fan page status(from pagelever)

fan page status(from pagelever)

Facebook engagement benefits(from Online PhD)

Facebook engagement benefits(from Online PhD)

1)Facebook changes how it tracks users, raising questions about true audience numbers (exclusive)

Matthew Lynley

Zynga may be losing some ground after spending years completely dominating the Facebook social gaming market.

Facebook today announced that it is changing the way it counts the number of active users who access an application on its site, a move that will lower perceived values of monthly active users. The actual traffic to Facebook apps has not changed, but the new calculations should be more precise and transparent, a Facebook spokesperson told VentureBeat.

One of the sites affected is AppData, which tracks an app’s monthly active users and is widely used as a metric for gauging success of some social app companies.

With the new changes, Zynga’s (and other social app companies’) recorded monthly active users — as measured by Facebook’s metrics — could fall. Sources familiar with the situation told VentureBeat that the drop would be less than 20 percent. AppData currently reports Zynga has 263 million monthly active users.

A drop of 11 percent or more would bring the company below its own reported number of monthly active users, 232 million, which the company reported when it filed  to go public in July.

(Zynga has not updated that number since then.) That would imply that Zynga has lost ground to social gaming companies like Electronic Arts and Wooga. Those companies are nowhere near Zynga in terms of users but are still top-ten developers, and have been slowly making inroads in social games.

“We support Facebook’s decision to change the way it measures the number of active users of its applications as it more accurately portrays the number of people who play Zynga games,” a Zynga spokesperson told VentureBeat. “As noted in our S-1 filing, we measure our player number on Facebook by how many people access our games and we are pleased that Facebook, and therefore AppData, will accurately reflect that number.”

With an IPO in the works, any perceived slow-down in the company’s growth could diminish its perceived value to potential public investors. Zynga is the most profitable high-profile company that has filed to go public this year and expectations are extremely high for the company now that it has hinted at plans to break away from Facebook. (It’s worth noting that VentureBeat’s Dean Takahashi had a story earlier that throws a little bit of skepticism on the company’s accounting practices.)(source:venturebeat

2)Namco Bandai Brings “Tales” And “The Idolmaster” Series To Mobage [Social Games]

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Nice win for DeNA today: partner Namco Bandai today announced [PDF] that it will bring two of its hit video game series to Mobage.

The first game is the far more important one: “Tales Of Kizna” is the first social game in the 16-year old “Tales” series of RPGS. Kizna is a card-based RPG that features over 100 characters that appeared in 15 previous “Tales” games on consoles.

Namco Bandai says that players will be able to build unique teams by “mixing” cards. Users can create or join guilds and battle large enemies (or other guilds) together.

“The Idolmaster” is Namco Bandai’s contribution to the idol-raising genre. Games like this are a dime a dozen in Mobage and GREE, but this game has the advantage of being part of a well-known series in the genre (the first Idolmaster game was released in arcades in 2005). It’s also the first “social” Idolmaster.

Players take on the role of a producer and get to choose between a total of 100 “idols” (stars) who appeared in previous games. The goal is to make it to eventually produce a “top idol unit”. Genre-wise, this will be the first Idolmaster card battle game (it has no title yet).

Namco Bandai says both titles will hit Mobage next month. The company recently launched a joint venture with DeNA, BDNA.(source:serkantoto

3)The Average Facebook Post Lives 22 Hours And 51 Minutes

by Brian Carter

Your first goal with each post from your business Facebook page is to be seen by fans. But every post has a limited lifespan.

During that time, your fans see the post in their news feed and may like or comment.

But after a certain point, Facebook stops showing the post in their news feed.

If you knew the average lifespan of your posts, you could post again right when the previous posts died off. Your page would always have a live post out there for fans. You’d be maximizing your possible exposure.

How Often Should You Post?

The changes to the news feed emphasize recency by blending top stories and recent stories.

There’s been talk about whether pages need to post more often: Should the typical recommendation to post once a day shift to posting two or three times per day?

