1)You have until December 14 to get OpenFeint out of your game

By Frank Cifaldi

Heads up to those of you who have games with OpenFeint support: bad things could happen if you don’t get rid of it by December 14.

OpenFeint’s new owner Gree said Friday that it will shut down OpenFeint’s servers for good on or about that day, as it finalizes its phasing out of OpenFeint in favor of its Gree Platform.

Any network calls OpenFeint makes in a game will of course be nonfunctional, which Gree says “may result in service disruptions to your game and a poor player experience.” Additionally, all data stored on OpenFeint will be gone for good.

The company says that transferring from OpenFeint to Gree is a relatively painless process, though basic integration “can take less than a week,” so you might want to get moving.(source:gamasutra

2)78 per cent of UK smartphone data delivered via Wi-Fi

by Daniel Gumble

Only 22 per cent delivered through 3G.

Over three quarters of smartphone data in the UK – a whopping 78 per cent – is transferred via Wi-Fi, as opposed to just 22 per cent delivered through 3G, global information and insights firm Nielsen has reported.

The research also shows that the average UK Android smartphone owner conducts most of their mobile data ‘offloading’ via Wi-Fi after 5pm, peaking between 11pm and midnight when 90 per cent commence transference. 3G data, however, tends to peak just before the working day begins, again at lunchtime and finally during early evening, when users are unable to rely on a Wi-Fi connection.

Meanwhile, the research reveals that 3G mobile data usage drops by more than 55 per cent between 6pm and midnight, but when factoring in Wi-Fi, it actually increases by almost 30 per cent.

David Gosen, managing director for digital, Nielsen European, explained: “Wi-Fi is on average three-and-a-half times more dominant than 3G when it comes to delivering mobile internet data services. It peaks around midnight as users gravitate towards social networks, driven by their desire to stay connected through all waking hours.

“Previously, the main insight into the volume of mobile traffic came from the networks’ own records,” he continued. “Now, with Nielsen Smartphone Analytics we can complete the whole consumer picture.

“The implications for all stakeholders in the industry are enormous in terms of being able to show the total level of demand for mobile data, the drivers of that usage, and how it varies by operator and application type.”(source:mobile-ent

3)King.com ports match-3 Facebook sensation Candy Crush Saga over to iOS

by Jeremy Thackray

If your game is pulling in more than 5 million daily players on Facebook, it’s probably a fairly safe business bet to develop and release a version for iPhone and iPad.

King.com certainly thinks so, for after porting Facebook smash Bubble Witch Saga to iOS in the summer, the casual / social games specialist has just repeated the trick with Candy Crush Saga.

Before you ask, this madly popular Facebook match-three puzzler is a free-to-play experience on iOS, with boosters and charms available via in-app purchases.

As with Bubble Witch Saga, this iOS version of Candy Crush Saga will seamlessly sync with its Facebook counterpart, so you can continue your Facebook session on your iPad and vice versa.

With over 100 levels, leaderboards for competitive types, and more colour than you can shake a stick of rock at, Candy Crush Saga isn’t short of content. What’s more, it’s available now for none of your precious pennies.(source:pocketgamer

4)Glu culls staff across US, closes Sao Paulo office

by Keith Andrew

Following on from less than stellar financial results in Q3, it’s being reported publisher Glu has moved to cut staff in two offices in the US and close down another altogether.

The cuts – broken by GeekWire – will see 25 percent of staff in Glu’s office in Kirkland, Washington lose their jobs, while a further 5 percent of the workforce will be trimmed from the firm’s base in San Francisco.

Difficult times

Furthermore, Glu’s office Sao Paulo is to closed down completely, with Glu’s president of studios expected to be moved to take charge of the firm’s Kirkland office.

Glu recently posted a loss of $4.2 million in its most recent quarter – that was despite a 12 percent year-on-year rise in sales to $21.3 million.

Indeed, the quarterly loss actually represented an improvement on the $7.3 million Glu lost during the same period in 2011.

Glu CFO Eric R. Ludwig has already suggested that the company is unlikely to enjoy a turnaround in Q4 2012, with a “combination of underperforming titles” and “Apple’s prohibition of incentivised advertising for external HTML5 sites” hitting the firm’s fortunes.

It’s claimed Apple’s alleged action against incentivisation networks such as Tapjoy could cost Glu around $7 million a year.(source:pocketgamer
