1)Q2 smartphone shipments: Samsung 52.1m vs Apple 26m

by Zen Terrelonge

Korean OEM steams ahead of its US rival with fresh support from Galaxy S III.

New data from Juniper shows that Samsung has shot off into the smartphone shipping horizon, distributing 52.1 million units in Q2, more than doubling Apple’s 26 million iPhones.

However, it should be noted that Samsung has a veritable army of smartphones on the market, which only continues to grow. Comparably, Apple has only released five iPhones, and it’s the newest models that buyers are clamouring over.

That said, the Korean firm’s lead is still impressive, and its Galaxy S III supported its growth by selling more than ten million units in under two months.

Meanwhile, RIM shipped just 7.4 million smartphones in Q2, trailing Nokia which hit 10.2 million as it waits to see whether the switch from Symbian to Windows Phone will pay off, while HTC reached 11.6 million.

Daniel Ashdown, research analyst, Juniper Research, said: “Sony should be doing better: it, like Samsung, has a global name and the Xperia brand is well-established but its marketing and products have been disappointing so far.”(source:mobile-ent

2)YouGov: Two thirds of HTC customers will not buy another HTC phone

by Tim Green

Stats reveal alarming demise of the Taiwanese smartphone maker.

Five years ago HTC was a peripheral OEM, churning out white label phones for operators and handsets based on Microsoft’s early – and frankly risible – versions of its Windows OS.

All that changed with the arrival of Android. Suddenly, HTC was making market-leading devices such as the Desire and Wildfire under its own increasingly cool brand ID.

Things haven’t gone so well in the last 18 months though, as Samsung has stolen the top end of Android while ZTE, Huawei and others have chased hungrily after the cheap end.

YouGov’s Smartphone, Mobile Internet eXperience tracker reveals the extent of HTC’s demise.

June 2012 saw future ‘HTC consideration levels’ fall to 30 per cent from 42 per cent in June 2011. In the same period, expectation levels for the phone manufacturer also fell – from 16 per cent to nine per cent.

The study also found that while HTC retains 34 per cent of its customers, 66 per cent will churn elsewhere.

Russell Feldman, associate director in YouGov’s Telecoms and Technology team, said: “The brand needs to act, and fast, in order to prove their worth in the fast paced industry that is the smartphone market.

“Marketing and advertising, as well as branding need re-evaluating in order to re-tempt churners and win new custom -  which is currently going to Samsung.”(source:mobile-ent

3)Zuckerberg: Building a Facebook phone ‘wouldn’t make much sense for us’

Sean Ludwig

Facebook building a phone “wouldn’t really make much sense for us to do,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said today during the company’s first-ever earnings conference call.

Today, the social networking behemoth posted $1.18 billion in revenue and a net loss of $157 million for the second quarter of 2012. But investors didn’t like what they saw — Facebook’s hares plunged more than 10 percent in after-hours trading.

One thing that could help calm those investors is a more comprehensive mobile strategy. Speculation has been flying about Facebook developing its own smartphone or phone-focused software.

Zuck might be playing with semantics, because a Facebook-focused OS could make a lot of sense for the company and he didn’t rule that out.

Responding to questions about Facebook’s mobile strategy, Zuckerberg said:

“We want to not just have apps that people use, but also be as deeply integrated into these systems as possible. We want to support a development ecosystem where other apps can build on top of Facebook, so that’s why you’ll see us do things like support Apple in the iOS integration that they wanted to do. There are lots of things that you can build in other operating systems as well that aren’t really like building out a whole phone, which I think wouldn’t really make much sense for us to do. So I do think that there’s a big opportunity for us here.”(source:venturebeat

4)HTML5 no threat to native apps

by Mike Shaw

Report says that the apps ecosystem has little fear.

A report by market research firm Strategy Analytics says that HTML5 will have just a minor impact on the apps ecosystem.

In fact, far from replacing native apps, the report declares that HTML5 will result in the rise of hybrid apps that combine an HTML5 core with native APIs.

Josh Martin, director of apps research, Strategy Analytics said: “HTML5 is not the future of apps. While developers dream of ‘write once run everywhere’ the fragmented support for and limited APIs within HTML5 make this impossible.

“In fact, we predict the hybrid app is the future. Existing business models are protected, differentiation among and within ecosystems remains intact, and consumption continues unabated.

The end result is the continued dominance of iOS, Android, and increasingly Windows Phone.”(source:mobile-ent

5)Smartphone and tablet game sales push Gameloft Q2 revenues up 35% year-on-year to €50.4 million

Kathleen De Vere

French mobile developer Gameloft posted record Q2 2012 earnings today, reporting sales of €50.4 million ($61.9 million), up 35 percent year-over-year and 12.5 percent quarter-over-quarter.

