SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)-Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) has hired a top videogame specialist from Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), a move that suggests the Internet retailer may be gearing up for a push into the online gaming market.

Andre Vrignaud, Microsoft’s director of game platform strategy, said on his blog that he couldn’t provide details about his new role at Amazon but said he was “very intrigued about what Amazon is looking to do.” The posting was published on last week.

A 20-year veteran of the game industry, Vrignaud joined Microsoft in 2002 and helped transform the software maker into a leading player in gaming. He oversaw the game platform strategy for Xbox, Xbox Live and Windows. Recently, he had focused on mobile gaming.

Amazon, which grew to prominence selling books, CDs and DVDs over the Internet, has been under increasing pressure to bolster its line up of digital media products to ward off rivals, including Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Google Inc. (GOOG), as consumers increasingly shift to electronic books, digital music and online videos.

Vrignaud’s hiring is the strongest suggestion to date that Amazon may build an online platform to attract game aficionados, much in the way the company’s popular Kindle electronic book reader has help spur the electronic book sales.

Earlier this year, tech blog Engadget discovered that Amazon had posted a job opening for a “stealth project” in its digital video game business. The company currently has several game job postings, including a senior product manager opening that refers to “a new initiative in our digital video games business.” The job posting says the project involves “inventing and building a new type of technology for customers.”
