1)Analyst: Monthly Android Downloads To Surpass iOS Downloads In June

by Mike Rose

A new report from analysis firm Xyologic predicts that by June 2012, the number of apps downloaded monthly for Android devices will have surpassed the number downloaded for iOS devices.

Currently, the App Store sees more than double the number of downloads that the Android Market and other Android download services see, with 1.45 billion apps downloaded for iOS devices in August compared to 640 million downloads for Android devices.

However, in an new Apple vs Android report, and as reported by business site Venturebeat, Xyologic estimates that both devices will see roughly 3.2 billion downloads each by June next year, with Android devices just ahead.

Monthly Android app downloads will then continue to increase more rapidly than download for iOS devices.

The company also predicts that the total number of Android apps downloaded will catch up with and surpass the total number of iOS downloads by mid-2013, with around 84 billion downloads for both.

As of now, iOS downloads stand at 18.2 billion in total, while Android downloads are at 6.76 billion.

Elsewhere, the report estimates that the total number of apps available for Android devices will surpass the App Store mid-2012, at the point when each has around 680,000 apps available. Current totals stand at 466,000 for iOS, and 289,000 for Android.

Xyologic co-founder Matthaus Krzykowski explained, “Apple continues to grow at exponential rates, but Android is growing at hyper-exponential rates.”

2)More kids are playing games thanks to rise of smartphones and tablets

Dean Takahashi

More kids are playing video games between the ages of 2 and 17, according to a new market research report.

The NPD Group reported today that the population of kids ages 2-17 grew just 1.54 percent since 2009. But the population of gamers in that age group has grown 12.68 percent.

This growth means that gaming is now a nearly ubiquitous activity for children in the United States. About 91 percent of kids, or 64 million children, play games, up 9 percentage points from 2009.

The fastest-growing age group is kids ages 2-5, up 17 percentage points compared to 2009. Other fast-growing segments are girls and teens ages 15 to 17. Anita Frazier, analyst at NPD, said that kids account for 44 percent of software sales at retail stores so far this year.

Gaming on mobile devices has experienced the biggest growth in the kids category, up from 8 percent to 38 percent. Gaming on traditional portable handheld gaming devices like the Nintendo DS has grown more modestly, from 38 percent to 45 percent. The change is due to the popularity of tablets, iOS devices and Android smartphones.

But despite the growth in mobile apps gaming, kids and their parents spent more than five times as much on retail games across devices than they did on mobile gaming apps for smartphones and other app-capable devices.

The survey was conducted from Aug. 1 to Aug. 15 this year and was completed by 4,136 kids ages 2 to 17.(source:venturebeat

3)Zipline Games’ Moai Platform To Support Google Chrome

by Tom Curtis

Zipline Games announced today that its Lua-based Moai game development platform will now support Google’s Native Client SDK, allowing developers to launch their games via the Chrome Web Store as browser-based applications.

This Moai update will coincide with the next stable version of Google Chrome, which includes support for OpenGL ES 2.0.

“Native Client is huge,” said Zipline CEO Todd Hopper. “We’ve talked to a dozen web-based social game developers who are ramping up mobile development efforts, and we know very successful iOS and Android game developers who are planning for web distribution of their titles.”

“Moai support for Google’s Native Client SDK gives both of these groups a terrific alternative to full game ports for each new platform. We’re very pleased to see Google leading in this area by supporting Native Client and OpenGL in Chrome,” he said.

Earlier this year, ex-Microsoft Games Studios vice president Shane Kim joined Zipline Games’ board of directors to advise the company on developing the Moai platform and forging new studio partnerships.

The Moai game development platform went into open beta this July, and has been used for titles such as HareBrained Schemes’ Crimson: Steam Pirates and Nay Games’ iOS title Bubble Ball. (source:gamasutra

4)iPad accounts for more than 97% of all tablet internet traffic in US, reckons comScore

by Matt Sakuraoka-Gilman

We don’t need numbers from research specialists to indicate what a huge success iPad has been to date, but when the figures are as resounding as those served up by comScore, it’s hard not to take a peek.

