1)Nokia Store generates 11m downloads per day

by Zen Terrelonge

177 developers join the hallowed 1m club.

While Nokia has been struggling to do battle against the likes of Apple and Android devices in developed markets, it’s Symbian OS has continued a stronghold over emerging markets.

The Finnish manufacturer has released a number of stats and trends. One of which shows that its Nokia Store is now receiving 11 million app and content downloads per day.

This has enabled 177 developers to bag one million downloads apiece as the top markets in 2011 were India, China, Russia, Brazil and Turkey.

India itself favoured games and downloaded more content than the rest of the top five combined, which opted for general apps.

Of the 154 supported Nokia devices, the top five for downloads were the N8-00, the 5800 XPRESSMUSIC, the 5233, the 5230 and the C3-00.

The top five apps globally were dominated by ones that enable communications with Facebook Chat, eBuddy Messenger Free, WhatsApp Messenger, High Speed 3D Free, Skype. This, proves the continued popularity of social networks and instant messaging.

Presumably, Nokia will be hoping developers sit up and take note of the figures, which show that Symbian hasn’t been as deserted as many may have thought.

All the same, the firm will be hoping to achieve success with the Windows Phone OS that will power new devices such as the Lumia series.(source:mobile-ent

2)The iPad is the number one gadget for playing Angry Birds, fans say

by Joe Osborne

You would figure the place where gamers could get their Angry Birds fix on the cheap would be most ideal, but nay. It looks like players just can’t get enough of that extra screen space.

According to a poll Rovio held for its 11.7 million Facebook fans, the most ideal device for playing Angry Birds is the iPad. Over 11,000 fans responded to the divisive question.

While we don’t know exactly how many fans chose which device, 11,352 responses is quite the sample size. Following Apple’s oh-so-expensive tablet were, surprisingly, Android phones.

Finishing out the top five gizmo’s to play Rovio’s beloved bird-flinger on were the iPhone, followed by the iPod Touch and the Kindle Fire.

Considering Angry Birds HD for the iPad costs $4.99, compared to a mere $.99 for the iPhone, one has to imagine that the major draw of the iPad experience is the expanded screen space.

That said, it’s surprising more tablets didn’t make the list, but equally impressive that the Kindle Fire, which has been on the market for less than two months, managed to place. (source:games

3)Angry Birds merch flies into Russia and CIS as Rovio signs distribution deal

by Matt Sakuraoka-Gilman

Finnish purveyor of Angry Birds Rovio has announced the next step in its bid for world wide merchandising dominance, revealing details of its collaboration with Russia and CIS-based online retail outfit Internet Retail Solution (IRSOL).

IRSOL maintain control over a variety of online retail fronts, of which Bambiniya.ru, a child-focused online store, is already stocking Angry Birds’ merchandise, with offline retail apparently on the way.

New ground

“Angry Birds is extremely popular both globally and in Russia as it brings positive emotions and fun to the entire family,” said IRSOL’s CEO Alexander Semenov.

“Our philosophy – to endeavor to make our customers happy with every small detail – is similar to that of Rovio, so we are especially excited to represent Angry Birds.”

He’s not the only person pleased by the deal, as Claes Kalborg, Rovio’s senior VP of licensing highlighted the significance of entering the Russian market.

“We have been looking for a partner in Russia for several months,” he said.

“This is a very important market for us as it already has the largest internet audience in Europe.

“IRSOL is a dynamic company with a strong team, focused on online retail and distribution in various product categories, experienced in dealing with licensed merchandise, and has both B2B and B2C expertise.”(source:pocketgamer

4)Atari (developers) gets busy, churn out mobile games monthly in 2012

by Joe Osborne

Did you dig Asteroids Gunner? How about that Breakout Boost joint? If the answer is “Yes diddly doodly!” then you’re in luck. Speaking with Inside Mobile Apps (IMA), Atari reiterated that its focus on mobile games will continue throughout 2012. So much so, in fact, that the developer-turned-publisher expects to release at least one game a month this year … at least.

The lot of those games will be based on the publishers breadth of recognizable properties (you know, like Asteroids?), but the storied publisher admits that even those can’t last forever.

“We have a great portfolio, but it’s only so big and only certain titles will translate well to the mobile platform and we’re very well aware of that,” Atari VP of mobile games Maria Pacheco told IMA. “Our intention is definitely to begin introducing original IP.”

