1)Zynga, director Brett Ratner to cultivate animated FarmVille TV show

by Joe Osborne

Zynga has once again come down with a case of FarmVille fever. As if a mobile rendition of FarmVille 2 weren’t enough, the game publisher has teamed up with director Brett Ratner (of Hercules fame) to create an animated FarmVille television show. The duo has enlisted the help of Canadian production house Six Eleven Media to get the TV show rolling.

“FarmVille is one of the most exciting brands out there today and its cross-platform opportunities are endless. I am thrilled to be expanding the brand with existing fans and also engaging a whole new audience,” Ratner said in a statement, Deadline reports. It seems that no network is currently attached to the potential FarmVille show.

That said, we would count on a FarmVille show to go straight to cable, but Ratner and crew could prove otherwise. This brings up another question: What the hell kind of audience would it cater to? Adults–the primary FarmVille fan base–generally steer away from cartoons unless they have a mature skew, and there’s not much about FarmVille that’s like, say, The Simpsons. If one thing is for certain, it’s that Zynga and Ratner plan to tackle quite a challenge. Then again, this is like that time rumor had it that a FarmVille movie was happening–that was over a year ago.(source:games

2)Study Finds That Apple Took 72% Of All Handset Profits, Samsung Got The Rest

John Biggs

A Canaccord Genuity study found that Apple took 72% of all handset profits worldwide while Samsung took 29%. While that is obviously a bit disconcerting, the thinking is that these are rounded-up numbers. What’s more troubling, however, is the fact that most other manufacturers – Nokia, Blackberry, and HTC – are either losing money or making no profit at all.

The report is detailed over at Fortune by Mssr. Elmer-Dewitt but it points to the fact that we are living in a world where Apple takes the lions share of profit on 21.7% of sales while Samsung smothers the rest with another 21%.

That’s why Blackberry is doomed: at this point in the game, there’s no room for third place let along a distant contender coming up behind. In this horse race, Apple and Samsung are way ahead and Blackberry is still on the farm.(source:techcrunch

3)ComScore: Apple remains top smartphone manufacturer, Samsung shows most growth

Scott Reyburn

Although Apple remained the top smartphone OEM, Samsung showed the most growth, moving the needle 2.3 percent for a 21 percent share of the smartphone OEM market, according to ComScore’s new Mobile Subscriber Market Share report.

The Reston, Va.-based analytics company reported that Apple once again took the top spot among smartphone OEMs, with a 36.3 percent share of the U.S. smartphone market, up two percent from Sept. 2012. Samsung, which ranked second, showed the most growth, up 2.3 percent to 21 percent. Taiwan-based HTC’s smartphone OEM market share dropped 1.8 percent to 10.2 percent.

Microsoft was the other OEM to show a drop, falling 0.7 percent to 9.1 percent. Finally, LG grew 0.5 percent, grabbing a 7.1 percent share of the smartphone OEM market.

The U.S. continued to show no signs of slowing down when it came to smartphone ownership, with 125.9 million people owning smartphones, up five percentfrom Sept. 2012 to Dec. 2012. As expected, more than half of those handsets people own in the U.S. ran Google’s Android platform. Android phones racked up 53.4 percent of the smartphone market share, up 0.9 percent. To no one’s surprise, Apple was the second leading smartphone platform, showing a 2 percent increase in market share to 36.3 percent. BlackBerry, which recently lifted the lid off BlackBerry 10 and changed its name from RIM to BlackBerry, saw a 2 percent decline in its platform market share to 6.5 percent. Lastly, Microsoft’s market share fell 0.7 percent and Symbian remained the same with a 0.6 percent share.(source:insidemobileapps

4)Telltale: Accessibility, choices key to The Walking Dead’s success

By Simon Carless

Finishing off the two days of sessions at DICE, Telltale CEO Dan Connors talked about the success of his company with the Walking Dead episodic game series,. He suggested that “changing our product to work in a new business mode” is the reason for the success of the company, after a number of years of stop and start success for the Puzzle Agent developer.

For The Walking Dead, Connors believes what’s important is being able to have people to discuss episodes in real time as they happen, and pushing cliffhangers at the player in real time.

Although one might argue that it’s the quality of The Walking Dead and the hotness of the franchise that has helped it hit the heights of success, it does seem like the episodic nature has fed into the hype. Yet more than that, the franchise is easy to play as an emotionally gripping interactive story.

Accessibility is particularly key to the series’ success. Connors notes that Telltale’s titles deliberately work with “not somebody who’s necessarily a great gamer.”

And the focus on high drama and emotion was shown by YouTube video extracts from playthroughs after a key character died, featuring screaming and crying YouTube-rs feeling the onscreen pain.

With The Walking Dead up for multiple gongs at the DICE Awards this evening, the series is top in the mind of many gamers – and while the creative team may be better able to explain what they did to make it a success, Connors’ unwavering belief over many years that episodic was indeed a viable business model appears to have paid off in spades.(source:gamasutra

5)40 million gamers strong, MoMinis rebrands as PlayScape

by Jon Jordan

Israeli mobile game development and distribution platform MoMinis is continuing to ramp up its activity during 2013.

So having recently raised $6 million in VC funds, bringing its total to over $15 million (the round remains open and it expects up to $4 million in additional investment), the company has undergone a rebrand.

It’s replaced MoMinis with a blanket adoption of its consumer-facing brand PlayScape.

In this way, the company will now be called PlayScape, while the MoMinis Studio development suite becomes PlayScape Studio.

Face off

“We’ve grown exponentially and evolved significantly, and we want our name and brand to reflect that,” said co-founder Eyal Rabinovich.

“PlayScape represents our vision of providing a fully integrated ecosystem, from development and distribution, to optimisation and data analysis in one holistic offering.”

As part of the rebranding, PlayScape has launched a new website, and is integrating its development studio, its distribution platform, and its data analysis center.

PlayScape Studio (seen above) has also gained new functionality, including enhanced visual effect capabilities to support hardware accelerated scaling and rotation, improved collision detection, full accelerometer support and Facebook integration.

Big numbers

The rebranding comes as the company looks forward to strong activity during 2013.

It plans to release 100 games that will integrate the PlayScape social layer, providing high retention and monetisation.

Indeed, PlayScape now reaches 40 million users, including 6 million monthly active users, 1 million daily active users, and more than 100,000 daily downloads of its games.(source:pocketgamer