The chart above, using data from the advanced Facebook page analytics company PageLever, shows that for pages with large fan bases, the shortest post lifespan was 11 to 13 hours. The longest was 50 hours, which was over a weekend.

Caveats For This Study

This data comes from only 20 posts — an incredibly small sample size — but the posts are from pages with more than 2 million fans each, representing a lot of engagement.
In the Facebook application programming interface, comments have a time stamp, but likes don’t — they time stamp likes in PageLever. Impressions are less reliable, so stick with the middle column for data

It’s possible that since the average page has fewer fans than these sample pages, they’ll get less engagement and their post lifespan will be shorter.
Read more details in the PageLever post.

Manually Discover Your Own Post Lifespan

Even without PageLever, you can check your own page’s typical post lifespan. Just check your post every hour and count its likes and comments.

Impressions are updated irregularly, so they’re not as reliable a way to check. Likes are much more reliable, and tend to happen in larger numbers than comments. So likes are the best metric to watch for post-die-off.

Once the likes per hour drop off dramatically, it’s time to post again. The only thing is, it’s a drag to do this manually, around the clock.(source:allfacebook

4)Facebook Gets More +1 Clicks Than Google Plus

by David Cohen

Google Plus users have clicked the +1 button for the homepage of which social network most?

If you guessed Google Plus, you guessed incorrectly.

The Sociable reported that the Facebook homepage was the subject of around 44,000 clicks of the +1 button on Google Plus, which is 1,000 more than the Google Plus homepage gets.

What’s more, the total for the Google Plus homepage has barely moved since The Sociable began tracking it Sept. 25, while Facebook’s total has risen from around 36,000 on that date.

The Sociable said it used Google’s +1 Chrome extension to obtain the figures, adding that Twitter has seen modest growth, as well, at some 14,000 +1 clicks currently versus 12,000 September 25.

5)Key Russian social network adds facial recognition to photos

by Mike Butcher

Odnoklassniki, is the second largest social network in Russia, behind Vkontakte, and is part of the recently floated Mail.Ru Group. Facebook’s market share in Russia has never passed 5%, according to ComScore (or 5 million people a month). Odnoklassniki has 25-26 million visitors a month. That gives some context to the news today that Odnoklassniki today launches a new face detection feature powered by Israeli-based startup face.com, which already provides its technology to Facebook.

The two new features are: face detection and facial recognition. Face detection makes it possible to automatically determine the number of people in a photo and provide users with a an easier tool for tagging.

Facial recognition comes after the platform has been taught to recognise lots of faces via tags (clearly), eventually reducing tagging to a simple «yes» or «no» question.

Despite this move, Odnoklassniki says they are “seriously considering their users privacy.” Let’s hope so. It says private photo albums will remain un-trawled by Face.com’s app, and users will also be able to prevent the system from tagging them by changing their personal settings.(source:techcrunch

6)3D Slots, Spa Life Top This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games

AJ Glasser

Social Games 3D Slots stays on top in this week’s list of emerging Facebook games, while Spa Life and Heroes of Neverwinter round out the top three.

At No.4, we see Serf Wars beginning a growth spurt as the title “officially” launches on Facebook. We got an early look at the game six months ago after the game launched in open beta.

Just a reminder that our list of emerging Facebook game is defined by growth among titles between 100,000 and 1 million monthly active users. We use this as an arbitrary set of parameters to determine the health of a game with the idea that it’s “made it” when it breaks 1 million.(source:insidesocialgames

7)Facebook Engagement Benefits Students: Infographic

by Jackie Cohen

Whether Facebook benefits students depends on how they use it. Those who focus on engaging with other people on the social network come out ahead.

So concludes Online PhD in an infographic summarizing Facebook use among students has evolved since the site hatched as a college-only network. Among other highlights:

College students spend an average of 100 minutes a day on Facebook, logging on six times daily;

Some 82 percent of colleges have Facebook pages for outreach to prospective students, but

Three quarters of the kids applying for college think the schools need to provide a private community for incoming students. (source:allfacebook
