1)Zynga UK general manager Matthew Wiggins leaves social giant

by James Nouch

Matthew Wiggins, the general manager for Zynga UK, has announced he has left the company.

Wiggins is the latest in a long line of high-ranking Zynga employees to abandon ship since the company entered its current rocky patch.

Wiggins formerly served as CEO of Wonderland Software, the UK-based developer of the iOS game GodFinger. Zynga acquired that studio in April 2011, and immediately appointed Wiggins as general manager for the newly-formed Zynga UK.

The others

Other recent high-profile exits from Zynga include COO John Schappert, who left in August, closely followed by chief creative officer Mike Verdu.

Then, September saw the departure of chief marketing and revenue officer Jeff Karp, and chief security officer Nils Puhlmann, among others.

When Zynga went public in December 2011, it began trading on NASDAQ at a share price of $10. By March 2012, Zynga shares had climbed to a price of more than $14.60 each.

Since then, however, Zynga’s share value has been consistently falling. Today, ZNGA shares are trading at less than $2.50 each.

All the best

Writing on his new personal website – which he describes as a venue for the “thoughts and contributions that I’ve been unable to express up until now” – Wiggins didn’t go into detail about his reasons for leaving, but did express his best wishes for “the good and talented people who I leave behind.”

“For me, the Wonderland Software/Zynga UK adventure has come to an end. Earlier this month I awoke to the exciting realisation that, after almost three and a half years, I had left that chapter behind and could look ahead to the future. It’s been quite a ride.

“Just as when we started Wonderland back in June 2009, I’m still tremendously excited by the revolution in computing that is happening right now. The opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurism are even better now than they were then, ” Wiggins explained.

“And having learned so much from the journey I’ve just been on, I can’t wait to use that knowledge to do new things in the future – and of course learn a whole load more.”(source:pocketgamer

2)Minecraft: Pi Edition aims to encourage young people to code

By Mike Rose

The Mojang team is set to release a special version of its behemoth hit indie title Minecraft for the Raspberry Pi computer, in a bid to encourage more young people to get into coding.

The Raspberry Pi launched earlier this year, and is a credit card-sized, single-board computer designed to teach programming to students in the UK. The team behind it saw huge demand back when it was released.

Minecraft: Pi Edition will be completely free to download, and will feature a version of the Pocket Edition with support for multiple programming languages.

“You can start by building structures in the traditional Minecraft way,” explained Mojang’s Owen Hill, “but once you’ve got to grips with the in-game features, there’s opportunity to break open the code and use programming language to manipulate things in the game world. You’ll be learning new skills through Minecraft.”

The Pi Edition is due for release sometime soon, Hill added, and he urged interested individuals to grab one of the $25/$35 Pi devices.

Raspberry Pi trustee David Braben told Gamasutra earlier this year, “My real ambition is that I want us to be able to give them away for free to every child in the [UK] in one year group, and then keep doing it each year, so that gradually everyone has one.” (source:gamasutra

3)Kabam signs exclusive distribution deal in fast-growing Turkey market

Dean Takahashi

Game publisher Kabam said today it will enter the fast-growing Turkish mobile market through a distribution deal with Mynet.

Mynet, a web portal and gaming community in Turkey, will distribute Kabam’s free-to-play mobile game Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North on both Apple iOS and Android. Mynet, which has about 20 million unique visitors per month, will be the exclusive distributor.

San Francisco-based Kabam created a community of fans around its hardcore games on Facebook, but it pivoted into mobile games in the past year. Kabam grew to more than $100 million in revenues in 2011, and it says more than 70 percent of its revenues are now coming from non-Facebook platforms. The move to Turkey could help further diversify the company’s fan base and help it grow its brand in international markets.

“Turkey is a gateway country in a region exploding with core gamers playing on mobile devices,” said Kabam chief operating officer Chris Carvalho. “Partnering with Turkey’s market leader in online social games is a natural for Kabam. This deal drives great value to both parties; Mynet wins by exclusively distributing one of the most popular strategy games of all time to its audience, and Kabam wins by getting Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North in front of millions of new players in a rapidly growing region. ”

“Mynet has grown to be Turkey’s largest games community by providing our members the best of the world’s games,” said Mynet general manager Sabire Ercan. “Kabam’s Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North continues to be one of the highest grossing apps on mobile devices in 47 countries since April.  We look forward to adding Turkey to this list.”

4)KakaoTalk Japan Opens Social Gaming Platform With 3 Titles

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Mega-popular Korean chat app KakaoTalk (66 million users worldwide) has opened its gaming platform inside the Japanese version, starting with 3 titles.

The roll-out in Japan is part of a “global” release maker Kakao announced a few days ago. Games available on KakaoTalk in its native Korea have generally been very successful (82 million Kakao-powered game downloads since July is a pretty solid number).

Japanese KakaoTalk users get the same titles as everybody else: the ridiculously popular puzzle game Anipang (by SundayToz), Tap Tap Blitz (by AndromedaGames), and Puzzle Zoo Zoo (by Nexon). All the titles are essentially one-player games but make use of the KakaoTalk social graph.

The situation in Japan is special, however: over here, KakaoTalk has a much stronger competitor than in Korea, namely NHN Japan’s LINE, which is pretty successful with its own game business so far.

Japan is also the only company in which Kakao has teamed up with a bigger company, Yahoo Japan, to reach a wide user base: in a recent interview with news site Game Watch, Kakao Japan CEO Park said he sees exactly this partnership as the key to success on the Japanese market.

There is a third Japan-specific factor for KakaoTalk: there is no GREE or Mobage of Korea, a homegrown social gaming network that ever reached a critical size. The Kakao Games platform in Japan will not only compete with LINE Game, it will have to do the same with GREE, Mobage, and the handful of other domestic mobile gaming platforms.

And not to forget, local partner Yahoo Japan has made game distribution deals with DeNA and GREE just a few days ago.(source:serkantoto

5)CityVille 2′s continuing to dominate fastest-growing Facebook games by MAU

Mike Thompson

Zynga’s CityVille 2 is continuing its winning run atop our list of fastest-growing Facebook games by monthly active users. The game took the No. 1 spot this week with 9.6 million MAU, a 72 percent gain.

King.com’s Pet Rescue Saga came in at No. 2, up 2.3 million MAU for a 64 percent increase. Social Point’s Dragon City snagged the No. 3 position with 600,000 MAU, a 4 percent gain. Ruby Blast Adventures is continuing its recent resurgence, taking the No. 4 spot with 300,000 MAU for a 2 percent boost. Plarium’s Stormfall: Age of War is the final of the top five games on this week’s list, up by 300,000 MAU for a 38 percent gain.(source:insidesocialgames
