1)25 per cent of iPhone users may switch to a Samsung Galaxy S4

by Zen Terrelonge

Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy S4 tonight, we think, and 25 per cent of UK iPhone users are considering ditching their Apple smartphone in exchange for the mysterious mobile from the South Korean rival, according to shopping offers service VoucherCodes.co.uk.

The rumoured 13MP camera and eye-scrolling features are among reasons for the new interest, though 59 per cent of existing iPhone users claim they’ll stand by their iOS device, while 30 per cent of BlackBerry users will stick with BB.

It seems Samsung should bear 45-54 year-olds in mind when marketing future devices, with 69 per cent of the demographic planning on switching to the brand for their next upgrade. 50 per cent of men, meanwhile, also fancy a spot of Samsung action.

Additionally, VoucherCodes says it experienced a 24 per cent spike in traffic coming to the site from Samsung devices.(source:mobile-ent

2)Rovio Releases “The Croods” Game, Inspired By The Dreamworks Animated Film

Jordan Crook

Rovio has just released its latest game, based on the Dreamworks animated film “The Croods”.

The Finnish based mobile gaming company partnered with Dreamworks to make the game a reality, using the same characters and premise in the game as you might see in the movie. It’s quite simple: The Croods are a family of cavemen trying to progress past the stone age with new ideas.

Traveling from landscape to landscape, the Croods work to hunt and gather food to stay alive, discovering and taming new creatures along the way.

And by “creatures”, I literally mean “creatures.” Rovio describes these creatures as unlike “anything you’ve ever seen” with names like Girelephant or Molarbear. There’s even a hint of Pokemon in the press release on Rovio’s blog: “Think you can catch them all?”

You can also get help from the family patriarch, Grug, to create inventions, a little like Bad Piggies creating vehicles. And, if that wasn’t enough, users can also customize their characters and homes with accessories.

Rovio has plenty of experience working with film studios on projects. The company released Angry Birds Rio alongside 20th Century Fox’s Rio movie, and Angry Birds Star Wars has been a hit since inception.

The collaboration also makes sense considering that Rovio has cartoon plans of its own, short animated films which will be distributed weekly through their game apps themselves.

3)Apple: Users are running away from inferior Android

by Keith Andrew

Breaking its signature silence when it comes to commenting on rivals, Apple has lashed at Android, with SVP of marketing Phil Schiller claiming its fragmented nature is putting users off.

In an interview with Reuters, Schiller said Apple’s research suggests four times as many consumers are switching from Google’s platform to iOS than the other way around, with Apple’s focus on the user experience paying off.

Old OS

Schiller also pointed to Google numbers detailing the userbase split between the various versions of its platform.

“With their own data, only 16 percent of Android users are on year-old version of the operating system,” he told Reuters.

“Over 50 percent are still on software that is two years old. A really big difference.”

On that score, Schiller claims rumours suggested that Samsung’s Galaxy S IV – due to be revealed in a matter of hours – will likely “ship with an OS that is nearly a year old” and that “customers will have to wait to get an update.”

Big numbers

Despite this, Schiller had to acknowledge Android’s impressive activation rate – 1.5 million devices activated a day according to Google’s latest figures – but claimed the race for top place isn’t all about big numbers.

People who have iOS devices, he claimed, use them far more than equivalent Android handsets according to independent research, and iOS in his view provides a far superior user experience.

“At Apple we know that it’s not just enough to have products pumped out in large numbers,” he said. “You have to love and use them. There is a lot of data showing a big disparity there.”

Schiller’s comments come as numerous sources suggest Android boasts a healthy global lead over iOS, despite iPhone 5 remaining the top selling device in most major regions.

Samsung’s Galaxy S III passed the 40 million sales mark in mid-January, selling at a daily average of 190,000 units since launch in May 2012. Apple, meanwhile, sold 47.8 million iPhones during its last financial quarter.(source:pocketgamer

4)Journey creator’s next game may be F2P, even though he’s not a fan

By Frank Cifaldi

“If we do actually end up going to free-to-play, we will make sure that you don’t pay because you are not happy, you pay because you are happy.”
-Thatgamecompany’s Jenova Chen ponders his next move in an interview with Joystiq’s Jordan Mallory.

Now that Chen’s studio is no longer in an exclusive contract with Sony, its follow-up to last year’s Journey could very well end up using a microtransactions-based business model, though that decision is still up in the air. Should the game go that way, though, Chen says it won’t be like the majority of free-to-play games he’s experienced, which he says encourage microtransactions by frustrating the player.

“I would rather see a game where you play to feel happier, and to make other people like you, and the make the people you care about happy,” he explained. “That’s something I’ve never seen in a [free-to-play] game.”

Chen, who designs games based on an emotional aesthetic, says that he’ll only go that route if microtransactions actually compliment the feeling he’s trying to evoke in players.(source:gamasutra

5)Kabam Launches Game Publishing Business Unit

By Camilla Noon

Kabam has announced a new business unit that will bring its technology platform and marketing tools to third party developers.

Third-party games offered via Kabam Publishing join those developed by Kabam’s in-house development teams to become the twin foundations of Kabam’s free-to-play gaming juggernaut, offered on iOS and Android mobile devices as well as on Facebook and the Web.

In connection with the launch of Kabam Publishing, the company announced that 15 games from third-party partners are already available to Kabam players. They include such titles as Wartune, from Reality Squared Games in China; Clash of the Dragons from 5th Planet Games in Roseville, Calif.; and Book of Heroes from Venan Games in Cromwell, Conn. Other developers are in Hungary, Japan and Korea. The company expects to have as many as 50 third party games by year end.(source:socialgamesobserver
