2)EA goes on killing spree, shuts down four more games on June 18

by Brandy Shaul

Just as soon as we learned that Dragon Age: Legends will be shut down on Facebook and Google+, we’ve also discovered the Electronic Arts isn’t stopping there, and in fact is shutting down four more games across Facebook and Google+ next month.

If you’re a fan of Age of Immortals, Six Gun Galaxy or Starship Command on Facebook, or even Bejeweled Blitz on Google+, your time with these games will come to an end on June 18, when servers for all four games will be shut down, according to EA’s service updates website.

If you’ve been playing Age of Immortals, you’re encouraged to try another game: Age of Champions, and will receive a special “player appreciation package” within Age of Champions if you reached at least level 9. This package includes in-game currency, a special themed badge for your profile, exclusive units and gear.

Meanwhile, Six Gun Galaxy players are being offered a similar package, but this one in Superhero City. You’ll be required to reach at least level 6 in Superhero City, and if you do just that, you’ll receive a special Six Gun Galaxy themed agility card, a piece of gear, in-game currency and a badge for your in-game profile. Starship Command’s package also comes by way of Superhero City, as you’ll be able to earn a free bundle of in-game currency if you check it out and reach level 6.

Perhaps the most interesting of these closures is Bejeweled Blitz on Google+. The Facebook version of the game is still incredibly popular, pulling in almost 10 million monthly active players (according to AppData). This then clearly points to the state of Google+ as a games platform, and not to the quality of Bejeweled Blitz as a standalone product. Are games simply being overlooked by users on Google+, or is the entire Google+ platform so devoid of active users that no game will be able to survive? It’s too early to say for sure (and one could make the argument that anyone that cares about the game is already playing it on Facebook), but this doesn’t bode well for the future of the Google+ Games service if such a popular Facebook game no longer merits support there.

Add these closures to the closing of Restaurant City on Facebook and Restaurant City: Gourmet Edition for iPad on June 29 and you have an incredibly sad month for EA’s social gamers. If more casualties are announced, we’ll make sure to let you know.(source:games

3)Jesus comes to Facebook, shows no sympathy for the devil [Launch] — Developer Lightside Games decided to make Facebook a little more holy on the same day Blizzard’s Diablo III was released, launching Journey of Jesus: The Calling. Players travel with Jesus through the Gospels, learning about the history of Ancient Israel as they do so. Publications like The Escapist took note of Journey of Jesus: The Calling because its cover photo features Jesus standing triumphant over Diablo in a boxing ring. This isn’t Lightside’s first such game, either, having previous released Journey of Moses on Facebook.(source:insidesocialgames

4)Facebook games now playable on tablets with TheWorx — Facebook’s mobile app lets people access the network on the go, but it doesn’t let users play social games. VentureBeat reports a new Facebook app, TheWorx,  runs on tablets and converts Flash games to video which is then streamed to the iPad. When the app starts up, users see what looks like a standard Facebook page, but with a tab for apps. This tab allows users to select games they play on Facebook’s normal website and play it on their iPad. TheWorx is expected to launch in June.(source:insidesocialgames

5)Webkinz now inhabiting Facebook [Launch] — The Popular Webkinz stuffed animals can finally call Facebook home, courtesy of their new social game Webkinz Friends. The game works similar to the original virtual world Webkinz World works. Players register their stuffed toys with the social game (which can also be registered with Webkinz Friends), receive virtual prizes and build up a town for their Kinz to live in.(source:insidesocialgames

6)Voltage Opens Office In the US, Wants To Publish Social Dating Sims Globally [Social Games]

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Tokyo-based (and listed) social game maker Voltage is famous in Japan for covering a very specific genre: social dating simulations. In these games, players are supposed to “date” virtual characters in various settings, usually embedded in a narrative that guides users from one situation to the next.

There are various types in this genre: games for girls wanting to date boys and vice versa, and games with a gay theme.

Voltage focuses on the first type and now plans to bring their catalogue (they publish games on GREE, Mobage, and Mixi) to the world.

The company announced plans to establish “Voltage Entertainment USA” within this month but so far didn’t specify when exactly. Apparently, the US office in San Francisco will be led by the CEO of Voltage proper, Yuzi Tsutani.

The plan is to bolster efforts to distribute social dating and love simulations on smartphones to the English-speaking world.

So far, Voltage has rolled out two such titles on Android and iOS in English, Pirates In Love and My Forged Wedding.(source:serkantoto
