1)GungHo grossing estimated $2M daily from a single mobile game

By Mike Rose

GungHo Online Entertainment, the Japanese publisher that recently acquired Shadows of the Damned developer Grasshopper Manufacture, is estimated to be grossing 6 billion yen ($65 million) a month from a single mobile game.

According to details taken from the publisher’s latest financial report, and as translated by industry consultant Serkan Toto, Puzzle & Dragons is believed to be making an average of $2 million on a daily basis.

The match-three puzzler was released in Japan last February, and has over 8 million registered players. An English version was released in the U.S. and Europe in November.

Notably, the success of the title has seen revenues and profits at GungHo surge — for fiscal 2012, the company saw sales grow by 168.8 percent, and operating profits grow by 690.1 percent.

And GungHo was keen to stress that the significant boost in sales is still ongoing. In a separate document, the publisher listed financial details for January of this year, noting that sales hit 8.5 billion yen ($91.6 million), up 1022.4 percent year-over-year.

This compares to the $1 million a day that Clash of Clans studio Supercell was reported to be making from two mobile games.(source:gamasutra

2)Developer promotes piracy of game, experiences best sales yetPCMac

By Dant Rambo

Who says piracy has to be a bad thing? Sean Hogan, co-designer of retro RPG Anodyne, has revealed in a blog post that promoting the game on The Pirate Bay’s homepage yielded its best sales numbers yet.

Before going into details about the campaign’s success, Hogan discussed how much everything cost on his end. “First, it cost $7 to do the promo, all $7 of which were for paying our hosting provider for bandwidth, Nearlyfreespeech.net. There were no other costs,” he said.

That $7 went a long way for the game’s creators: in just three days, the game raked in $12,000 and received an influx of upvotes on its Greenlight page. The effects of the promotion cropped up in other places as well, with the developers receiving hundreds of new Twitter followers and Facebook likes, and the view count for the game’s trailer passing 100,000.

Hogan is sharing a pretty in-depth breakdown of the entire ordeal on his blog, including details about where people chose to purchase the game, and how much they paid. Most sales took place through the Humble Store (4,511) to be exact, with $1.74 being the average going price for just the game. The average price for those who purchased the game and the soundtrack, on the other hand, was $2.76.

This only scratches the surface of Hogan’s analysis, and it’s well worth your time to mosey on over to his site and read up on the promotion.

Some of you might recall McPixel developer Sos Sosowski taking a similar route with his game and also experiencing success. It may not be the best path for every title on the market, but it seems like piracy might have a lot to offer to prospective developers.

3)Mother and son launch Facebook game SqueeDogs – Game developer Pirate Epstein, at the urging of his mother Cerise Jacobs, has launched a 3D Facebook pet sim called SqueeDogs using $10,000 in Kickstarter funds. As Wicked Local’s Brookline blog reports, the project got off the ground because Jacobs wanted a game that starred her rescue dog, Mencius.(source:insidesocialgames

4)Zynga Valentine’s Day poll reveals that With Friends players flirt with chat – An annual Zynga survey of players reveals that people sometimes flirt in social/mobile games. Highlights from the survey include: 30 percent of players flirt with their opponent through the chat feature; 23 percent try to play higher-scoring words against someone to whom they are attracted; 24 percent are more competitive when playing against somebody they have romantic feelings for; 53 percent report being more attracted to players with a good vocabulary; and 26 percent of married players play with their spouse.(source:insidesocialgames

5)Teen creates social network for cancer patients that love video games – Polygon reports that cancer survivor Steven Gonzalez is creating a social network for teens with cancer that want to play video games together. The not-for-profit network, Survivor Games, will function like a virtual arcade where players can chat, game together or spectate other games.(source:insidesocialgames

6)Breaking: EA and Zynga reach settlement in lawsuit surrounding The Ville

Mike Thompson

Inside Social Games has learned that Zynga and Electronic Arts have reached a settlement and are moving to dismiss the lawsuit that was filed last summer surrounding The Ville. The decision is now in the court’s hands.

At the moment, details are scarce about the settlement.

