1)Zynga launches Farmville toys

by Zen Terrelonge

Social games developer wants to do an ‘Angry Birds’ but with horses and goats.

Zynga’s barnyard beasts will retail in Best Buy stores from $9.99. The firm is hoping to repeat Rovio’s success with the introduction of soft toys from its Farmville games franchise, which has been long anticipated.

Fans of the game will be able to choose from farmyard favourites including a pig, goat, sheep, chicken, duck, horse and rabbit from November 25th.

To tie in with the forthcoming change in season, the toys will be clad in winter garments. Presumably this is also to entice parents to pick one up as a stocking filler for Christmas presents.

Each purchase will come with ten free Farm Cash and a digital code for in-game use to receive a limited-edition virtual version of the toy and for extremists that collect all eight animals on sale, they will unlock an an in-game Super Orchard.(source:mobile-ent

2)Report: 81M People Play Social Games Every Day

by Mike Rose

A new 2011 market report has found that 118.5 million people now play social games at least once a week, up 71 percent compared to results from 2010.

The 2011 PopCap Social Gaming Research survey, as conducted by Information Solutions Group and commissioned by PopCap, noted that, in comparison, 81 million people play social games at least once a day.

In terms of spending on social games, the report explained that 31 million players have spent money on in-game purchases, up 86 percent year-over-year.

The survey also looked into the ages of social gamers, and showed that 30 percent of social gamers are under 30 years of age, compared to 19 percent in 2010.

20 percent of all U.S. social gamers are over 60 years old, compared to just 7 percent in the UK.

ISG explained that the social games surge is a “newer phenomenon” in the UK than in the U.S., as 38 percent of UK social gamers have been playing social games for more than 2 years, compared to 51 percent in the U.S..

Note that the survey was commissioned by PopCap, and is based on 1,201 online surveys by members of Toluna’s Internet ePanel. (source:gamasutra

3)Mobage Gets “One Piece” Social Game [Social Games]

by Dr. Serkan Toto

DeNA is pretty strong in securing anime-based social games for Mobage, and One Piece, announced by Bandai Namco today, might be their biggest game of that kind so far (the One Piece manga and anime are easily among the most valuable IP a company can own in these areas at the moment).

The full title of the title is “One Piece Grand Collection”, and it will be released on Mobage for Japanese feature phones and smartphones this winter.

Details are scarce, but Bandai Namco says that players will be able to create their own characters and build them up by completing missions and winning in battles. Needless to say, these characters (their own hero, friends, enemies, bosses, etc.) will be based on those from the One Piece manga.

DeNA and Bandai Namco are running a joint venture called BDNA, but it looks like this game will come from Bandai Namco proper.(source:serkantoto

4)Could games like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft work on Facebook?

by Joe Osborne

Who knows (and definitely not at the moment), but Facebook’s European head of gaming partnerships Julien Codorniou hopes “every successful game that exists on PC, consoles, should come on the Facebook platform at some point.” According to PocketGamer.biz, Codorniou made the forward-looking remark during this year’s Social Gaming Summit in London.

The European mirror to Facebook’s Sean Ryan did, however, point out what’s keeping the industry from getting to that point. Simply put, the rampant copycatting needs to stop. As PocketGamer.biz’s Will Wilson put it: ‘Please stop making FarmVille-style games, we’ve already got enough, thanks.’ Codorniou went on to praise games like Social Point’s Social Empires for sourcing its inspirations elsewhere, like the popular Age of Empires PC strategy franchise.

And while Codorniou wishes for the best games on consoles to also hit Facebook, he knows where the immediate future is. “We believe the mobile web platform is the future for the gaming industry,” Codorniou concluded. “Bet on mobile, HTML5. This is really the future of gaming for us.”

Alright, so you know that already. But let’s stop and think for a second: Could the best of traditional gaming really make it to Facebook? Well, we’re certainly getting there. From advancements in the Unity Player and Flash Player (the primary tool for making Facebook games) to the Unreal Engine arriving on Facebook, we’re inching ever closer to that reality. These types of games on the web are simply an eventuality–the audience for them, however, is far from that.(source:games

5)Zynga launches CastleVille social game and new FarmVille plush toys

Dean Takahashi

Social game maker Zynga formally launched CastleVille as part of its accelerated release schedule for games in advance of its planned initial public offering.

Zynga has high hopes for this addition to its Ville series of games — YoVille, PetVille, FishVille, FarmVille, CityVille — and its launch shows that the San Francisco-based company is staying on its schedule of launching something new every few weeks, rather than last year’s pace of launching something every few months. Zynga also introduced new plush toys for FarmVille today.

CastleVille joins other recent Zynga games, Empires & Allies, Adventure World, Pioneer Trail (formerly FrontierVille), Words With Friends on Facebook, and Mafia Wars 2. The title mashes up Zynga’s usual cartoon style, which has a wide appeal among Facebook users, with more interesting game play than it has had in the past.

The game was developed by the Zynga Dallas team the company acquired when it purchased Bonfire Studios last year. Bill Jackson, creative director on CastleVille, told us the game has next-generation social features, in a recent interview.

In the game, you build your own kingdom. It’s like a combination of Pioneer Trail and CityVille, except in a medieval fantasy setting. Zynga is launching the title today in 17 languages.

The game is social because you can visit your friends’ kingdoms and help them with tasks. That earns you Reputation Points, which you can use to buy expansion regions or decorations. The more social you are, the faster you can progress in the game. In an improvement over CityVille, it now takes a lot less time to interact with your friends in the game. As you push into unexplored territory, you push back the forces of The Gloom. If you want to explore all of the regions available on your playing map, the journey could take months.(source:venturebeat

6)Mafia Wars 2 Tops This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Games by MAU

AJ Glasser

Mafia Wars 2 takes the top spot on this week’s list of fastest-growing games by monthly active users while FarmVille and Ravenskye City come in right behind each with over 1 million new MAU.

Not much to show in the way of new games on our list this week, but we’re pleased to see 6waves Lolapps-published Zombie Island still going strong long after Halloween. The zombie-themed farming sim leverages a unique social feature where players can plant their friends’ brains to increase the maximum number of farmhands available per play session.
