1)Google’s AdMob is The Ruling Ad Network on Android Followed by Millennial, InMobi, Xyologic Finds

Kim-Mai Cutler

Berlin-based Xyologic, an app tracking company, went and looked at the ad networks that the top 1,000 most downloaded Android apps use. It turns out — and there’s no surprise here — that Google’s own AdMob is the leader, and by a longshot.

About half of the most-downloaded apps on the Android platform access a mobile ad or an ad exchange network through an SDK. About 89 percent of these use the Android SDK, followed by Millennial Media which reaches about 34 percent of the apps that have some sort of advertising SDK. Kleiner Perkins and SoftBank-backed InMobi comes in at 22 percent of the top Android apps that use a mobile advertising SDK.

AdWhirl, which is the mediation layer that AdMob acquired in 2009, reaches 17 percent of the top 1000 Android apps with an advertising SDK. Palo Alto-based rival Mobclix, which was acquired by Velti, has 15 percent. Mediation layers help developers incorporate ads from multiple ad networks and pick the ones that are going to pay them the most on an eCPM basis (or cost per 1,000 impressions).

The last handful of advertising companies like AdMarvel, Smaato, Burstly, Mopub, Nexage, Fiksu and Jumptap had comparatively negligible reach, with each having less than 3 percent of the top downloaded apps with advertising SDKs.

Less than one-quarter or 22 percent of the Top 1000 download apps on Android last month incorporated more than one ad network SDK. That means that half of the apps that do access mobile advertising networks use more than one of them.

Overall, the 1,000 apps that Xyologic looked at attracted 340 million downloads in October, about 54 percent of all Android downloads that month. Google last shared cumulative app install numbers in May, when it said the platform had seen 4.5 billion installs on a market base of 100 million activated devices. Yesterday, it revealed that the platform now has double that number with 200 million activated devices and we understand from a well-placed source that Android has passed 8 billion cumulative app installs.(source:insidemobileapps

2)24 per cent of smartphone owners wish they had a feature phone

Nokia 3310 set to make a comeback?

Discount and promotions site MyVoucherCodes claims not all of the UK’s smartphone users are content.

Results show 57 per cent prefer the simplicity of earlier devices from yesteryear, while 34 per cent are unimpressed with their latest mobile.

The report says 24 per cent long to return to an old device, while 76 per cent prefer their current mobile.

The average user has had ten mobile phones and when asked what their current handset is 29 per cent said iPhone, 26 per cent said BlackBerry, 19 per cent said HTC and 17 per cent said Nokia, according to the report.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “It’s fascinating to find out that a quarter of people actually prefer their earlier handsets to the ones they have now. Whilst mobile phones were a lot simpler about ten years ago, the transformation to today’s smartphones has been huge.

“Whilst older handsets are perhaps simpler to use, the mobile phones that are available today offer so much more! There are countless numbers of apps available, not to mention internet access and social networking opportunities. It would be interesting to see how people would cope if they actually did replace their current phone with an older model!”

3)Amazon to release Kindle smartphone for Q4 2012?

by Zen Terrelonge

Non-existant devices expected to cost up to $170 to create.

Analyst Citigroup claims the online marketplace will release a Kindle smartphone in the 2012 holiday season following the success it has seen since entering the e-book and tablet market with the Kindle and Kindle Fire respectively.

Analysts Mark Mahaney and Kevin Chang believe the device will be developed in light of their “supply chain channel checks in Asia.”

In May, Mahaney, Citi internet research analyst accurately predicted that Amazon would release a Kindle e-reader under $100 by the end of 2011.

The firm claims a mid-range device will cost between $150 to $170 to produce and thinks Amazon will retail the phone either at cost or under, which is something the marketplace is rumoured to be doing with Kindle Fire.

Mahaney and Chang are under the impression electronics manufacturer Foxconn International Holdings is developing the phone with Amazon, but that the final product is to be manufactured by Hon Hai’s TMS group, which creates Kindle e-readers.

Mahaney says: “With the clear success of the Kindle e-Reader over the past three years, and Kindle Fire possibly succeeding in the low-priced Tablet market, we view [a smartphone] as the next logical step for Amazon.”(source:mobile-ent

4)Former Crytek Staffers Davis, Efremov Join Ngmoco Sweden

by Mike Rose

Mobile games company Ngmoco continues to expand its new Sweden-based branch, with general manager Ben Cousins announcing that the studio has hired two more industry veterans.

Cousins revealed via Twitter that Tony Davis and Vesselin Efremov, both of whom originally worked at Crytek, have joined the mobile games studio.

Davis, who had previously worked at Crytek for over 10 years and held such positions as producer on Crysis 2 and game director on Ryse, has joined Ngmoco as senior designer.

Meanwhile, former Black Sea Studios art director Efremov has joined Ngmoco as senior artist. Black Sea was acquired by Crytek back in 2008.

“Great to help someone as senior as Tony get back to building content after being a manager,” said Cousins. Davis will be working for the studio remotely from Germany.

Of Efremov, Cousins said, “Artists with vision and practical skills are very hard to find. Vesselin is one of the best candidates I’ve interviewed for this type of role.”

“Vesselin will be initially working for us remotely from Bulgaria, finding a beautiful and appealing visual design for our first title.”

The Swedish Ngmoco branch was originally founded in June with Cousins the sole staffer. Soon afterward, former Crytek director Senta Jakobsen joined the studio.(source:gamasutra

5)Tablet buyers look to Amazon over Samsung and others

By Kevin C. Tofel

Tweet inShare22Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet has only just launched this past Monday and yet it may have captured the attention of consumers over older tablets. In a poll asking which brand of tablet people expect to buy, the Yankee Group found that Amazon was the No. 2 response, behind Apple. The 13 percent who responded in favor of Amazon exceeds that of Samsung, Motorola, Research In Motion and HP, all of which have had tablets on the market for 6 to 10 months prior to the new Kindle Fire.

The survey size of 230 is small, so taken alone, it doesn’t point to any sweeping conclusions about tablet brands. But when added to other data points, the survey should at least concern the current Android tablet makers. Essentially, a new tablet device that competes well on price and focuses on a few primary mobile activities may be more desirable than a higher-priced slate that’s been available for some time and offers a wider feature set and greater flexibility. Surprisingly, Barnes & Noble doesn’t appear in the survey, so my guess is that it wasn’t an option to choose.

For a second data point — and out of curiosity — I created a Google Trends graph for all of the tablets and brands over the past 30 days. I left out the TouchPad, because at this point, it’s not for sale. What happened when I ran the trend chart? The Kindle Fire came in second to the iPad here as well.(source:gigaom

6)iPad buyers are exactly who you think they are, but with pets (infographic)

Sean Ludwig

Although the $199 Kindle Fire hybrid e-reader and tablet has captured a lot of consumer attention in the last few weeks, Apple’s iPad is still the most popular and desired tablet device across the board, especially with kids. With the holiday season coming up, the likelihood of tablet purchases is greatly increased because there are so many unique options at different prices.

But which segment of the public is most likely to actually purchase an iPad this holiday?

Marketing data firm BlueKai has determined the most likely buyers of the iPad are currently wealthy, male, video-game-playing pet owners. (The last one’s a little weird, but adorable.) Another important factor that tells you who’s buying iPads is that 46 percent of tablet-owning households earn more than $100,000 a year. Most likely the average income for tablet owners will decrease as less-expensive tablets like the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet to get more popular, but even with those factored in, we’d expect the iPad to remain the king in the tablet space for quite some time.(source:venturebeat
