1)Two thirds of (upgradeable) Apple mobile devices running iOS 7 today

Two thirds of (upgradeable) Apple mobile devices running iOS 7 today

John Koetsier

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced this morning that two thirds of iPhones are running iOS 7 already. At least I think he did.

Actually what he said, precisely, was this:

“Nearly two-thirds of the devices are running iOS 7.”

I assume that means iPhones and iPads, but it was unclear from Cook’s wording, which I assume was a bit of a mistake, if he means recent iPhones and iPads. Because, of course, not all iPhones are capable of running iOS 7. iOS 7 is the biggest change to iOS since the first iPhone, Cook also said, and within five days of its launch, 200 million devices were running the new operating system. Interestingly, although that’s fast, it’s not as fast as iOS 6.

Either way you slice it, it’s the fastest large upgrade cycle in history. Yes, faster than Android, which is much more fragmented due to the many more players in its device and software ecosystem.

“It blows away the other guys,” Cook said, referencing Google.

Apple also sold nine million iPhones in the first weekend of sales, Cook said. ”When we see customer response like this, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”(source:venturebeat

2)Consumers want more engaging and personalised mobile web experiences

by Zen Terrelonge

Netbiscuits offers brands a route to success.

Mobile phone shipments grew by six per cent year-on-year in Q2 to reach 432 million units, while tablet shipments rose 65 per cent to hit 52 million units.

The trend means mobile strategy is a must if businesses want to achieve success.

Savvy brands are putting mobile at the heart of their marketing materials to achieve customer engagement and loyalty, for consumers want speed and flexibility.

New research from mobile web solutions provider Netbiscuits shows why customers choose the web over native apps when accessing brand content on mobile devices.

The data also notes the habits around browsing, making payments and much more.(source:mobile-ent

3)After Overtaking DeNA’s Market Cap, Colopl Now Boasts 10 Million Users For Its Hit Game Quiz RPG

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Colopl (3668), the Tokyo-based company which I recently profiled as the biggest mobile game maker you never heard of, is on a roll.

The stock has been going up and up as of late, making Colopl reach a staggering US$3.4 billion market cap today at the Tokyo Stock Exchange (it was even higher a few days ago).

By way of comparison: social gaming behemoth GREE (3632) is currently listed with US$1.9 billion. DeNA (2432) stands at US$3 billion.

So in other words, Colopl’s market cap is now higher than that of GREE (over 40 million registered users in Japan) and DeNA (over 50 million users). It was already higher than GREE when I profiled Colopl in September, while Colopl actually overtook DeNA on October 2 already. So much for the power of platforms nowadays.

The background here is that some investors and people in Japan’s game industry assume that Colopl could be the next GungHo (3765).

And the biggest reason for the hype around Colopl is Quiz RPG: Wizard & Wiz the Black Cat, which is – as the name indicates – a mix between quiz game and RPG.

Today, Colopl reported the title hit 10 million registered users in Japan alone (it’s available in English and Korean, too).

Colopl launched Quiz RPG in March this year on Android, followed by an iOS version in April.

The game amassed around 3 million users across both platforms until August, the month Colopl started advertising it on TV.

User acquisition started picking up quickly: on October 4, Quiz RPG already had 8 million downloads. On October 11, that number grew to 9 million before the announcement today that the game reached 10 million users on October 20.

So there is some reason to believe Quiz RPG could turn into the “next Puzzle & Dragons“, Japan’s top smartphone game at the moment.

As I am frequently pointing out: Japanese companies that see that a game “works” usually use TV as the marketing channel of choice to try to drive millions of players to a specific title in a matter of days or week. It has worked before.

To celebrate the 10 million user milestone for Quiz RPG, Colopl has started an in-game campaign in which players can get a special character card and other items for a limited period of time.(source:serkantoto

4)Net cafes falling out of favor among Chinese players

By Kris Ligman

In its recently released 2013 Chinese Gamers Report, Asian games market analytics firm Niko Partners has observed a downward trend in the use of internet cafes (or “iCafe”) for games.

The report reveals that internet cafes have slipped from a top position in the Chinese mainland to being ranked behind homes (64 percent) and places of employment (19 percent), holding onto a mere 17 percent of the market as a primary location for video game play.

“This latest milestone in the downward trend [of internet cafes] has implications on everything from spending habits to how gamers select games,” says the report.

Furthermore, while Niko Partners does note that the way has recently been opened for legal acquisition of home game consoles in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, wide availability of this hardware on the local gray market means that this deregulation, on its own, can’t account for the sharp rise in home playing in the last year.

As far as overall numbers are concerned, Niko Partners identifies the total number of PC players in mainland China as having risen to 208 million this year, while players of mobile games have reached 288 million. (source:gamasutra

5)Big Fish begins pushing out Android games to PC and Mac

by Keith Andrew

Casual gaming specialist Big Fish is to open up Android games on its portal to PC and Mac users, satisfying what the company claims is an audience of 80 million.

Developers launching on Big Fish’s platform can launch their games on either format simply by implementing the company’s ecommerce APIs, with Big Fish utilsing BlueStacks’ app player technology.

‘Huge win’

“Big Fish is now able to offer Android games to the more than a billion consumer PC and Mac devices worldwide,” said Big Fish founder and CEO Paul Thelen.

“This is a win for both our customers and game developers. Android developers can, for the first time, access a huge player base through Big Fish’s global PC and Mac app store. And our customers on PC and Mac will now be able to enjoy many new games previously not available to them, including hundreds of hit free-to-play games not supported natively on PC or Mac.”

BlueStacks said the move represented a “huge win for mobile developers”, enabling them to reach new audiences with “no extra work”.

“There is no one bigger in the casual gaming space than Big Fish and there are many developers that we have worked with in the past interested in this new market opportunity,” added BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma.(source:pocketgamer
