1)Google+ now has over 150M active users, adds Android tablet and iPad compatibility

Mike Thompson

Today during the Google I/O 2012 keynote, Google announced it’s rolling out a tablet-friendly version of Google+, both for Android devices and the iPad.

The revelation was made by Vic Gundotra, Google’s SVP of Engineering. This new tablet-friendly version of G+ will feature Google Hangout compatibility, and will redesign the way  posts from friends in users’ circles are displayed. During the keynote, it was demonstrated how posts by people that are gaining popularity will be larger than other posts. Gundotra also said — but didn’t show — there will be other re-designed features like a new ribbon bar and profile designs. Android tablet compatibility is coming out today, while the iPad version will arrive “very soon.”

Gundotra also revealed the following milestones. Google+ now has over 150 million monthly active users, with over 50 percent of them signing in every day, with the average user session being over 60 minutes across Google. Finally, Gundtora said there are now more people using G+ from mobile platforms than from desktop computers.(source:insidesocialgames

2)Pamela Anderson takes on Zynga with BamPoker game

Dean Takahashi

Zynga has the biggest online poker game in the world, but actress Pamela Anderson has the biggest…well,  a bigger name. So she is entering the Facebook social gaming market with a new title called BamPoker.

The celebrity tie-in could help the new poker game stand out among many competitors. It’s another sign that social casino games, which are now played by 13 percent of all Facebook gamers, rank as one of the hottest and most crowded categories in gaming today.

BamPoker combines speedy Facebook poker gameplay, an online community, and the appeal of actress and supermodel Anderson. Zynga, on the other hand, has a five-year head start and it has 33.7 million monthly active players on Facebook.

BamPoker users can play Texas Hold ‘Em poker with former Baywatch star Anderson herself and talk with her via a fan page. The game pits real people against one another in both casual and tournament-style play. It’s a free-to-play game where you purchase virtual chips for real money if you want to. The goal is to obtain a VIP badge so you can play with the elite at exclusive tables.

BamPoker is the creation of Canadian entrepreneurs Elton Pereira and Jeremy Nichele.

“In a poker game, anything can happen,” Pereira says. “Even a flop can make you a winner.” Hence BamPoker’s motto: “That’s the Beauty of the Game!”

“When I first met Elton and Jeremy, I knew they were on to something special,” Andrerson says. “They weren’t interested in creating just another game — they wanted to take the social elements of online poker in a bold new direction. There is nothing like BamPoker out there today, and I am excited to be a part of such an innovative platform.”(source:venturebeat

3)IAC’s Rebel Entertainment comes out swinging with Dungeon Rampage social game

Dean Takahashi

Rebel Entertainment is coming out of stealth today as a new game publisher with a popular browser-based dungeon-crawling game on Facebook.

Burbank, Calif.-based Rebel, a division of Internet giant IAC, has been testing Dungeon Rampage for months, and it has garnered more than 500,000 users during that time. It’s a cartoon-like fantasy dungeon-crawling game, sort of like Blizzard’s Diablo III title but a lot less serious, Rebel general manager Mike Goslin told GamesBeat.

The title is unique as a fast-action, synchronous game in which players fight alongside each other in real-time, Goslin said. Most Facebook titles are slower games in which players take their turns one at a time. And while Dungeon Rampage is light-hearted and full of humor, it’s going after more serious gamers than your typical Facebook FarmVille game.

Goslin said he knows that moving into Facebook will bring the company into competition with established leaders such as Zynga in casual games and Kixeye in serious hardcore games. But he said that the company’s first title delivers a fast-action fighting game that you wouldn’t otherwise find on Facebook.

“Our game play is a lot more like an arcade title,” Goslin said. “It’s easy to play, but hard to master.”

Rebel is funded completely by IAC. Previously, IAC launched InstantAction, a web game publisher that it shut down a while ago. Dungeon Rampage will officially launch later this year on multiple platforms. Goslin said the company will add more features, heroes, maps, and weapons.

“We are going out as fast as we can to get up and running,” Goslin said.

Rebel was founded in 2011. The team comes from companies such as Atari, Disney, Insomniac, EA, and Zynga. It’s working on a number of different games. With Dungeon Rampage, players choose from six different warriors, like a hammer-wielding Berserker, a Battle Chef, and a katana-slashing Ghost Samurai. As the player, you explore dungeons, avoid traps, and kill monsters. The Flash-based browser game uses a two-dimensional, isometric view of the action.(source:venturebeat

4)Valve releases free tool for making in-game movies with Source

by Eric Caoili

Half-Life developer Valve Software has launched a closed beta for Source Filmmaker, a free tool allowing users to record and create movies inside its Source game engine.

It’s the same tool Valve has used to create promotional movies for its games. Source Filmmaker enables users to capture and edit animation using assets in a Source game. It’s meant to condense various animation studio tools into a single suite, and even offers a facial animation system with lip-syncing.

This news follows a couple of weeks after director Shane Acker (of the film “9″) and Brown Bag Films announced that they are using tools and technologies based on the Source game engine for their upcoming animated film Deep. They also intend to release playable content to complement its movie with the tools.

Information on signing up for Source Filmmaker’s free beta, as well as a video demonstrating the tool, is available here. Valve will release the tool through Steam later this year.(source:gamasutra