Indeed, the firm’s latest look into the US tablet market draws one, headline conclusion: Apple’s iPad accounts for more than 97 percent of all tablet-based internet traffic across the US.

Traffic jam

The numbers, taken across the course of August, suggest the wealth of Android tablets – not to mention BlackBerry’s PlayBook and HP’s TouchPad – have barely made an impression on iPad in the US to date.

Apple’s iPad is even over-reaching its smaller and more established cousin, iPhone, with 47 percent of total iOS-based internet usage, compared with iPhone’s 43 percent.

In total, iOS generates almost 60 percent of all non-computer traffic, putting Android firmly in the shade on just under 32 percent.

As a whole, however, the report indicates that the overall market for internet use is still very much in favour of computer based browsers, with tablets only accounting for a 7 percent share.(source:pocketgamer

5)Pocket Gems Confirms Redpoint Funding, Doesn’t Disclose Additional Details

By Kim-Mai Cutler

Last Friday, we pointed out that Pocket Gems — the maker of top grossing games like Tap Zoo and Tap Petshop — may have raised additional funding from Redpoint Ventures.

The company’s chief executive Daniel Terry confirmed the funding, but didn’t disclose additional details except to say that it happened a few months ago. Our understanding — though this is not confirmed — is that this wasn’t a classic second or late-stage round of venture funding and instead provided the founders liquidity. This is not without precedent in the mobile gaming industry as Rovio’s initial $42 million round from Accel Partners and Atomico Ventures was also secondary, according to sources familiar with the transaction.

Profit margins for many of these types of casual mobile-social games are declining as certain gaming genres have become more competitive and as developers have lost their ability to bring in new customers inexpensively through incentivized downloads on offer walls. That said, several developers may make up for tighter margins with improved monetization and the sheer number of new users that are activating iOS or Android phones each month.

While Pocket Gems had a strong first half of the year with solid and continuous hits like Tap Zoo and Tap Petshop, other competitors are better capitalized. TinyCo, which makes similar titles Tiny Zoo Friends and Tiny Pets, has $18 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz (which is enough to pay for a $20,000-a-month hiring billboard on Highway 101). Zynga also said today that it is entering the ring with an animal care-taking title called Dream Zoo. Beeline Interactive Inc., a subsidiary of Capcom which has a market capitalization of 138.8 billion yen ($1.78 billion), has Monster Pet Shop. There are also bootstrapped players in the space like Backflip Studios, which has a solid hit in DragonVale, a free-to-play dragon care-taking game that has held onto a slot among the top three grossing apps in the U.S. since the middle of last month.

As for other larger players in the space, we haven’t seen any additional confirmed rounds of funding.

In a panel I moderated today at GDC Austin, TinyCo’s director of business development Jennifer Lu, said the company would still be open to additional financing. Perry Tam, the chief executive of Storm8, another big player in the free-to-play gaming space, had no comment on the company’s rumored $1 billion valuation round. (source:insidemobileapps

6)CrowdStar Invests $1.5M In Mobile Startups Via StarFund Initiative

by Mike Rose

As part of its recently-announced mobile game development funding project StarFund, social game developer CrowdStar has revealed that it is investing in six new mobile game startups.

Although the names of the companies were not revealed in an interview with business website Venturebeat, CrowdStar did note that investments of $250,000 have been made in each developer.

The first couple of releases from these startups are set to debut on iOS and Android devices later this month.

Jim Mills, organiser of the StarFund, explained, “We’ve had great inbound interest since we announced the fund. We are focusing on games that have mass-market appeal and multi-platform game play.”

He continued, “We look at the likelihood of cross-promoting a developer’s game within our network, which is more heavily focused on females… We think mobile is an attractive gaming market opportunity, with similar impact to Facebook games.”

The company is hoping to attract mobile titles that can reach a billion users in total.

StarFund launched back in July, with CrowdStar noting that it was being run “to help spur the next generation of mobile social gaming innovation.”  (source: gamasutra
