1)Global Card Battle Game Hit Dark Summoner Hits 1 Million Downloads [Social Games]

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Dark Summoner, a mobile social card battle game available in English and Japanese, has racked up 1 million downloads, maker Ateam is reporting.

What’s interesting is that Dark Summoner was released on February 23 this year (in Japan and elsewhere), meaning the title took just about 150 days to hit the milestone.

The number is especially noteworthy when considering that the game was available on iOS only for a long time: in fact, Ateam released the Android version just a few days ago (on July 18, to be exact, in English and Japanese).

As usual with Japan’s “event-crazy” social game developers, Ateam is running a special in-game campaign to commemorate the one millionth download: the campaign makes it easier for users to lay their hands on hard to get monster cards through July 31 (Dark Summoner features over 700 cards currently).

Atem recently said that Dark Summoner, the second biggest made-in-Japan social card game (globally) after Rage Of Bahamut, is pulling in about US$1.3 million per month – without using the Mobage or GREE networks.

The company went IPO in April this year (current market cap: US$130 million).(source:serkantoto

2)Capcom’s Q1 net income up 290% Y-over-Y to $16.6M

Kathleen De Vere

Capcom’s 2012/2013 fiscal year is off to a booming start, with the company reporting net sales of 18.6 billion yen ($238 million), up 55.8 percent year-over-year, and a net income of 1.3 billion yen ($16.6 million), an increase of 290.2 percent year-on-year.

The company highlighted the strength of its digital content division, which saw net sales increase 78.8 percent year-over-year to 13.7 billion yen ($175.3 million) and operating income of rise 175.6 percent year-over-year to 2.4 billion yen ($30.7 million).

Capcom’s mobile and social games contributed heavily to its earnings, with the Mobage title Minna to Monhan Card Master and the GREE title Resident Evil: Outbreak Survive both maintaining steady sales. Four of Capcom’s Japanese mobile social games have now surpassed 4.9 million users.

The company’s Beeline brand also continued to do well, having now passed 65 million downloads, up from the 56 million downloads Capcom reported in Q4 2011. The unit has been extremely successful turning well-known brands into some of the most popular (and profitable) titles on iOS and Android — particularly its flagship title Smurfs Village, which still accounts for most of Beeline’s 65 million downloads. Capcom reports both Smurfs Village and Snoopy’s Street Fair have brought the company steady fees.

Capcom’s mobile content sales hit 2.9 billion yen ($37.1 million) during Q1, an increase of 141.6 percent over Q1 2011’s 1.2 billion yen in sales. Overall, Capcom is predicting mobile content sales to hit 12.0 billion yen ($153.5 million) for its 2012/2013 fiscal year.

The company is forecasting a record high fiscal year target, with net sales of 105 billion yen ($1.34 billion) for the fiscal year, with net income of 9.8 billion yen ($125.4 million).

Capcom finished its previous 2011/2012 fiscal year with 82 billion yen ($1.04 billion) in sales and 6.7 billion yen ($85.7 million) in net income.(source:insidemobileapps

3)You have one more week to buy Rock Band in the iOS App Store

Giancarlo Valdes

Publisher Electronic Arts’ licensing agreement with Rock Band developer Harmonix will cease to exist as of next week. After July 31, the mobile versions of the popular rhythm-based music series, Rock Band and Rock Band Reloaded (not pictured), will no longer be sold in the iTunes App Store.

Warning notices are already in place on both games’ App Store descriptions, where they still retail for $4.99 each, along with a library of $0.99 song packs as in-app purchases. EA also explained details of this delisting on its website, where it urges customers to back up their games to iCloud before July 31 if they want to keep playing or restore previous purchases. If the games aren’t already stored in iCloud or downloaded to a local iOS device, players will be unable to recover their data once the deadline has passed.

Harmonix retains the intellectual property rights for its games (which also includes Dance Central) as part of an agreement with its former parent company, Viacom, who sold off the studio in 2010.(source:venturebeat

4)Apple to buy Twitter?

by Zen Terrelonge

Speculation grows – and could push the mini-blog’s value past $10bn.

The New York Times believes Apple execs are in talks to invest in Twitter – a social network that still loses money, despite more than 150m users.

Twitter was valued as $8.4 billion last year, and the sources reckon funding from Apple could drive the valuation past $10bn.

Observers suggest Apple needs to do more in social, noting that CEO Tim Cook recently said: “Apple doesn’t have to own a social network. But does Apple need to be social? Yes.”

Of course, Apple does own a social network in the form of Ping.

However, the music-focused portal on iTunes has failed to make much of a dent in the domination of Facebook and Twitter.(source:mobile-ent

5)iPhone 5 & iPad mini likely launching Sept. 21

Tom Cheredar

Both the next generation iPhone and a new, smaller version of the iPad are rumored to be announced during an official Apple event September 12, with a retail release to follow on September 21.

The news comes from sources obtained by Apple blog iMore, which has correctly predicted both the iPad 3 launch and iPhone 4S pre-order dates in the past.

The launch date of the next generation iPhone (referred to by most as the iPhone 5) would make sense because of the leaked iPhone 5 parts that were recently assembled and photographed, as VentureBeat reported. If the launch is just over a month away, it seems more likely that parts for the device could be obtained. If the announcement/launch dates are correct, it would mark 11 months since the company announced the iPhone 4S.

As for the new iPad product, many are speculating that Apple will release a 7.85-inch iPad that has essentially the same specs as the third-generation 10-inch iPad. The smaller iPad version would naturally compete with other popular 7-inch tablets, such as the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

IMore’s sources also indicated that a new version of Apple’s iPod Touch could debut during the event but didn’t give any specifications on what would be different about it.(source:venturebeat
