Strategy Analytics

1)Android tablet shipments double as iPad growth slows

By Eric Caoili

Declining iPad shipments allowed Android tablets to grab more market share than ever in the last three months, as shipments for Android devices more than doubled to 10.2 million units, according to a new study.

Apple disclosed on Thursday that global iPad shipments reached 14 million during its fourth quarter, up from 11 million units in the previous quarter last year — while shipments increased, that 25.9 percent rise is much smaller than the previous year’s 166 percent jump, and those numbers are far below the 15.55 million units analysts expected.

Research firm Strategy Analytics reports that worldwide Android tablet shipment numbers still trailed behind iPad’s in the last three months, but estimates that they doubled from 5 million during the same period last year to now 10.2 million. And Android’s market share grew from 29.2 percent to 41.3 percent (while Apple’s fell from 64.5 percent to 56.7 percent).

No single Android vendor (e.g. Samsung) came anywhere close to matching Apple’s volume of shipments, but the contributions from dozens of Google partners are helping Android tablets catch up. Android-based devices have also dominated the 7-inch mini-tablet space with Asus’ Nexus 7 (pictured) and Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

But Apple is heading into the holidays with its own 7.9-inch tablet, the newly announced iPad Mini, and many game developers tell Gamasutra that the device is likely to dramatically increase Apple’s tablet market share. While it’s the cheapest iPad Apple’s ever sold at $329, it’s still significantly more expensive than its rivals.

Microsoft has also just launched the Surface, its own tablet based on the Windows RT operating system (a version using Windows 8 will release in January). Prior to the Surface, the market share for Windows-based tablets dropped from 2.3 percent last year to now 1.6 percent — shipments remained at around 400,000.

Strategy Analytics’ “Global Tablet OS Market Share: Q3 2012″ report found that year-over-year total growth for the global tablet market also fell from 288.6 percent in Q3 2011 (17.2 million tablet shipments total) to 43.4 percent in Q3 2012 (24.7 million tablet shipments total). (source:gamasutra

2)Eurozone App Store users hit as Apple raises prices by 13%

by Jon Jordan

During its App Store maintenance takedown, it seems Apple has been doing more than just preparing for iPad mini.

As pointed out by TheNextWeb, it’s also tweaked the standard app prices for all countries in the Eurozone.

There’s been no official announcement yet, but similar to what happened when UK prices were changed in 2011 – when the standard 99c pricepoint was raised to 69p from 59p – the previous €0.79 standard price is now €0.89.

Structural weakness

The reason will be the changing dollar vs. Euro exchange rate.

18 months ago, €0.79 was ‘worth’ $1.15 (using commercial exchange rates; Apple no doubt has its own system for working out such conversions).

But since the Eurozone countries have been dealing with their various debt issues, the value of the Euro has been falling steadily against the dollar.

Before today’s changes, €0.79 was nominally worth $1.03. Conversely, €0.89 is worth $1.16, back to the value Apple was getting 18 months ago.

Of course, it’s not just the lowest level of prices that’s changes, it’s the entire set.

For example, the $1.99 price point – previously €1.59 – moves to €1.79, while $2.99 – previously €2.39 – becomes €2.69.(source:pocketgamer

3)New CEO for Ngmoco as founders move on

By Mike Rose

Neil Young and Bob Stevenson, two of the original founders of mobile games company Ngmoco, have left the company to move on to other opportunities.

Ngmoco was founded in 2008, and is best known for the Rolando puzzle-adventure series. In 2010, the company was bought out by Japanese social games giant DeNA for $400 million.

Clive Downie (pictured), previously head of studios for the company, has now taken up the CEO role in place of Young. Young said that he will remain on the DeNA board of directors.

Prior to this CEO role and his work at Ngmoco, Downie served as vice president of marketing at Electronic Arts, and held management positions at toy company Mattel.

Isao Moriyasu, CEO at parent company DeNA, noted that Downie will now be tasked with driving the Mobage social gaming platform in the West.

As for Young and Stevenson, they are said to be supporting the executive transition, although neither has explained exactly what they are doing next, apart from “moving on to our next adventure.” (source:gamasutra

4)Whale Trail devs reveal game is making £250 a day — UK developer ustwo’s quirky indie title Whale Trail has been downloaded more than 1 million times and is making £250 ($402) a day reports The AppSide. That’s roughly $12,000 a month — not a chart topping amount, but nothing to sniff at either.(source:insidemobileapps

5)Tequila Mobile doubles audience as its Android-centric gaming platform hits 20 million users

by Jon Jordan

We’re often GREE-this, Mobage-that, and Zynga-the-other.

Sure, those are the big billion dollar companies but there are also plenty of fast-growing niche players when it comes to social gaming networks.

One such is Polish outfit Tequila, which has just announced that its Tequila Planet mobile platform has reached 20 million unique users.

This is up from 10 million users in May 2012.

Supporting Android, iOS and Java games, its audience is split roughly 30 percent Europe, 30 percent Asia and 18 percent South America (with the remaining quarter spread elsewhere).

Significantly, it’s not yet actively expanded into the lucrative North America market.

Friends together

Tequila’s EVP Lukasz Deszczulka explained the platform’s mainly organic growth had occurred as its integrates with thirdparty app stores, OEM stores and number of mobile portals.

“We acquire traffic from our partners and then share in-app revenue with our affiliates and game developers,” he said.

“We can do this effectively because we operate our own, operator-based in-app billing infrastructure and we have a unique user and partner tracking capability.”

Tequila’s billing system supports 400 operators in more than 80 countries.

Cash converters

In terms of additional metrics, Tequila says that its platform has hosted over 200 million total gaming sessions and around 18 million hours of play time.

More than 1.4 million users have converted into paying users – that’s a 7 percent conversion rate – with over $2 million generated via 2.3 million purchase transactions.

6)Rockstar Games to release Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on iOS and Android

Scott Reyburn

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 10th anniversaryRockstar Games today announced the upcoming launch of ‘80s themed Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on iOS and Android in celebration of the game’s 10th anniversary.

First released in Oct. 2002 for PlayStation 2, GTA: Vice City is an open-world action adventurer developed by Edinburgh, Scotland-based game studio, Rockstar North. The updated mobile version of Vice City will feature native high-resolution graphics and multiple enchainments to cater to the mobile platforms.

Rockstar Games previously gave Grand Theft Auto 3 the same treatment for its 10th anniversary with iOS and Android releases. The iOS version saw early success, ranking as the No.2 paid app for iPhone and the No. 1 paid app for iPad. According to traffic tracking service AppData, Grand Theft Auto 3 is currently ranked No. 56 in the top iPad apps games genre on iOS.

Aside from the Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar Games brought its Max Payne franchise to mobile with Max Payne Mobile, which released back in April on iOS and June on Android. The title is a port of the original title for PC and consoles and ranked No. 1 on the top grossing iOS app charts for two weeks after its release.

GTA Vice City will hit the App Store and Google Play later this fall.(source:insidemobileapps
