1,Sony Online Entertainment is to become Daybreak Game Company and turn its focus to multi-platform gaming. The company been acquired by Columbus Nova and is now an indie studio.

“Today, we are pleased to announce that we have been acquired by Columbus Nova, an investment management firm well known for its success with its existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. This means that effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multi-platform gaming company. Yes, that means PlayStation and Xbox, mobile and more.

As part of this transition, SOE will now become Daybreak Game Company. This name embodies who we are as an organization, and is a nod to the passion and dedication of our employees and players. It is also representative of our vision to approach each new day as an opportunity to move gaming forward.”

The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed and there’s no word from Sony as yet. GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to them for comment.

“We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming,” said company president John Smedley.(source:gamesindustry

2,Taiwan’s mobile game’s industry could see growth of up to 70 percent this year, according to Wu Wen-Jung of the Taipei Computer Association.

Speaking at the Taipei Games Show, he predicted that the mobile game sector would continue to snowball in growth throughout 2015, hitting a production value of around $474 million by the end of 2015.

As reported by Focus Taiwan, Wu said that mobile games are skyrocketing in popularity across the country, opening lucrative opportunities for games developers.

Mobile gains

Last year saw an eye-watering annual growth in the Taiwanese mobile games industry of 226 percent, according to figures from Taiwan’s Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute.

The upward trend, Wu believes, is largely thanks to the growth of mobile games across China and a shift in focus from traditional online game developers.

Back in October, 6waves CEO Arthur Chow told the audience at Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki 2014 how Taiwan is quickly establishing itself as a key mobile gaming market in Asia – largely thanks to a lack of competition in the market.

Also, because of shared culture and language with the mainland Chinese market, Taiwan is both a good proxy for western companies who want to see if their games will work in China and Chinese developers looking to release their games in international markets.(source:pocketgamer.biz

3,Dan Scheidegger has joined mobile entertainment network Scopely as its general manager for casual games.

“I was attracted to Scopely by the culture. Colleagues of mine who have joined praised the atmosphere of candor and accountability. That environment will enable Scopely to produce great products,” he told GamesIndustry.biz

Scheidegger was previously the head of game design at Storm8, joining the San Francisco studio in June 2011. He’s also worked in design for Booyah and Upper Deck.

“This is not a market where only unfair advantages succeed – there’s a new breakout hit from an unknown developer all the time. Developers need to devote their efforts to making highly entertaining games that players will want to make hobbies, not just play once or twice,” he said of the mobile market place and its future.

He also offered developers advice on maximizing engagement, marketing and monetization.(source:gamesindustry.biz
