1)Supercell soars past EA to become App Store’s top publisher

by Keith Andrew

Finnish studio Supercell has become the App Store’s most successful publisher, slipping past the mighty Electronic Arts to sit at the top of the table.

That’s according to App Annie, which claims – based on revenues taken in the month of November – Supercell amassed more money that any other outfit across Apple’s marketplace.

Topping with two

Even more impressive is the fact that Supercell topped the chart with revenue from just two titles – Clash of Clans and Hay Day.

In comparison, second placed EA had a total of 969 games monitored by App Annie across the course of the month.

“The company’s emphasis on creating high-quality user experiences is paying off, as the company is monetising users at an extremely high rate,” said App Annie of the results.

“Their top ranking in iOS revenues is more impressive when one considers they do not appear in the top 10 downloads in the same month.”

For its part, Supercell said it was a sign of the health of the industry that a comparatively small outfit could outpace some of the industry’s biggest names.

Small star

“We are extremely humbled about the success of our games and these results, which are very encouraging especially for a smaller game developer like our self,” said the company in a

statement to PocketGamer.biz.

“This is definitely one of our biggest achievements so far and proves that even a smaller company can do well against the giants of the industry.

“Our secret is our culture and people. It all boils down to our motto ‘small is the new big’.

“The best part of our financial success is that we can create the company we’ve always dreamed of, where teams are small, extremely independent, and there’s no bureaucracy what so ever. We

focus 100 percent on creating innovative, high quality games that are handcrafted for the tablet and smartphone.”

The news comes a matter of weeks after it was revealed that Clash of Clans and Hay Day were bringing in a total of $500,000 in revenue a day before Apple’s cut, with some suggesting the

developer could soon be valued at $600 million as a result.(source:pocketgamer)http://www.pocketgamer.biz/r/PG.Biz/Supercell+news/news.asp?c=47480

2)Google Play closing gap on App Store

by Daniel Gumble

Android store gaining on iOS counterpart.

The gap between Google Play and the App Store appears to be closing, with the Android store showing an aggregated daily revenue growth of 43 per cent between August and November, trouncing

that of its iOS counterpart, who registered 21 per cent growth.

While the growth figures certainly indicate that Android is hot on the heels of its iOS rival, there is still a significant distance between the two. On an average day in November, App Store revenue topped $15 million, as opposed to just $3.5 million for Google Play.

In terms of market revenue, the US sits atop the pile, followed by Japan, the UK and Australia, while the fastest growing markets for the iPhone are Japan (up 138 per cent), China (118 per cent) and Russia (96 per cent), while Android saw strong gains in Korea (94 per cent), Japan (60 per cent) and France (46 per cent).(source:mobile-ent

3)Look out: Scam app FarCry Black appears on the App Store for £1.99 / $2.99

by Anthony Usher

A mysterious developer called N Rad has just released a £1.99 / $2.99 iPhone application called FarCry Black.

No, this isn’t a mobile port of Ubisoft’s excellent console shoot-’em-up. It isn’t some sort of companion app either.

It’s actually one of those bloody scam apps.

According to its App Store description, FarCry Black is “an open world first-person shooter” that allows you to explore “a beautiful and diverse island playground”.

You can apparently traverse “lost Japanese bunkers, ancient temples, and secluded caves”, and make use of a fully-fledged “crafting system”.

See that screenshot above? That’s what FarCry Black is supposed to look like, according to the iTunes description.

And that screenshot above? That’s what N Rad’s game actually looks like. It’s a strange side-scrolling platformer that’s riddled with hideous controls and pretty mediocre graphics.

I managed to play it for about 30 seconds before my eyes melted out of my skull.

So, let that be a public service announcement: don’t spend any cash on this scam. How it got past Apple is anyone’s guess?

If you’ve already been duped by the promise of a stunning-looking shooter, you should request a refund from Apple. If you don’t know how to do that, check out our newly published guide.(source:pocketgamer

4)Apple Reaches Highest-Ever U.S. Smartphone Sales Share At 53.3%; Android Consolidates In Europe

Ingrid Lunden

Apple’s shares, as you may have seen, have been sliding in the market on the back of strong competition from Android device makers. Today, some new figures on recent smartphone sales will give investors both encouraging and discouraging food for thought on that matter as we dive into the final weekend of sales before Christmas.

According to 12-week sales numbers out from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech — the WPP division that tracks smartphone sales across several key markets on a monthly, rolling basis — Apple is at its highest-ever share of smartphone sales in the U.S., at over 53%. But the question remains whether that is strong enough to offset the fact that Android is increasingly gaining prominence everywhere else. In Europe, Android is at its highest-ever share of sales, at 61%, with Samsung leading the charge; and it is also in the lead in the other key markets that Kantar assesses: Australia, China and Brazil.

Meanwhile, Windows Phone is continuing to gain some momentum. The platform has now surpassed RIM in the U.S. market as the third-most-popular platform, but it’s still miles behind the top two by quite a long way.

The researchers note that in the last 12 weeks ending November 25, Apple’s iPhone range accounted for 53.3% of all smartphone purchases, a rise of more than five percentage points on last month’s 48.1%. As was the case last month, a lot of the momentum is coming from sales of the iPhone 5, Apple’s latest addition to its smartphone line, introduced in September.

Apple’s gain in the U.S. was a mixture of taking share from Android and RIM: Android is at 41.9% but that’s a drop of some 10 percentage points over the same period last year. RIM meanwhile lost nearly 6 percentage points and has now dropped down to fourth, with Windows Phone now in third place with just over 7% of all purchases in the last 12 weeks.

The picture, however, is not as rosy for the iPhone in Europe. Overall, Android is now at its highest-ever percentage of sales, with the various OEMs that make phones based on Google’s platform now accounting for 61% of all smartphone sales in Europe’s top five mobile markets. Apple, in contrast, is at just over 25%.

That charge continues to be led by Samsung. The Korean handset maker’s Galaxy line of devices accounted for 44% of all smartphone sales across the European big-five of the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain — meaning that, even comparing brand-to-brand, it’s doing better than Apple. Given that Apple has not really made any forays into targeting the cheaper end of the smartphone market — notwithstanding the fact that it continues to sell older models of the iPhone — as economic pressures continue to weigh on consumers in Europe, this trend is likely to continue.

And developing markets are likely to follow suit, too. In the two that Kantar tracks — Brazil and China — Android phones respectively accounted for 60.7% and 72.2% of all sales in the last 12 weeks.

Windows Phone and its main licensee Nokia, meanwhile, continue to see gains — albeit still on a modest scale that is not able to break the hegemony of Apple and Android.

In the U.S., as we noted above, it’s now passed RIM as the third-most-popular platform for smartphone buyers. In the UK, it’s still at number-four after Android, Apple, and RIM. But if RIM continues to drop fast — its sales fell by more than 10 percentage points over the last year in the UK — Windows Phone will overtake RIM by next month in the UK.(source:techcrunch
