值得注意的是,在该榜单登顶的通常是游戏应用,像Poke和Google Maps这种实用或社交应用登顶的情况则较为罕见。

1)Acer may launch $99 Android tablet in early 2013

Jolie O’Dell

Acer is planning to launch a $99 tablet in the beginning of next year, according to anonymous sources for the Wall Street Journal.

The seven-inch device will run the Android operating system (version 4.1, a.k.a. Jelly Bean) and will reportedly be called the Iconia B1.

However, part of the low sticker price is the marketing plan: Acer wants to aim this device at developing markets. It’s unknown whether we’ll see it in the U.S. — particularly at that price.

Seven-inch tablets have been all over the place lately, and they range in both price point and functionality. On one end, you have Amazon’s Kindle Fire, hugely popular at around $160. And Google’s just-launched Nexus 7 is selling online from around $200 to $330 or so.

And then, there’s the iPad mini, the debutante of the fall, weighing in at $400 to just under $700.

“In the past few months, we’ve made project roadmap changes in response to big changes in the tablet market,” said the WSJ’s anonymous source close to the project.

“The launch of the Nexus 10 [$500 and up online] has changed the outlook for what makes competitive pricing.”(source:venturebeat

2)It’s A Facebook And Google World On Apple’s App Store, Poke Hits #1 A Day After Its Release

Drew Olanoff

Saturday, December 22nd, 2012CommentsRemember all of this excitement hoopla over Facebook’s latest standalone app, Poke, yesterday? You aren’t the only one that is interested, apparently.

As The Next Web reports, Poke by Facebook has hit the No. 1 free app spot on Apple’s App Store, just a day after being released.

Make no mistake about it, the big companies like Facebook and Google are going to have the best holiday season ever thanks to Apple and iOS. It’s very rare to see utility or social apps hold the top free app spot like Google Maps has over the past week, and like Facebook Poke probably will. It’s usually a game, or a boogers app that holds that down.

And they get massive downloads because of it, especially during this time of the year.

What does this mean for consumers…and for Apple? Most iOS users who are getting new devices, or even first-timers, are swayed by what’s hot on the App Store. The leaderboard is very important to onboard new users into the app ecosystem. Apple likes to highlight the best and brightest that shows off their technology, but the leaderboard shows what users are really interested in. Today, it’s all about Poke.

When Facebook said it was focusing on mobile, it wasn’t kidding. Holding the No. 1 free app spot is like having the biggest kiosk in a mall during the biggest rush of the year. This type of crowding from big companies isn’t what the App Store has seen over the years, as we usually have a big game launch right around Christmas, thus ruling the charts since Apple freezes new submissions and releases during the holidays.

Note that Snapchat is holding the No. 9 spot, and is clearly slipping in popularity, and Google is sitting pretty at both No. 2 (Maps) and No. 5 (YouTube). Even Pinger’s free texting and calling app is right up there at No. 6.

It’s also important to note that the new “hot” apps tend to surge up to the top quickly, as Poke clearly has, but remaining there for more than a few days is a real feat. Can Facebook do it? Let’s see as all of those new iPads, iPhones, Touches and iPad minis get opened next week. Also, having a billion users surely doesn’t hurt your distribution and marketing efforts.(source:techcrunch

3)Microsoft launches first game for iPhone, iPad with Xbox Achievements

John Koetsier

In an extension of the Xbox gaming ecosystem to iOS, Microsoft game studio You vs the Internet has launched Wordament, the first-ever game for iOS with Xbox Achievements, on the Apple app store.

Wordament is a real-time competitive word-finding game. Players find and trace out words in 4 x 4 tiles of letters, competing globally with other players for the most and best words in two-minute mini tournaments.

This is Microsoft’s first foray into extending its game universe on to Apple mobile operating system. Once users download and install the app, they can sign in to their Xbox account — or any Hotmail, SkyDrive, or Windows  account — and start playing. Using your Xbox account will help you earn up to 50 Gamerscore from 10 in-game achievements, and will give you access to your Xbox friends.

Apple, of course, has set up its own gaming hub for iOS for friends, achievements, and leaderboards, called Game Center. Launched in 2010, it still has not really found its way — with industry experts calling it “years behind industry standards,” and an outage a month ago hardly drew any notice.

So extending the Xbox gaming ecosystem to iOS is an interesting move by Microsoft. Realistically, of course, for now it is simply a toe in the water, from which Microsoft will gather data, gauge interest, and plan next moves.

Regarding the game itself, it’s the same game that is already available on Windows Phone and Windows 8, accessing the same game servers, and featuring the same players. Wordament is available for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish, with puzzles in five more languages.(source:venturebeat