Zynga released the following statement this morning: “EA and Zynga have resolved their respective claims and have reached a settlement of their litigation in the Northern District of California.”

The lawsuit was originally filed against Zynga by EA in August 2012. Earlier that summer, Zynga launched its lifestyle sim game, The Ville, and garnered criticism from across the internet over the game’s similarities to EA’s own The Sims Social. At the time, EA claimed it was “standing up for the industry” with its lawsuit. We had a different take on the lawsuit.

Shortly afterward, Zynga countersued EA. The counter-suit alleged EA violated anti-trust laws and claimed the company had copied the visual style of CityVille with SimCity Social and actively tried to prevent Zynga from hiring employees away from EA. EA, for its part, called Zynga’s filing “a subterfuge aimed at diverting attention from Zynga’s persistent plagiarism of other artists and studios.”

Neither The Ville nor SimCity Social really paid off for their developers. Although The Ville saw high traffic levels when it launched, the numbers dropped dramatically in the months following its launch.

The game was no longer appearing on either of our lists of Top 25 Facebook games by December (though it dropped off the Top 25 Facebook games by DAU in October). SimCity Social, meanwhile, only appeared on the Top 25 Facebook games list in August before it also started to lose users, likely due to a lack of content after completing the main chapter-spanning quest surrounding a UFO crash.

The lawsuit has held the attention of both the press and game developers, primarily because it surrounded two of the biggest players in the games industry. Prior to this, there had been a similar lawsuit between SpryFox and 6waves (formerly 6waves Lolapps), where SpryFox accused 6waves of cloning its popular social game Triple Town with its own game, Yeti Town. That suit was settled in October after a judge denied 6waves’ request to dismiss the case, with SpryFox receiving ownership of the Yeti Town IP. Both of these cases would have set precedent when it came to video game law and what it could mean when a developer cloned (or “fast followed”) titles from other companies.(source:insidesocialgames

7)Brazil: Emerging onto the Social Gaming Scene

By Camilla Noon

As one of the emerging markets known for its growth in social gaming over the past year, it only seems fair to take a deeper look into the current state of social games in Brazil.  A look at the top Brazilian game and app developers through analytics service, metricsmonk, throws up a fairly small market whilst a look at the top games and apps played in Brazil shows an overall growing trend for the past year.

The general trend for Brazil’s social game and app market on Facebook is an upward one.  Up until October 2011 social network Orkut had its biggest presence in the country, but last year Brazil was named as the country with the second biggest number of Facebook users after the United States.  It is not a secret that Brazil continues to grow in this respect.

What is Brazil contributing?

The top Brazilian game developer is Vostu with just under 370,000 daily active users (DAU) and 3.6M monthly active users (MAU).  Vostu’s top game, Candy Dash tops the chart with user figures totaling 90,000 DAU and 980.000 MAU. As for top app developers, the results show slim pickings with top rated developer by daily active users as Cartas de Tarô throwing one app with the same name into the arena, with just over 70,000 DAU and 118,000 MAU.  The top Brazilian developers fail to reach a wider audience, with the majority of game players and app users originating in Brazil.

What are Brazilians playing?

Arguably, this is a more pertinent question and one that coaxes a response that includes Brazil’s response to the global market of developers, apps and games.  What are the most popular games and apps in Brazil right now?

A look at the analytics shows that, as one has come to expect, Zynga takes 3 of the top 10 spots of the most popular social games in Brazil, ranked according to daily active user numbers.  In the monthly active users however, Zynga eats into a larger portion of the top ten with 5 top spots.  However, current overall top social game, King.com’s Candy Crush Saga, storms ahead in first place with over 450,000 daily active users and 2M monthly active users.

Brazilian birthday app “Posso adicionar teu aniversário” is the most popular Facebook application in Brazil with nearly 8M MAU.  In fact similar birthday apps creep into the top ten of many countries in different languages and from different developers. Microsoft takes the crown of the most used app in Brazil in terms of daily active users, figures totaling just over 1.2M but falls to second place in monthly active users, with 4.7M MAU.(source:socialgamesobserver
