1)Tokyo-Based Mobile Game Maker Colopl Goes IPO, Boasts US$480 Million In Market Cap

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Tokyo-based mobile game maker Colopl got listed at the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Thursday and saw its share price soar 88% from 3,000 to 5,650 yen on the first day (ticker: 3668).

The listing was announced last month.

And it is a pretty big one: Colopl is boasting a 40 billion yen (US$480 million) market cap currently. The company even reached 44.5 billion yen (US$533 million) on the first trading day.

In other words, Colopl is Japan’s biggest listed social game provider (not counting platform owners DeNA and GREE) by market cap today: bigger than companies such as Voltage, KLab, Ateam, enish (which went IPO a few days ago), etc.

Expect a number of mobile game makers to follow Colopl and enish next year.(source:serkantoto

2)Zynga’s PetVille will say goodbye to Facebook on December 30

by Brandy Shaul

Apparently, even a game with 1.1 million monthly players isn’t safe from Zynga’s chopping block, as the developer has announced that PetVille will be the next game to close on December 30.

The disappointing news comes from the game’s official Facebook fan page, which thanks players for being long-time supporters.

As with other recent Zynga game closures, players are being encouraged to login to PetVille at least one last time to claim their free “complimentary bonus package” in another Zynga game from the following list: CastleVille, ChefVille, FarmVille 2, Mafia Wars, or YoVille. This is a one-time bonus for PetVille players, and it must be claimed before December 30 when the game officially closes.

Here’s the full statement from Zynga. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to spend some final quality time with my virtual pet.

“Greetings PetVille players,

Thank you for supporting PetVille and for being a loyal player! We’re sorry to inform you that PetVille will be shutting down on Dec 30, 2012. In place of PetVille, we encourage you to play other Zynga games like Castleville, Chefville, Farmville 2, Mafia Wars and Yoville.

We appreciate your participation in PetVille as it helped make the game a fun place to meet and war with friends. As a loyal PetVille player, you are eligible for a one-time, complimentary bonus package in one of either Castleville, or Chefville, or Farmville 2, or Mafia Wars or Yoville. You can start the process by logging into PetVilleand clicking on the “Redeem” button.

Please note that this offer will be valid only until Dec 30, 2012.

Thank you for your time in PetVille. We look forward to seeing you again in other Zynga games.”(source:games

3)Rumor: iPad Mini is going retina

John Koetsier

The iPad Mini may be a marvel of miniaturization and the best small tablet on the market, but it lacks a high-quality retina display, and it’s not exactly cheap.

It looks like at least one of those issues could be resolved soon.

According to Taiwan-based Digitimes — which has a bit of a spotty record with rumors — Apple is sourcing new screens for the newest, lightest, and smallest member of Apple’s iPad lineup.

Those new screens are most likely retina displays with 2,058 by 1,536 pixels, for a 326 pixel-per-inch density.

That compares to the current model’s 1,024 x 768 pixels and 163 pixel-per-inch density, and it would address the popular device’s most common complaint. Apparently, iPad Mini is outselling the iPad 4 and may account for half of all of Apple’s iPad sales in 2012 — up to 50 million units.

On the one hand, the retina rumor is a gimme: Obviously, Apple is going to put a better screen on the iPad Mini at some point. The question is when.

iPad refresh schedules were generally about a year in length — until the unexpected October release of an updated iPad 3. So will the mini be updated in six months, which puts a new version in the April/May time frame, or in 12 months, at another October-ish event?

My guess is six months, as the tablet market is moving fast, and more competitors are nipping at Apple’s heels. This rumor adds fuel to that fire.(source:venturebeat

4)SOE’s President doesn’t like Facebook games — Sony Online Entertainment Jon Smedley revealed that he’s not the biggest fan of Facebook games. Speaking GamesIndustry.biz, he said, “I gotta tell you, I’m not a fan of the Facebook game. To me, they’re monetization vehicles and not the kind of games I want to play or make. That’s just me personally. So we’ll stick to what we do best.”(source:insidesocialgames

5)Facebook Android app is “faster than ever”

by Zen Terrelonge

Better fasten your seatbelt when browsing photos and cruising through your Timeline.

Back in August, a report claimed Facebook was forcing its employees to trade in their iPhones for Android to improve the experience for users accessing from Google OS-powered devices.

A few months later and the social network says “Facebook for Android is faster than ever,” with version 2.0 twice as fast when users are stalking friends’ photos of wild nights out and opening their Timelines.

Facebook, said: “When you’re on your phone, nothing matters more than getting what you want quickly. We’re always working to make our apps faster, and in this update we’ve rebuilt news feed, notifications and Timeline for speed.”(source:mobile-ent
