The new version of Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 4.1 has been released but does it fix the proximity sensor issue?

Initial reports indicate that the update has largely solved the proximity issue with just a few iPhone owners complaining that their phone is still dropping calls or putting them on mute.

The update is available for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2 to 4. And it also brings some new features, as well as bug fixes.

These include Game Center, which enables multi-player functionality and shared leaderboards; Apple TV, which allows users to rent TV shows from iTunes for 99p, although these are limited to US shows; and High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos, a clever process that involves three versions of the same photo being taken with different exposures to ensure as much of the photo as possible is visible.

The Game Centre has been met with some criticism as it does not integrate with Facebook or other social networks so that you can actually enjoy social gaming with friends, which is the point of it. It’s also been pointed out that many games already have leaderboards and multi-player modes over Wi-Fi, rendering the Game Centre pointless.
