Disney dials Indian telecos for 3G content, mobile games

Disney Interactive Media Group, the online entertainment content creation division of Dow Jones-listed The Walt Disney Co, is in talks with telecom operators in India to scale up its mobile content business, including gaming, using the 3G platform.

“We are in discussion with almost all leading operators for giving value-added content…I can’t disclose the details yet,” Nitin Chawla, executive director, Disney Interactive Media Group, the Walt Disney Co (India) Pvt Ltd, told NewsWire18 today.

The company is in talks to offer value-added content such as short form video content, which is less than eight minutes, long form video content, movies and mobile games.

“We have hundreds of clips of Disney animation and ABC content such as the television series ‘Lost’ available with us…so video is a big opportunity, and we are also looking at (mobile) gaming,”Chawla said.

The company offers more than 150 mobile games, including six locally produced ones on the Java BREW platform. These include Aladdin, Jungle Book, and Disney Cricket to name a few.

Chawla declined to share any financial details like the number of mobile customers it has and is targeting, or the planned investment.

Indian telecom operators that won 3G spectrum were allotted the spectrum on Sep 1. Operators have said they will be ready to launch 3G services within three to four months of getting the spectrum.

Currently, value-added services contribute around 10-14% of a telecom operator’s wireless revenue, of which short messaging services make up 4-5%.

Companies expect their VAS revenue to increase to as much as 20-30% in the next four to five years, enabled largely by the launch of 3G services.

Currently, only state-owned companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd offer 3G services in the country.(source:telecomyatra)