Just how does Atari plan to put out at least 12 games this year? It’s a publisher now, dummy. Atari will just hire developers to create games based on its hit franchises, which so far has been a hit and miss approach, if you ask this writer. Regardless, Atari’s efforts seem to be working swimmingly: Breakout Boost has been downloaded 2 million times since its December launch. The publisher will reveal more in “the next few weeks about working with developers who have been passionate about Atari brands.”(source:games

5)Apple may go the iPhone 4S route with new iPad 3, says report

Tom Cheredar

It’s time for yet another installment of unconfirmed Apple iPad 3 news — although the latest crop of rumors does sound like a practical scenario for the company’s next tablet.

In terms of aesthetics, the next iPad may look nearly identical to the current model and could feature the same home screen button and dock connector, according to a report from Japanese blog Macotakara. The only significant difference to the appearance would be the tablet’s slightly thicker body. If true, this means some iPad 2 body cases will probably be incompatible.

The report also indicates that the majority of changes in the iPad 3 are significant upgrades to hardware components inside, such as a faster A6 processor, better front and rear cameras and an enhanced 2048-by-1536-pixel resolution screen produced by Sharp. This move would mimic Apple’s decision to release an interim iPhone 4S with component upgrades rather than a fully redesigned iPhone 5.(source:venturebeat

6)Eric Schmidt: Android Is Differentiated, Not Fragmented

Chris Velazco

We’ve spent the better part of yesterday cruising around the Central Hall on a quest to highlight the coolest tech at CES, but Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt was on hand at CNET’s Next Big Thing panel to talk about the future of consumer electronics. While doing so, he (perhaps unsurprisingly) made it clear that he isn’t a fan of the word “fragmentation” when it comes to Google’s Android OS.

“You have to be careful with that word,” he cautioned. He actually prefers to use the term “differentiation” to describe the situation, as his definition of fragmentation is when certain apps are able to run on one particular flavor of Android and not other. “What people really care about is if there’s an interoperable ecosystem of apps.”

In Schmidt’s eyes, differentiation is a means for Android-using partners to woo customers with their own take on a common platform. As long as every Android customer is able to use the same apps, he doesn’t see much of a problem.

“Differentiation means that you have a choice and the people who are making the phones, they’re going to compete on their view of innovation, and they’re going to try and convince you that theirs is better than somebody else,” Schmidt said.

A quick look at the breakdown of Android versions currently in use shows that certain versions have settled into common use, but the sheer number of manufacturers working with Android means that the timing for new software updates can be dramatically different from company to company.

The highly customized nature of some manufacturer-specific Android builds also means that device-specific maintenance and support updates can take extra time to implement, which leads to an Android landscape where some companies pull ahead and others lag when it comes to customer experience. Is that necessarily fair to every customer? Not really, but it seems we’ll all just have to deal with it for the foreseeable future.(source:techcrunch

7)Stream Media launches free Android game discovery platform Applorer

by Matt Sakuraoka-Gilman

Discoverability is cited as one of the main challenges developers face when pushing content through iOS, and with the Android Market growing fast, the problem is becoming ever more prevalent.

Applorer is a new app discovery platform that’s been launched on the Android Market to help developers get their apps seen and to help gamers get their fingers on significant new content.

Based around recommendation of free games, it also has its own currency and supports various payment schemes to push paid content.

In order to hook into this, users have to register, unlocking an addition service labelled as Applorer Gamebox.

Show me the money

Stream Media is the Singapore-based new media firm behind the app, which is powered by a group of games testers tasked with finding the best content.

It lists EA Mobile as one of its partners, and ran a pre-Christmas competition for Plants vs Zombies figures and other branded items.

“Our system finds the newest additions to Android Market and our editors test out all the games daily before selecting it to be featured on Applorer Gamebox,” Stream Media’s explains.

“New games are added everyday so that users can always find something they have not played before.”

The app features a MoVend in-app purchasing scheme (also part of Stream Media), meaning that you can buy premium content via methods such as PayPal, MOLPoints and Cherry Credits, with SMS Billing and Google Checkout compatibility expected soon.

For more information on Applorer, or to submit your app for reviewing, visit the Applorer website or via the Android Market [link].(source:pocketgamer
