1)Women 21 per cent less likely to own a mobile in developing world

by Daniel Gumble

GSMA mWomen Design Challenge launched to make smartphone use more intuitive for women in developing countries.

While mobile phone use amongst men in the developing world is currently booming, the same, however, cannot be said for women. GSMA research shows that as many as 300 million women in these parts of the world are denied access to a mobile, meaning that they are 21 per cent less like to own a mobile phone than men.

So, in order to redress the balance, Maura O’Neill, Chief Innovation Officer and Senior Counselor, US Agency for International Development; Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel Group; Jenny Da Rin, Assistant Director General, Australian Agency for International Development; and Chris Locke, Fund Managing Director, GSMA Development, have announced the launch of the GSMA mWomen Design Challenge: Redefining the User Experience at this year’s Social Good Summit in New York.

The aim of the GSMA mWomen Design Challenge is to work with the global digital design community in order to find new ways of making the smartphone user experience more intuitive. And for women in developing countries who may struggle with technical literacy due to a lack of hands-on experience with smartphones, this could be hugely beneficial.

Commenting on the significant disparity of smartphone use between men and women in the world’s low-to-middle income countries, Da Rin said: “In East Asia and the Pacific, there is a significant gap between women and men’s access to mobile phones. A mobile phone could change the life of a woman in a developing country in a quantum leap – immediate contact with a health centre that would otherwise be days of travel away; instant information about food prices and markets; mobile banking – all at the touch of a button.”

Among the key reasons behind such disparity in the world’s low-to-middle income countries are the overall cost of mobile ownership and a limited understanding of the potential of mobile devices, not to mention the various cultural barriers many women face in terms of gaining access to smartphones.(source:mobile-ent

2)China Mobile aims to sell 100m phones in 2013

by Zen Terrelonge

Smartphones to account for 80 per cent of sales.

Chinese operator China Mobile has announced a dream goal of selling 100m mobile phones next year, according to the Shanghai Daily, with the result rising 25 per cent rise on 2012 sales.

The network plans to achieve its goal with exclusive regional designs from Motorola and Nokia, who will make more than 60 per cent of handsets, while China Mobile’s Ma Jingxin said smartphones will account for 80 per cent of sales.

The head of the mobile end division, said: “Smartphone sales will be a major catalyst for our sales as demand of mobile phone replacement surges.”(source:mobile-ent

3)iPad tops game consoles on kids’ wish lists for third straight year

By Frank Cifaldi

The children have spoken, and they want iPads.

Apple’s popular tablet tops the lists of devices that American kids 6-12 years old are hoping to get soon for the third straight year in Nielsen’s annual survey, where it continues being more coveted than dedicated game consoles.

At 48 percent, nearly half of the children surveyed said they were hoping to get an iPad in the next six months, which is actually up 4 percent from last year.

Nintendo’s Wii U, which kids have been recently exposed to thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign, placed second at 39 percent. It is the first dedicated game device to crack the top five since 2010.(source:gamasutra

4)Activision sells an iPhone game in stores for $50

By Mike Rose

As Activision expands its popular Skylanders franchise more fully onto mobile devices this week, the company has applied a physical-digital hybrid model to Skylanders: Battlegrounds.

The iOS game sells at retail for $49.99, where it comes with a Portal of Power wireless device, three Skylanders toys and a redemption code to download the game from the App Store.

The game will also be available from tomorrow directly from the App Store as a standalone app.

The game launches this week as part of Activision’s rolling out of its own mobile social game network called Activate, aimed at providing online features and services in its mobile games, such as cloud storage for Skylanders toys and save games. (source:gamasutra

5)Two years later, Scrubs lives on in your iPhone or iPad for $2.99

by Joe Osborne

And, of course, it’s a hidden-object game. Developer HeroCraft has finally made good on the Scrubs license provided by Disney, a while back. As one would expect, Srubs for iOS includes all of the characters from the series in a new storyline that sets you as an intern at Sacred Heart hospital.

The hidden-object gameplay comes in when it’s up to you to help solve a mystery that will save the hospital’s reputation. And what better way to solve a mystery in a video game than to find hidden-objects and play mini games? Yeah, that’s the best we can come up with on short notice. If you still care about Scrubs two years after it was cancelled, then check the trailer below and fork up the three bucks.(source:games

6)INFOGRAPHIC: 90 per cent of 18-29 year-olds sleep with their phones

by Zen Terrelonge

Forget the love of a good woman, I’d rather snuggle up to a curvaceous Galaxy S III.

The OnlinePsychologyDegree has delved into the minds of mobile device users to find that usage doesn’t decline at bedtime, but rather the opposite as one in three users would rather give up sex than their phone.

With that in mind, 95 per cent of people say they watch TV, text, and browse the web in the hour before they hit the sack, while 90 per cent of 18-29 year-olds sleep with their phone in or right next to their bed.

What’s more, 25 per cent of people don’t silence their mobiles before bed, so it’s probably unsurprising that one in ten say they’re disturbed from their slumbers a few times a week by calls, texts and emails.(source:mobile-ent
