Tellabs

Study: US Mobile Carriers To Be Unprofitable By 2013, Thanks to iPhone and Android

US mobile operators like Verizon and AT&T are not capable of surviving the iPhone age and unless they transform their networks and business models, they would become an endangered race within the next three years, according to a new study conducted by Tellabs.

The explosion of mobile internet usage, thanks to astounding success of iPhone and Android devices, has put increased pressure on mobile networks. Operators are currently coping with this increased data usage by adding additional capacity or by throttling data hogs. However this strategy is not sustainable in the long term, since the current business model of charging for calls and SMS and offering data for a flat fee wont bring in adequate revenues.

According to Rob Pullen, CEO and President of Tellabs:

Mobile operators can spend themselves into a hole well before users run out of hunger for capacity. Our study shows that simply adding capacity or ‘dumb pipes’ is an unsustainable business. To avoid the ‘end of profit,’ operators must bring intelligence to their networks – it’s critical to carrier survival.

The mobile operators are currently in a catch 22 situation, if they don’t offer flat fee based data packages to their users they risk losing out to competitors and if they do offer such packages they are at a risk of becoming unsustainable enterprises.

According to the report, all mobile operators are facing these risks, but US operators will likely reach the end of their profitability date by 2013. Operators in Asia/Pacific (Japan, Australia etc) will do so by the end of 2013, with Western European operators joining their Asian and US counterparts by the start of 2015.

In order to reverse this trend, the report suggests that mobile operators would have to become intelligent carriers instead of dumb pipes for the data. One way to make a network intelligent would be to deploy powerful analytics to make networks smart so they deliver the right bandwidth to the right user at the right time. In addition to this, operators will have to look for new business models and new value added services to have additional revenue streams.(source:socialtimes)
