1)Rovio plans to catapult Angry Birds Land to China

by Zen Terrelonge

Part of the developer’s strategy for world domination.

The first Angry Birds Land theme park opened in Rovio’s native Finland at the start of the month, and now China Daily reports the firm will also open parks in China – the world’s largest smartphone market.

Rovio marketing chief Peter Vesterbacka says the Angry Birds activity parks will be different to traditional theme parks, working as a way to engage users and drive an interest in the brand.

He, said: “The activity parks are not like theme parks where people stand for two hours and ride for ten minutes. We want our fans to be part of the game.

“It is very important to understand that our plan is not to build those massive theme parks. We will have many activity parks around cities in China. China is an extremely important market for us. It is a fast-growing market.”

The Finnish ABL is inside an existing theme park, but the Chinese versions are set to come in different sizes and formats, potentially existing in local parks.

The firm is also opening Angry Birds stores in Beijing and Shanghai “very soon”, though an exact timeline wasn’t revealed.

The park launch puts China alongside the UK, which also awaits the bird parks.(source:mobile-ent

2)Amazon brings test driving for Android games to mobile

by Eric Caoili

Amazon’s Appstore has released a new update that allows consumers to try out Android games and applications, without having to download them first and before deciding to buy them.

This new “Test Drive” option is designed to make it easier for consumers to try out apps and decide whether to pay for them. Apple’s App Store does not offer a comparable feature, while Android’s built-in Google Play shop only allows users to purchase a game, and then return it within 15 minutes if they don’t enjoy it.

Amazon has offered the Test Drive feature since launching its alternative Android store last year, but users could only test out games and apps in their browsers. Starting this week, they can use a beta version of Test Drive on the Amazon Appstore on select mobile phone models.

Developers are not required to make any changes to their games to make them compatible with the feature. When they submit their games or updates, Amazon automatically tests the apps for Test Drive. So far, the company has put up over 5,000 apps with Test Dive for Android phones on Appstore.

Test Drive currently supports apps that use touch screen and accelerometer inputs, but not games that use Java Native Interface, keyboards, multi-touch, microphones, cameras, gyroscopes, near-field communication, or GPS. Amazon plans to add support for these features in the future, and will automatically re-test apps as it does.

Amazon is able to let users try out Android games on their phones without downloading them — removing one more barrier that might prevent consumers from looking at a game — by streaming gameplay in real-time from its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud servers.(source:gamasutra

3)Apple shipped the most mobile PCs in the world, thanks to the iPad

Meghan Kelly

Apple shipped 17.2 million mobile PCs in the first quarter of 2012, leading the world in units shipped by 22.5 percent, according to a study by NPD DisplaySearch.

You would think the market would be saturated by now, but Apple is still shipping tablets and laptops by the millions — and with new releases like the latest iPad, interest will continue to grow. Compared to the same quarter last year, Apple shipped 118 percent more mobile PCs, eighty percent of which were iPads. That accounts for 162 percent growth year over year.

The latest iPad launch, which occurred in March 2012, was an obvious and major contributor to Apple’s share of voice in the mobile PC market. The company sold three million iPads in its debut weekend alone, and began to roll the tablet out to a number of countries thereafter. A lot of its popularity stemmed from an improved screen, which quadrupled the amount of pixels available in the display, along with 4G connectivity.

The iPad accounted for so much mobile PC growth, that Apple didn’t even show up on the list of companies who shipped the most notebook units. HP won that game. But the amount of iPads shipped was enough to raise Apple up over its competitors in the overall market.

Hp followed Apple in overall mobile PC shipments with 8.9 million unit shipped. Acer came next with 6.9 units ships, Lenovo with 5.9 units shipped and Dell brought up the rear with 5.6 units shipped.(source:venturebeat

4)iPhone 5 may get a taller (but not wider) 3.95-inch display

Devindra Hardawar

How exactly will Apple fit a larger screen into its next iPhone? If the latest rumor is true, it’s by making the display (and resolution) taller.

Apple is reportedly testing prototype phones with 3.95-inch displays, which are taller, but remain just as wide as the existing iPhone’s screen, 9to5Mac reports. By elongating the screen, the next iPhone could have a resolution much closer to the 16×9 movie format, which means it’ll be even easier to watch widescreen films.

The news follows reports from the Wall Street Journal and Reuters last week practically confirming a 4-inch display in the iPhone 5.

Writes 9to5Mac’s Chuck Remington: “Apple will not just increase the size of the display and leave the current resolution, but will actually be adding pixels to the display. The new iPhone display resolution will be 640 x 1136.  That’s an extra 176 pixels longer of a display.”

With that resolution, the iPhone 5 (or whatever it’s called) should still be able to boast a Retina Display. The site’s sources also say that Apple is testing builds of iOS 6 that add a fifth row of icons to the iPhone’s home screen. Additionally, the next iPhone will reportedly spot the long-rumored smaller dock connector, which should open up more room for internal hardware. 9to5Mac describes it as “between the size of a Micro-USB and Mini-USB connector.”(source:venturebeat

5)Gameloft makes move on Kindle e-readers with UNO

by Keith Andrew

Gameloft has announced it is to bring popular card game franchise UNO to Amazon’s Kindle e-readers, with the game launching across alKindle Keyboard, Kindle, Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G.

The game, which will sport a new gameplay system specifically for the devices, represents what the French publisher believes is a perfect match for the Kindle range’s userbase.

Got game

“Gameloft is excited to continue working with Amazon to optimise our games for their Kindle products,” said VP of publishing for the Americas, Baudouin Corman.

“As UNO is one of the most popular card games, we think the title is sure to resonate amongst Kindle users.”

Gameloft is by no means the first games publisher to target Amazon’s original e-reader range.

Back in February, Two Way Media launched Poker Squares for Kindle in the US, while the top six apps on the first Kindle were games six months after Amazon launched its original e-reader. (source:pocketgamer
