Android Market

目前已获得支持的游戏包括New Game Town推出的《Happy Farm》和《Cage Fighter》,Upgraded Studios游戏《In the Club》以及Celander的《Goosy Avatar》。

1)Top 10 Android apps grab 43% of the pie, according to Nielsen study

Jolie O’Dell

Hundreds of thousands of apps populate the Android Market, but only a tiny percentage of them account for the vast majority of users’ in-app time.

The 10 most popular Android apps capture 43 percent of all the time spent by Android consumers on mobile apps, according to new data released today from market researcher Nielsen. When broadening that sample to the top 50 Android apps, Nielsen found that group of applications accounted for 61 percent of all time spent.

“With more than 250,000 Android apps available at the time of this writing, that means the remaining 249,950-plus apps have to compete for the remaining 39 percent of the pie,” wrote Don Kellogg, Nielsen’s director of telecom research and insights.

Also in Nielsen’s findings was this factoid: Most Android mobile users spend just about one hour each day using apps and mobile web browsers. Of that hour, around 67 percent of time is spent in applications, and 33 percent is spent browsing the web.(source:venturebeat

2)MocoSpace doubles down adding $1 million to its HTML5 game fund

by Jon Jordan

US mobile games, music and entertainment portal MocoSpace had already dropped $1 million into its fund encouraging developers to make mobile HTML5 games for its platform, and now it’s doubled down.

The reason given is to make sure developers will be ready for Facebook’s HTML5 initiative Project Spartan, which is expected to be publicly rolled out in the autumn. Selected developers will receive cash and marketing support to develop and promote their titles on the MocoSpace Games Platform.

“People want to be able to play games with their friends, no matter what kind of device they have. The best way to make a great cross-platform social gaming experience is to build with HTML5,” said MocoSpace’s CEO Justin Siegel.

“This is what Facebook is realising – and we can’t wait to see what Project Spartan is going to offer consumers and developers.”

Deal in play

To-date, games supported by the fund include New Game Town’s Happy Farm and Cage Fighter, Upgraded Studios’ In the Club and Celander’s Goosy Avatar. All the games on MocoSpace are free-to-play, social and browser-based, and the portal has 22 million users.

Indeed, the company has demonstated its enthusiasm by releasing two internally developed projects, Street Wars and Stage Hero, which have a combined total of over 700,000 monthly active users, average session times of over four minutes, and players averaging nearly two and a half sessions per day.

Developers interested in the fund are invited to submit existing games and proposals to games AT corp.mocospace.com. (source:pocketgamer

3)Nokia Teams Up with Polar Mobile to Develop Symbian and Windows Mobile Apps

By Bilal Hameed

Nokia has teamed up with Polar Mobile Inc, a Canadian Mobile developer, to produce more than 300 media applications for Nokia smartphones within one year time frame. The Apps will be launch on Nokia’s Symbian smartphones, the upcoming N9 and Nokia’s Windows Mobiles for more than 300 top tier global media brands including Wired UK, Kompas, Advertising Age, Globe and Mail, Shanghai Daily and 7DAYS.

Richard White, General Manager, Nokia Canada said:

Nokia is excited about the opportunity to team up with Polar Mobile to bring hundreds of quality apps to consumers around the world. Polar Mobile’s ability to scale and attract a global set of brands is strategic in supporting Nokia’s efforts in offering compelling apps and experiences for our users.

This is the biggest deal in the history of Polar Mobile. Over the next two months, Polar will release approximately 50 apps for Nokia’s Symbian operating system for existing line of phone. Polar will also develop apps for the MeeGo platform.

Kunal Gupta, Chief Executive Officer, Polar Mobile said:

Nokia is the largest handset manufacturer in the world. With smart phones, they’re hungry for a comeback. We are thrilled that Nokia has chosen Polar Mobile to provide top tier media apps for their devices. Nokia’s global consumer reach is important for many of our customers, especially in Europe, Middle East and Asia. Partnering with Nokia helps our media customers continue to grow their mobile audiences.

Nokia is very desperate to get a reasonable chunk of the smartphone market and so far it has shown little success. According to the research firm IDC, Nokia’s smartphone sales have dropped by 30% during the second quarter of this year. On the other hand the top two smartphone manufacturers by market share, Apple and Samsung, showed an increase of 141 and 380 percent respectively, during the same time.(source:socialtimes

4)Windows 8 To Feature ‘App Store’

by Kyle Orland

Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 PC operating system will feature an App Store, the company has confirmed via a post on the Building Windows 8 blog, offering another possible delivery system for games.