During the second quarter Gameloft’s revenue from smartphone and tablet games increased by 119 percent year-over-year. Smartphone and tablet game revenues now account for more than half of the company’s total sales. By comparison, smartphone and tablet revenues were responsible for 40 percent of Gameloft’s total revenue in Q1.

The company also highlighted the growth of its in-app purchase and advertising revenues. 60 percent of the company’s smartphone sales now come from those revenue streams, up from the 50 percent Gameloft reported in Q1. Although Gameloft’s recent hits like The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man command a premium paid app price of $6.99, both games also feature additional in-app purchases, a model that has become increasingly effective for the company.

Gameloft also reported it now has 55 million monthly active users, up considerably from March, when the company reported it had a user base of 35 million MAU.  North America accounted for 33 percent of revenues, Europe and the Middle East 26 percent, Asia Pacific 22 percent and Latin America 20 percent.

Gameloft has adjusted its earning estimates for the year based on its results, and is now targeting €200 million ($246 million) for 2012, a figure that will see revenues rise by 22 percent year-over-year.

Gameloft’s stock rose slightly on the news, closing at €4.74 ($5.83) a share.(source:insidemobileapps

6)78 per cent of Brits use a smartphone as primary web browsing option

by Zen Terrelonge

But the device could be riddled with malware, as 52 per cent are in the dark about smartphone security.

Mobile management firm Kaspersky Labs teamed with YouGov to find 93 per cent of Brits own a smartphone, compared to 64 per cent that own a desktop PC.

The turn in the tide has made a huge impact, with 78 per cent using a smartphone as their first web browsing method, falling to 57 per cent for desktop users.

Meanwhile, Brits are the most lax Europeans for adopting smartphone security, with 52 per cent oblivious that such software even exists, while just 19 per cent have adopted anti-virus tech.(source:mobile-ent

7)IAB: two thirds of tablet owners prefer ad-funded to premium apps

by Tim Green

Especially when they’re rich media ads.

A study by the Internet Advertising Bureau, research agency Ipsos MediaCT, Celtra and Renault found a generally positive attitude towards advertising on tablets.

Almost two thirds of respondents would prefer tablet apps to have lower upfront costs with more ads, than higher upfront costs with fewer ads.

And they like richer campaigns. When comparing static and interactive ads, more than three times as many respondents thought that the interactive ads were innovative. Which is a bit obvious when you think about it.

But it’s not all wonderful.

30 per cent of the sample have a negative overall opinion of ads they’ve seen on tablets, and 95 per cent say it is important that ads are unobtrusive.

Again, hardly an earth shattering observation.

Gavin Sugden, research director at Ipsos MediaCT said: “When the advertising format is right, and deemed to be engaging, we saw that respondents’ behaviour changed, as well as the dwell time increasing to double the time – 44 seconds versus 22 seconds.”(source:mobile-ent

8)PopCap’s Solitaire Blitz goes mobile, plus a new Zombie dress-up game

by Libe Goad

If there’s one big trend we’re seeing in games these days, it’s the ability to play them anywhere on any device. So it’s no surprise to hear that that PopCap will be unleashing its ‘blitzified’ version of solitaire, Solitaire Blitz, on “the most popular smartphones and tablet devices” later this year. The game is currently on Facebook and has 1.8 million monthly players, according to AppData.

The official name of the mobile version is Mermaids! Solitaire Blitz, and despite the slightly different title, the game will still work hand-in-hand with the Facebook version, namely the game’s weekly tournament leaderboards.

As far as new stuff, the mobile version of PopCap’s social game will have exclusive achievements, which includes new card decks (and if you play this game, you know how awesome it feels unlock a new deck).

Also later this year, look for PopCap’s mobile zombie dress-up game. In PvZ Presents: Talking Zombatar, you will adopt a pet zombie that can be dolled up with sunglasses, shirts, pants and entire outfits, like the zombie samurai (pictured to the right). Some of the clothing options will be free and others can be purchased in Crazy Dave’s in-game store.

After you’ve readied your zombie for its public debut you can shoot photos, videos with your zombie and plaster them on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

You’ll also be able to talk to your virtual pal and have it repeat your words back to you in Zombie-ease, kind of like an undead version of the iPhone’s Siri.

Both of these games are free-to-play, which means you can download them for free and then have the option to buy in-game items, e.g. more energy so you can play more Solitaire or extra special costumes for your undead pal. (source:games
