1)Zynga meets an IPO challenger, MapleStory maker to raise $1.2 billion

by Joe Osborne

It looks like Japan is about to get its own Zynga. MapleStory Adventures maker Nexon has adjusted the price for its upcoming initial public offering (IPO) from $1.3 billion to $1.2 billion, likely in response to Zynga’s recent adjustment. The San Francisco-based FarmVille creator recently upped its asking price to $1.15 billion, but brought down its expected valuation to $7 billion at most.

Nexon plans to sell half of its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and half overseas, because of its huge presence in the US and abroad, at 1,300 yen, or $16.60 USD starting Dec. 14. “There are not that many Japanese companies with overseas growth stories. That makes it attractive,” Stats Investment Management chief investment officer Toru Hashizume told Reuters.

This pricing will give Nexon a valuation, the projected total worth of a company based on several factors, of 560 billion yen, or $7.1 billion USD. And what do you know, that’s worth just as much as Zynga expects out of its IPO. And rightfully so, Nexon is credited with popularizing the free-to-play game model in the US with games like MapleStory for PC. And now, the company enjoys success on Facebook, thanks to MapleStory Adventures and recently Zombie Misfits.

Zynga begins to make the rounds in its IPO roadshow this week. The question is, however, will investors be more interested in a company that’s made as much in less than half the time as Nexon (it’s been around since 1994), or a pioneer with a far longer track record of success? Ready … Fight!(source:games

2)GREE Partner gumi Raises US$26 Million

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Tokyo-based social game maker gumi announced it has raised a whopping two billion yen (US$25.7) from a total of six investors today. The fresh money comes from JAFCO, DBJ Capital, Shinsei Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, and Tecmo Koei.

Gumi says they have now reached a US$154 million post-money valuation – not bad for a 3.5-year old startup in Japan. The company generated US$7.7 million in virtual item sales last month, and expects even more after hitting US$1.3 million on a single day (December 2) for this month, according to TechCrunch Japan.

Almost of all of gumi’s titles are exclusively available on GREE. One of gumi’s latest hits is FIFA World Class Soccer, a social soccer game just launched on GREE that has been co-developed with EA.(source:serkantoto

3)Chocobot Games: RockYou Asia Renames Itself, Reduces Capital

by Dr. Serkan Toto

RockYou Asia won’t be called Rockyou Asia anymore: according to a report on Japanese news site Social Game Info, the US company renamed its Tokyo subsidiary to “Chocobot Games” (or “Choco Bot Games”, there is no English transcript yet).

I have no idea why RockYou Asia would do that, but the name change isn’t the only thing: it looks like the the company also reduced its capital.

RockYou Asia isn’t mentioning or confirming any of this at this point, neither on its Japanese nor English corporate website – maybe they will deliver details later.

The company recently shut down four games on Mixi, but it’s also active on Mobage and GREE.(source:serkantoto

4)Gree Lifts Veil On New Social Gaming Platform

by Eric Caoili

When Japanese mobile social game developer and network operator GREE releases its new platform in the second quarter of 2012, it will feature a “fully borderless system” and new developer tools.

Offering the first details on the upcoming mobile social gaming platform, Gree says the borderless system will feature a “single sign-on for users, a global payment solution, and a series of robust out-of-network cross promotional opportunities.”

Gree believes the still-unnamed service will help expand its free-to-play presence internationally, as the Tokyo-based company intends to launch the platform globally. It believes it can reach more than one billion users across Western and Asian markets.

The platform’s new SDK is designed to give all developers access to Gree’s current player base of more than 150 million registered mobile gamers worldwide, which includes users on both iOS and Android devices.

Gree says the SDK will provide “a seamless iOS and Android integration process”, analytics tools, unified iOS and Android APIs, and an app discovery portal. The platform will also support features like leaderboards and achievements.

“This new GREE platform continues to show the commitment we have to building a truly global, free-to-play ecosystem for mobile developers,” says Gree CEO and founder Yoshikazu Tanaka.

He adds, “Our goal is to offer the best social gaming experience to players around the world. GREE worldwide has the largest cross-platform network and this is a step closer to our goal of reaching one billion users.” (source:gamasutra

5)CastleVille Keeps Pace on This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Games by MAU

AJ Glasser

Different week, same story — CastleVille leads the fastest-growing games by monthly active users while Bubble Witch Saga and Tetris Battle follow.

Gem Rush and PokeristClub (formerly titled The Pokerist Club — Texas Poker) squeeze past Words With Friends for the No.4 and 5 spots on our list, and 2009 title Icy Tower makes a bit of a comeback at No.18. Other than that, the movement on this week’s rankings doesn’t point to any major activity in the social game industry — which is to be expected as we draw closer to the holidays and fewer developers launch new games.(source:insidesocialgames
