1,The man that has guided Nintendo as its president and chief executive officer since 2002 has passed away.

Satoru Iwata, who oversaw one of the biggest eras for the gaming publisher, died due to complications from a bile-duct growth on Saturday, according to a statement. He was 55. The top two executives at Nintendo are now senior managing directors Genyo Takeda and Shigeru Miyamoto.

As a Nintendo executive, Iwata is best known for spearheading the “blue ocean” strategy that had the company build products for people that didn’t consider themselves traditional gamers. That led to the Wii and DS systems, which were among some of the fastest selling and most popular consoles ever made.

Iwata took over the role of president and CEO in 2002 after his predeccessor, Hiroshi Yamauchi, retired. That was only two years after joining Nintendo in 2000.

But the Nintendo chief’s history with the company goes back a lot farther than that. He joined the game developer HAL Laboratory as a full-time software engineer in 1983 just after graduating. While working at that studio, he worked on beloved classics like EarthBound, Kirby, and Balloon Fight — all games that HAL worked hand-in-hand with Nintendo on.(source:venturebeat.com

2,In anticipation of the upcoming release of the Ant-Man film starring Paul Rudd, Kabam has updated Marvel Contest of Champions to include a swarm of new features related to the insectoid hero.

The update will roll out new characters Ant-Man, Yellowjacket, Elektra, War Machine, and more over the coming weeks, as well as special events and story quests tied in to the Ant-Man universe specifically. In case that’s not enough, there will also be new Summoner Masteries (first introduced in the Ultron update), and a new Alliance game mode to enhance how you interact with your Alliance.

This mode, called Alliance Quests, will allow players to traverse a brand-new map alongside their Alliance in real time. The map will be packed with difficult enemy champions and bosses, requiring Alliance members to work together simultaneously to bring down the big bads. The first of these, Ultron Prime, will be easier to tackle if you have Ant-Man on your roster, but new quests will continue to be introduced regularly after the update.(source:gamezebo.com

3,The researchers at Newzoo have provided fascinating new data to GamesIndustry.biz that offers some insight into just how hard it can be to survive in the world of mobile games development. One look at the weekly App Annie charts typically shows just a reshuffling on the top grossing games, but a deeper look into the revenues generated by the top 1000 games on iOS in June allows us to extrapolate what an annual average haul might look like for the top performing titles on Apple’s platform.

As you can see from the table below, if your game falls outside the top 20, you’re not going to be making very much, and if you’re outside the top 100, it’s going to be nigh impossible to even survive beyond a one or two-man team. Considering the absolute glut of titles that flood the App Store, the data paints a fairly bleak picture for developers aiming to make a living on iOS.

“Zooming in on iOS revenues of June in the US, Europe and China, we see that 170 different companies grossed $83,000 or more that month which, on an annual basis, would lead to a >$1M business. This is gross, so including the 30 percent that Apple then takes. $1M is an important threshold because you would need this to run a small game studio of 5 to 10 people. Of these 170 companies, 64 grossed more than $830,000 in June, or >$10M gross annual revenues (studio of 50-100 people),” Newzoo CEO Peter Warman explained.

“On a game level, the top 20 iOS games grossed on average $3.7M for both EU and China and $5.9M in US this June alone. In the US you can say that there are at least a hundred games that will gross around $7M or more this year from iOS revenues alone. For Europe and China both have a hundred games that will gross $2.5M or more this year,” he continued. “This of course is iOS only which represents just over half of the market in the US, half of the European market and a third of the Chinese market. On a global scale, iOS game revenues in the US, Europe and China represent close to 45 percent of the $30Bn worldwide market.”

While seeing data like this may be discouraging for mobile developers, Warman still believes that iOS and mobile in general can be wonderful opportunities for gamemakers – but he acknowledges that the PC is better for building a groundswell of support around certain titles.(source:gamesindustry.biz

4,Seven years ago today Apple bestowed upon us the iOS App Store. We’ve had our ups and downs through the years but I think we can all say that some amazing things have graced our mobile devices thanks to this platform.
Only a handful of us can predate the App Store in terms of our tenure in the mobile blogosphere, but we can remember the very first game released on the App Store. It was Super Monkey Ball. That accelerometer gameplay is still a blast and just think how many other great games have come our way because of the very inclusive developer atmosphere Apple fosters. Not every game gets accepted, but it’s a very rare platform where indie and big industrial developers can both thrive.

Happy birthday App Store, here’s to a long, healthy, and productive life!(source:touch arcade
