跨平台游戏搜索网站TeePee Games创始人谈运营计划

对游戏用户来说,现在真是一个游戏黄金时代,市场上从来没有这么多有趣又低价的游戏可以任人选择;但对开发商而言,市场上已经充斥着太多的廉价游戏,大家都被迫压低价格,也因此阻碍了自己的长远发展。跨平台游戏搜索网站TeePee Games的成立,意在提供一个双卖双方都能称心如意的解决方案,让用户从中淘到好东西,同时又让开发商的游戏实现真正的价值。

据游戏邦了解,游戏发行商Player X的创始人托尼·皮尔斯(Tony Pearce)今年初将公司卖给西班牙手机游戏发行商Zed后,自己又创办了TeePee Games,该网站将于明年初正式上线。皮尔斯在近日的采访中向pocketgamer介绍了TeePee Games今后的运营计划。下文为访谈内容:

为什么说有必要创建一个像TeePee这类的跨平台社交门户网站?

因为社交网站、网络在线及智能手机等游戏正快速发展,游戏玩家要从成千上万的游戏中淘宝,已经变得更加困难。TeePee Games是一个简便、用户友好型的门户网站,致力于为玩家提供有趣的跨平台游戏搜索服务。

比如说,到底有多少人可以说出Facebook在此时的前10强社交游戏?我想大部分人能说出Facebook上5款游戏名称就已经不错了,更不要说现在排名前十的社交游戏了。可事实上,Facebook上的社交游戏已经超过了3万5千款,如果把网页Flash游戏以及智能手机应用商店中的游戏也考虑入列,这些游戏可就是成千上万款。

由于大多数游戏搜索服务范围都很宽泛,这就导致一些真正高品质的游戏无法出头,陷入不为人知的沉寂,TeePee Games提供的服务不会让出色的游戏成为漏网之鱼。

我们并不在乎游戏在排行榜上的名次,也无所谓它在玩家好友之间的受欢迎程度,我们重视的是为用户挑选质量过硬的好游戏,不管它是不是最新出炉,病毒式营销效果如何。

玩家一般都只关注自己所在平台的游戏,你认为跨平台游戏搜索网站对他们有什么帮助?

我们为玩家创造针对不同平台的游戏搜索服务,并从他们玩过的每款游戏中赢取信誉积分。在2011年第一季度,我们会提供针对Facebook、Android、黑莓、Windows Phone 7和在线Flash游戏网站这几个平台的服务;在第二阶段,我们的服务范围会延伸到MySpace、Bebo、Hi5等更多社交平台,当然iPhone和网页付费游戏下载网站这些平台也不例外。目前还没有哪一个游戏搜索网站的服务可以这样周到,可以像TeePee Games这样可以为用户提供如此贴心的选择。

在TeePee Games成立初期,你们打算通过什么病毒式营销渠道,聚集更多的用户人气?

明年2月我们会在Facebook上展开一场市场营销活动,也会通过博客和公共关系渠道进行推广。我们已经开发了自己的社交网站Tribes,支持TeePee用户参与其中,与其他玩家进行互动,上传图片或视频,让大家共同讨论自己在该网站上玩过的游戏。我们已经和一些第三方企业签约了“白色标签”业务合作(游戏邦注:指一方提供产品,由另一方用自己的品牌进行销售),这样大家在许多用户网站上都可以看到TeePee Games的标志。

TeePee Games的信誉和地位对我们来说非常重要,我们将通过举办一系列的社交活动和游戏大赛来打响知名度,提高用户人气。

请问你认为TeePee针对哪一个平台的游戏搜索最管用?

TeePee Games拥有一个很棒的搜索引擎Geronimo,它汇集了Amazon推荐引擎、苹果Genius、Tivo的强大功能。它可以创建一个详细的用户文件夹,记录用户在不同平台玩过的游戏,并根据游戏内容和用户喜好,提供分类推荐服务,这个搜索引擎对各个平台的都一样有效。

你曾经提到TeePee具有保存游戏的功能,能否具体介绍下这种功能?

用户所玩的任何一款游戏都可以通过本地链接的形式,保存到TeePee文件夹,他们还可以创建一个自己最喜欢的游戏收藏目录。如果你发现了一款很喜欢的游戏,可以先把它保存到文件夹中,然后继续搜索其他新游戏,回头再玩自己收藏的游戏。

你们将如何鼓励用户在TeePee社区中积极互动,又不至于让他们感到无趣而回到各自偏好的社交网站中?

