two years or so, almost half of the overall U.S. population will have Facebook accounts, representing 62 percent of all web users in the country. Yes, the rate of growth in the U.S. will slow down around this time, as the market approaches saturation, but possibly foreign markets will pick up the slack.

This data seems to contradict other statistics we’ve seen regarding Twitter, but the difference has to do with the types of measurements — volume of postings, total number of accounts, number of active users, location of markets, and so on.
