4)Strategy Analytics

1)iOS Sees First Subscription-Based Game Portal Via Big Fish

by Frank Cifaldi

iOS Sees First Subscription-Based Game Portal Via Big Fish

Seattle’s Big Fish Games has received approval from Apple to launch what will be the first subscription-based gaming portal on iOS devices.

The service will utilize the App Store subscription feature introduced earlier this year for the company’s Newsstand service, allowing users to digitally subscribe to periodical publications.

According to Bloomberg, subscriptions to the service will initially cost $4.99 and offer “dozens of games” on demand for unlimited play.

According to Big Fish founder Paul Thelen, that fee will increase to $6.99 next year as more games are introduced to the service.

As with individual purchases, Apple pockets 30 percent of the revenues incurred from subscription fees.

An Android version of the service is currently in the works, according to Thelen.

Big Fish has enjoyed a notable amount of success through the App Store. Its recently-released Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove Collector’s Edition HD currently ranks in the top 10 paid iPad game apps chart. (source:gamasutra

2)Zynga launches its first mobile game with location-based elements, Dream Zoo

by Jon Jordan

The fact Zynga has released an iOS game based around zoo animal breeding and nurturing is hardly worthy of a headline, given the popularity of the genre and the social gaming giant’s aggressive push into mobile during 2011.

Dream Zoo is significant, however, as being the first time the company has used location-based elements in its mobile games.

Where do you stand?

As we’ve discussed with leading companies in this field such as Ogmento, PerBlue and Booyah, it’s a tricky niche in terms of balancing gameplay with audience psychology.

Zynga’s take is fairly light, adding location-based bonus features using Apple’s Location Services.

This rewards players who play the game in multiple locations with free safaris, which are the mechanic for unlocking and discovering more exotic animals to add to your zoo. (source:pocketgamer

3)Disney reveals value of a cross platform strategy with 100 million coins transfered from mobile game into Club Penguin

by Jon Jordan

Unsurprisingly, I’m not a big Club Penguin fan, but the Disney-owned online community RPG for 6-14 year olds is massively popular with over 150 million users.

Puffle Launch, its mobile companion game for iOS and Android – it’s a physics trajectory game – is also popular with an active fanbase of around 150,000 players daily across mobile and web.

That’s a number Disney is looking to increase dramatically with the release of a Lite version for iOS and Android, which provides six of the paid game’s 36 levels for free,

What’s more significant, however, is the stickiness of its cross platform interaction as you use the same account across web and mobile.

In the two months since Puffle Launch was released, over 100 million virtual coins earned in the mobile game have been transfered into the main Club Penguin world.(source:pocketgamer

4)China becomes world’s no.1 smartphone market

by Zen Terrelonge

Country ships almost 24m units in Q3 and pushes the US into second place.

Market researcher Strategy Analytics claims the US shipped 23.3 million units in the three-month period but was beaten by China, which shipped an additional 600,000 devices.

Linda Sui, analyst, Strategy Analytics, said: “Smartphone shipments grew 58 per cent sequentially to reach a record 23.9 million units in China during Q3 2011.

“In contrast, smartphone shipments fell seven per cent sequentially to reach 23.3 million units in the United States. China has overtaken the United States for the first time to become the world’s largest smartphone market by volume.”

The firm claims this result is down to the Chinese market’s low-cost Android models such as ZTE and Huawei, although it’s Nokia that leads the market with 28 per cent.

Neil Mawston, executive director, Strategy Analytics,  said: “The US remains the world’s largest smartphone market by revenue, but China has overtaken the United States in terms of volume.

“China is now at the forefront of the worldwide mobile computing boom. China has become a large and growing smartphone market that no hardware vendor, component maker or content developer can afford to ignore.”

This shows China’s continued growth in the Asian emerging market following our reports China Mobile now has more than 638 million subs and over 100 million mobile consumers are using 3G.(source:mobile-ent

5)Kindle Fire wanted by 51 per cent of homes

by Zen Terrelonge

Singes consumer desire for the iPad to 49 per cent.

Digital researcher Parks Associates says in the Christmas tablet battle, Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Apple’s iPad 2 are almost neck and neck for product preference.

The report says of the 16 per cent of US broadband homes planning on a buying a tablet in the holiday period, 51 per cent would choose the Fire, which leaves the iPad sitting on 49 per cent.

It’s likely device cost will play a key difference in making the choice between the two, as the Kindle Fire retails for $199 against the $499 iPad.

Results show those aged 45+ prefer the Fire compared to those with higher incomes and a higher education, which prefer the iPad.

Tricia Parks, CEO, Parks Associates, said: “Having already established itself as the leading brand in e-readers, Amazon’s entrance into the adjacent tablet space will disrupt the market.

“Amazon’s competitive pricing, combined with its considerable media and application offerings, makes the Kindle Fire a serious tablet contender, likely to scoop up market share among bargain shoppers.”(source:mobile-ent

6)Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk HD Remake Coming To Mobile Devices

by Mike Rose

Codemasters announced today that it is set to launch a HD version of the classic 1991 release Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk next month for smartphone and tablet devices.

Due for release on December 9, the remake will be available to download for iPad, iPhone and Android devices.

The original Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk was released by Codemaster in December 1991, for a variety of platforms. This new version is being developed by DNA Interactive, while Paul Ranson, the original game’s project director, is heading development.

Said Ranson, “20 years on and Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk remains one of the most memorable games in the series for its puzzles and humour and it’s an absolute pleasure to return to the director’s role for this HD edition.”

Dizzy co-creator Philip Oliver added, “It always astounds us what a loyal fan base Dizzy still has.”

“Even after all these years people remember Dizzy fondly and it’s great to see him return for his older fans and introduce him to a new generation of gamers.” (source:gamasutra

7)Android May Dominate the Numbers, But iPhone Most Desired

By Dan Rowinski

Advertising and data analysis firm Millennial Media issued its monthly mobile trends report this morning for October. It showed that the iPhone was the most used single device for the month with nearly 13% of all use across its network. While Android might dominate the ecosystem, the iPhone as a singular device is the most used smartphone on the market.

Apple also dominated the shares for original equipment manufacturers, taking 23.5% of impressions across the network. Apple beat out HTC (18.1%) and Samsung (17.24%). Android claimed 14 of the top 20 devices in impression share with the Motorola Droid X coming in the No. 2 spot behind the iPhone. It goes to show what we have known for a while: Android wins by the numbers but Apple’s smartphone is the most desired.

In terms of overall impressions by mobile platform, Android wins by a landslide with 56% of the pie in Millennial’s network. iOS comes in second with 28%, half of what Android does. Cut that in half again and you get Research In Motion’s BlackBerry. This validates another trend we have known for a bit: Android has completely stolen RIM’s market, now outperforming it in the ad department by a factor of four to one.

With the prevalence of Apple and Android smartphones gobbling up impression share, it is no wonder that the top input method was touch, with 69%. QWERTY plus touch, QWERTY by itself and just the a standard keyboard input rounded out the rankings with 11% and 10% rankings.

The most used apps were music and entertainment related with games, communications and social networking the next three. News has broken the top five types of apps by impressions, rising from the No. 9 spot in October 2010. Productivity tools, like Evernote, calculators or document apps rose to No. 6 in the new rankings coming back from an unranked position a year ago.

According to Millennial’s numbers, the top goals for developers in 2012 is to continue developing new applications (40%) with maximizing revenue (21%) the next highest goal.(source:readwriteweb
