1,Star Wars Commander, the free-to-play mobile titles, has reached the 5 million downloads milestone in the three weeks since its launch on August 21.

Publisher Disney Interactive has released a handy infographic to celebrate the news, which reveals that 58 per cent of Russian players have chosen to play for the Dark Side, while 57 per cent of Chilean players favour the Rebel Alliance.

“All of the content is accessible to anyone who wants to install and play through the game: you can get to all the [solo] campaign content, and you can play PvP. You are able to buy crystals to accelerate timers if you’re in a rush and want to progress faster, but all the content can be unlocked by anybody,” Disney Interactive’s executive producer and vice president of operations, Nathan Etter, told The Guardian in August.

“We’re also very cognisant that this is a competitive game, with that player-v-player component. It’s important to us that there isn’t a pay-to-win strategy, so we make it a level playing field for everyone who’s playing the game.”

2,According to statistics released by the ESA, United States educators are taking video games more seriously than ever before.

Three hundred and ninety colleges, universities and other academic institutions across all 50 states now offer professional certificates, undergraduate and graduate degrees in the subject, an increase of 50% over 2009′s total of 254.

The greatest number of courses can be found in California, where 73 are available, followed by 26 in New York and 24 in Illinois and Texas.

President and CEO of the ESA Michael D Gallagher said of the news: “Today’s colleges and universities are responding to student demand for high-quality and innovative video game design programs.”

“This explosive growth in video game education is the rocket fuel that will propel this industry to new heights,” he added.

The ESA, or Entertainment Software Association, is a trade organisation that works to promote the video game industry. It maintains a list of all game design courses in America on its website.

Drew Davidson, director of the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University welcomed the news, adding: “This is only going to increase the influence video games have in our culture as students graduate with more of a critical grasp of the unique capabilities of games, and apply that in their careers and lives.”

The news follows the foundation in July this year of The Higher Education Video Game Alliance, an organisation that seeks to bring universities and colleges offering these courses together and represent them to the outside media.(source:gameindustry

3,After selling the virtual reality startup Oculus VR to Facebook for $2 billion, Brendan Iribe has a lot of money. The chief executive of Oculus VR, the maker of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, is using that money to make a $31 million gift to the University of MarylandThe gift is the largest in history for the university in College Park, Md. Iribe, a UMD alumnus, is giving the money to fund construction of the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Innovation, and the remaining $1 million will establish the Brendan Iribe Endowed Scholarship in Computer Science. The center will encourage the study of virtual reality, which is a 3D computing experience that immerses the participant in a believable virtual world.

In addition, Oculus chief software architect and co-founder Michael Antonov, a graduate of UMD from 2003, is donating $4 million to the university. Most of this gift — $3.5 million — will support construction of the building. The rest will fund scholarships. Elizabeth Trexler, Iribe’s mother, is also donating $3 million to establish two endowed chairs in the Department of Computer Science.(source:venturebeat