TeePee Games的口号是“与你的游戏同在”(Where your games live),我们整个平台的定位就是成为休闲游戏领域的Facebook。

我们的宗旨是成为一个极具价值、聚集大量游戏用户的社交网站,打造一个独特而备受信赖的高端游戏社区。游戏娱乐元素是这个门户网站的根基,我们还会为玩家提供一些积分,鼓励他们赢取更多积分,成为TeePee社区领袖,使大家更有融入TeePee社区的积极性。

目前的业务发展计划是什么?

CEO Tony Pearce on how cross platform discovery site TeePee will flatten social and mobile gaming confusion

From a consumers’ point of view, this is a golden age of gaming: there’s never been such a great variety of entertainment available at such a low price.

For developers, however, there are too many cheap games, with price, in particular, being a key obstacle in terms of them creating a sustainable longterm business.

It’s at this collision point that TeePee Games hopes to please both sides of the equation.

Founded by Tony Pearce, who set up mobile publisher Player X, selling it to Spanish aggregrator Zed early in 2010, the cross platform discovery site is currently being prepared for an early 2011 roll out.

A good time then to find out what Pearce’s plans are.

Pocket Gamer: Why is there a need for a cross platform social portal like TeePee?

Tony Pearce: The huge growth in gaming across social networks, online and smartphones is making it more difficult for players to navigate the ever growing catalogue of titles available and, as a result, making it harder for them to discover great games.

TeePee Games provides a simple, user friendly web portal that will make finding games across new and emerging digital platforms easy and fun.

For example, how many people can name even the top 10 games on Facebook right now?

I think most could name five Facebook titles at best, let alone the current top 10. Yet there are over 35,000 games for the platform. If you factor in browser Flash titles and smartphone app stores, the figure multiplies into the hundreds of thousands.

In that truly vast selection, there are some genuinely great games that will never gain the attention and level of play that they deserve, which is where TeePee Games comes in to provide a conduit for discovering great games.

We don’t care about the charts, or what’s currently in vogue on friend streams and the like – what we care about is the choice of quality games, irrespective of their novelty or current virality.

Players typically focus on one platform for their gaming, so why do you think a cross platform discovery site will work?

We give players a choice to find games across digital platforms and then earn loyalty points for every one they play. For the launch in Q1 2011, we will offer games from Facebook, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone 7 and online Flash game sites.

Phase two will extend that remit to games across more social networks such as MySpace, Bebo and Hi5, as well as iPhone and browser-based subscription gaming websites. No-one else is offering such a range of platforms in a discovery site, or packaging and tailoring the bewildering choice for users in the way that TeePee Games will.

How do you plan to get enough people using the site initially to build up the viral connections to get a viable user base?

We have a marketing campaign on Facebook starting in February, with blogging and PR also playing an essential role. We have developed our own social network called Tribes, where all TeePee users can join and meet fellow gamers, upload pictures or videos, and generally chat about the games they are playing via the site. We have already signed up a number of thirdparty white label affiliate deals which will allow TeePee Games to be found on a range of large consumer sites.

Loyalty and status is important to TeePee Games and we will be launching a number of social events and game tournaments which we hope will help create player buzz and really ramp up that stickiness when it comes to loyalty.

Which platforms of those you’re covering do you think TeePee will work best in terms of game discovery?

TeePee Games has built an incredible discovery engine called Geronimo, which is a cross between Amazon’s recommendation engine, Apple Genius and Tivo.

It learns and grows with the user, building a detailed profile of what they have played across different gaming platforms and in turn recommends the best in class games content, which is selected for each user on a personal basis.

The discovery engine works identically across all platforms.

When you say that TeePee will enable players to store their games, what do you mean?

Any game you play will be stored in your TeePee profile with a link to its location on the internet, providing a convenient place to build a catalogue of all your favourite titles. If you find a game you like, you can also save the link to your profile and continue to search for new titles and then come back and play it at a later time.

How are you planning to build up and encourage a community to interact on TeePee rather than drifting away to their various social networks?

Our motto for TeePee Games is that it’s “Where your games live”. The entire platform is designed specifically to be the Facebook of casual gaming.

Our mission, in terms of being a social network of worth, is to build a valuable population of players and a distinct and trusted brand that represents the community for a vast range of high quality games. Gaming elements are also fundamental to the portal, with functionality such as earning points and working your way up to become Chief TeePee being a key incentive to engage with TeePee directly.

What are the current plans in terms of launch schedule?

We aim to have a soft launch in February 2011 and the main marketing campaign starting in March.(source:pocketgamer)
