1)Google’s Nexus 7 becomes best selling Android tablet in UK

by James Nouch

Google’s Nexus 7 has become one of the fastest selling tablets in UK history according to stats released by Britain’s largest independent mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse.

The chain claims Google’s tablet is the best selling Android tablet it has stocked to date, with Nexus 7 having hit said milestone in less than three months after lauching on 27 July.

Setting the pace

“Looking at the sales of the Google Nexus tablet, it’s clear that there is a massive demand amongst our customer base for smaller tablets,” explained the company’s chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton.

“We’re seeing a real shift in what customers are using their tablets for, with more and more watching content on the go.
“It’s now common to see people using their tablets during the morning commute or catching up on the day’s news in a local coffee shop, and smaller devices make it easier to handle.”

Apple of my eye

Right now, of course, the industry is waiting to see whether Apple will launch its own smaller-form tablet.

Many commentators believe that the Cupertino company will finally unveil the much-rumoured ‘iPad Mini’ next week, entering a market that is currently dominated by Google and Amazon.

That possibility is hinted at in the Carphone Warehouse’s announcement, although Stapleton is careful not to name names.

“It’s impressive that this product is our biggest selling Android tablet, and it will be really interesting to see if other manufacturers will follow suit with smaller tablets over the coming months to spice up the Christmas period.” (source:pocketgamer

2)Google rolls out improved developer console, adds user ratings analytics, automatic translations

Kathleen De Vere

Google has rolled out a revamped version of the Google Play developer console.

Originally teased at the I/O developer conference earlier this year, the new version of the Google Play developer console promises to be easier to use and navigate, particularly for developers with multiple apps. It also now allows developers to automatically translate and publish their Google Play app listings (but not the apps themselves) into 49 languages.

In addition, Google has beefed up the analytics side of the developer console, adding new statistics that allow developers to track user ratings by country, language, version and even device.

Developers who wish to try the new version can do so by logging into their standard developer console and selecting the “try the new version” link in the page header. At this time multiple APK support, APK Expansion Files and announcements are not supported in the new developer console, but are still accessible through the old version.

As is typical for Google, both versions of the developer console will be available for the foreseeable future, as Google solicits Feedback on the new console and continues to roll out improvements.(source:insidemobileapps

3)’Mobile will push console gaming into a niche’

by Mike Shaw

“The gaming industry is finally becoming mass-market.”

EA founder says console market will become ‘more like a hobby market’ due to smartphone and tablet gaming.

Trip Hawkins founded Electronic Arts (EA) back in 1982, worked closely with Steve Jobs in the early days of Apple and founded Digital Chocolate, and although he doesn’t have the same power today as he once did, his words still carry a lot of weight.

In an interview with IGN, he said that he sees console gaming becoming a hobby:

“The console market is always going to be with us, because there’s always going to be a hardcore segment, a segment that likes innovation. But it’s going to become a smaller market, and it’s going to be more like a hobby market. You look at airplanes. Most of us just want to be a passenger, but there’s a hobby market for people who are really into aviation and want to take flying lessons and maybe someday have their own airplane. I think that’s what’s happening to the console market.

“But there are billions of people now playing games. The gaming industry is finally becoming mass-market. It’s across two billion PCs and four billion mobile phones, and within a few years a billion tablets.”

Hawkins continued: “Games are going everywhere. Plenty of people are playing for social reasons and playing when it’s convenient. It’s a trend towards mobile- and browser- and cloud-basedgames. You contrast that with what happens when you have to either purchase or download a specific app that runs native on a specific device and you only ever play it when you have that platform in front of you.

“In the old days I’d go down to the basement to play Grand Theft Auto. But the Facebook gamer is able to play at work, at home, in a hotel on a PC. They can get access to a browser just about anywhere. People are thinking about convenience first.”(source:mobile-ent

4)US consumer data use climbs 104 per cent year on-year

by Zen Terrelonge

US consumer data use climbs 104 per cent year on-year

1.1 trillion MB gobbled between July 2011 to June 2012.

New results from CTIA’s semi-anual survey shows that smarphones accounted for 131m (41 per cent) of 322m wireless subscriber connections, with tablets rising to 22m (17 per cent).

This has contributed to a huge 104 per cent spike of year-on-year data consumption, with Americans using more than 1.1 trillion MB of data between July 2011 and June 2012.

The average monthly bill for voice, data, and text usage cost consumers $47.16, a dip of $0.07 despite the hunger for data.

Steve Largent, President and CEO of CTIA, said: “Americans are using more voice, data and text than ever before, but are paying less for their wireless usage than even a year ago.

“Thanks to the fiercely competitive wireless industry, consumers have a variety of choices from which provider to contract or prepaid plans to devices.”(source:mobile-ent

5)Mobile ad spending doubled in early 2012

by Mike Sha

The report was conducted by the Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers

Increased by 95 per cent to $1.2bn during the first six months of 2012, compared to £636m in the first half of 2011.

Internet advertising revenues climbed to an all-time high during the first half of 2012, spurred on by astonishing growth in mobile ad spending.

A report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers showed that mobile advertising contributed seven per cent of total internet ad revenues in that period, up from four per cent in early 2011.

Internet ad revenues reached $17 billion during the first half of 2012, compared to $14.9 billion in the year-ago period, with mobile ad spending going from $636m to $1.2bn over the same period.

David Silverman, partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, said: “The tremendous growth of mobile advertising revenue over the past year is an indication of the importance of location to advertisers and mobility to consumers.

“Bringing the power of the Internet to mobile devices has opened up a world of possibilities to both consumers and marketers.”(source:mobile-ent

6)INFOGRAPHIC: Toilet talk – cell phone usage in restrooms

by Mike Shaw

More people than ever are using their mobiles while doing unspeakable things. One in six phone has traces of you-know-what on it.

Every few weeks stats some stats come out about usage of mobile phones in toilets, but far from the figures shaming people into being less disgusting, it seems the opposite is happening: more of us are using our devices while doing unspeakable things.

For example, 30 per cent of Generation Y say they would not lay a cable without their phone, preferring to wait and face crisis than venture into the bathroom alone.

And then there’s this fact: one in four of people always use their phones while on the toilet. Choose wisely next time you need to borrow someone’s device. (source:mobile-ent