In the post, Microsoft Windows chief Steve Sinofsky lists an “App Store” team among those working on the new operating system, confirming screenshots of such a store (pictured) that were leaked earlier in the year.

No further details on the effort are provided, but Sinofsky grants that “you can probably figure out [what teams are working on] based on the name” of the teams.

This is not the first time that Microsoft has integrated a digital application marketplace into a PC operating system — Windows Vista included a Windows Marketplace that failed to attract much attention. The company also currently operates a web-based Games for Windows Live Marketplace.

Today’s confirmation comes more than 8 months after Apple replicated its success with the iOS app store by launching a version for the Mac platform, attracting over 1 million downloads in its first day of operation.

Microsoft previously contested Apple’s “App Store” trademark, saying the term is too generic to be protectable. Amazon also brought a similar case against Apple, which a judge recently said the Mac maker is likely to lose.

The Windows 8 OS will also include integration with Xbox Live, the company recently confirmed, much like the Windows Phone 7 platform.(source:gamasutra

5)HP Discontinues Production Of WebOS Devices, Including Touchpad

by Kyle Orland

Major technology company HP has announced it will be discontinuing production of WebOS devices, including mobile phones and the Touchpad line of tablet PCs.

The news comes just over a year after HP acquired WebOS maker Palm for $1.2 billion, and less than two months after the July launch of the company’s TouchPad tablet line.

WebOS was never a major player in a smartphone marketplace dominated by the iOS, Android and Blackberry platforms, representing less than two percent of all handsets at its peak.

Still a number of game developers ported games to the platform, including Electronic Arts, Rovio, Glu Mobile, and Gameloft. Fearless Studios, the independent developer studio founded by former LucasArts employees Haden Blackman and Cedrick Collomb, announced a major project for the platform as recently as June.

HP says it “will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.”

Meanwhile, HP has also confirmed it is looking into selling or splitting off its Personal Systems Group, which includes the company’s consumer PC business as well as business workstations. (source:gamasutra

6)Gamescom ’11: Rumour – OnLive for smartphones heading to HTC Evo 4G first

by Will Wilson

While it’s not yet been officially confirmed, OnLive dropped strong hints today that we’re likely to see its streaming games service make its debut on smartphones at some point in the future.

The HTC Evo 4G was mentioned by name during our discussions with the firm, although there was no confirmation that this would be the first handset to get the service.

It stands to reason that an HTC model would be the first in line to receive OnLive, before the more obvious choices of the iPhone or Galaxy S II, as the Taiwanese company bought a significant stake in the streaming service’s business back in February.

The Evo 4G is also one of the smartphones that border on tablet size in any case, measuring 4.3 inches and featuring a kickstand for viewing videos.(source:pocketgamer

7)They may not buy Tablets, but they love the ads

By Erica Ogg

Apple has by far the best-selling tablet on the market. And the company is known for its glossy, well-produced ads backed by (sometimes annoyingly) catchy tunes. But according to analysis of consumer reaction to all the tablet ads aired on TV this year, the most effective tablet ad produced so far is not from iPad maker. Rather, it’s from Apple’s frenemy Samsung for its Galaxy Tab.

AceMetrix produced the report, which scores ads based on elements of persuasion (desire, relevance, likeability, attention, information, and change) and “watchability,” or how engaged a person feels with the product after viewing the ad. Samsung’s “Feel Free” ad, scored the highest with 650 points. Apple’s best-scoring iPad ad, “It Becomes Delightful, Even Magical,” is next closest to the Tab ad, with a score of 640. Research in Motion’s Playbook ad, which focuses on the tablet’s multitasking and Adobe Flash support, was the third-highest ranked with a score of 636. HP’s TouchPad TV spot follows with 633. See the rest of the list here.

HP actually aired the most TV spots so far this year, with eight different versions of TouchPad ads. Samsung was next with six for its Android-based tablet, according to AceMetrix. Apple is close behind them with five iPad ads aired this year, but received consistently higher scores. Averaged together, Apple’s five ads scored the highest of tablet makers with 627, while Samsung’s six averaged scores of 607.

If you’ve been following the progress of other tablet makers that are not named Apple, you’ll note that the Samsung ad judged “most effective” is not translating to the best sales. Android tablets in general, of which the Galaxy Tab is one, are being outsold by the iPad, by some accounts, by a ratio of eight to one. Apple sold 9 million iPads in its most recent quarter. The PlayBook shipped (not sold) a mere 500,000 units in its first quarter, and we don’t know exact figures yet on the TouchPad, but Best Buy is reported to be sitting on a stack of them, unsold.(source:gigaom
