Onlive

1. Newly released data from the NPD group shows that massive growth in U.S. spending on digital games and associated content helped offset a previously reported decrease in new retail game sales for the year.

NPD’s recently completed estimates put the total U.S. consumer spend on “games content” in 2010 — including sales of downloadable games and content as well as new retail releases — at $15.9 billion, down less than half a percent from 2009.

That’s in sharp contrast to new U.S. retail software sales alone, which NPD data previously showed declining 5 percent in 2010 to $10.1 billion for the year.

Comparing those numbers puts purely digital game content sales for 2010 at $5.8 billion, or about 36 percent of the total software market.

This is a significant increase from 2009, where digital content combined with used games, rentals and subscriptions to represent only $4.5 to $4.7 billion in U.S. sales, according to NPD. That would peg annual growth in the digital segment for 2010 at a minimum of roughly 23 percent. (Source: Gamasutra)

2. OnLive keeps refining its games-on-demand service to make it more social. Today, the company announced that it has initiated automatic recording of game sessions so that users can capture their finest moments and share them.

It also unleashed the ability to automatically share the online service with friends on a user’s Gmail list. Both features are important to improving the social nature of OnLive, which is critical to help the service spread far and wide.

OnLive has also added new achievements and the Gmail-based OnLive Friend Finder. Finding friends automatically is what helped Facebook grow into a huge social network. OnLive recognizes that and will add more ways to invite your friends to join its service in an automated way. OnLive also has new email notifications for everything from friend requests to chat messages and video sharing.

When users log into OnLive, they will also find an upgrade to the games list, with personal stats tracked for each game on the list, such as total play time, last time played, and achievements earned. (Source: Games Beat)

3. The Major has word that the next time you start up Netflix on your Xbox 360, you’ll be prompted to accept and update introducing Kinect support for Netflix.

The update allows for “controller-free navigation of thousands of movies and TV show, allowing you to use just the sound of your voice or wave of your hand to control your favorite Netflix content.”

Users will be able to select movies and TV shows recommended by Netflix, and play, pause, fast forward and rewind using gesture or voice. (Source: VG247)

4. Most Blizzard fans are already well aware that the company is hard at work on a next-generation MMO currently being developed under the codename “Titan.” However, it looks like there might be another new property in the works at the company.

Gamespot noted a new job posting for a software engineer position on the Blizzard jobs portal, looking for a “a creatively minded and talented individual to serve as tools engineer for its newest game team.” The posting seems to make it clear that this is a new project when it asks prospective applicants “Do you have a deep passion for developing the tools that empower designers and artists to create epic gameplay experiences? Does the idea of joining a new team in its early stages and establishing pipelines and development environments excite you?”

Now, Titan has not been official unveiled but the project has been in development for some time. In addition the jobs portal page has listings for several positions under the heading “Next Generation MMO” (which we can assume is the Titan project). This new posting is under a different header that reads “Unannounced Game Title.” (Source: Game Informer)
