Gameloft to load up on freemium games and map pack IAP for 2011

Given the success of publishers such as ngmoco, Glu Mobile and Capcom with their recent freemium releases, it makes sense for leading premium paid game publishers such as Gameloft to experiment with the business model too.

And apparently that’s what the French company is doing, as news is leaking out that it has one mobile MMOG in development, and will be including in-app purchases on some of its future paid games.

Hardcore payout

To be fair, Gameloft has made noises about this sort of thing before, pondering the possibilities of selling additional cars and tracks for its Asphalt racer when the release of iOS 3.0 first enabled IAP back in 2009.

However, this time, it seems that the micro-transactional model is being spread widely throughout Gameloft’s future releases, with games such as N.O.V.A. 2 and StarFront: Collision cited as likely examples.

A Gameloft source said one reason for its interest was the amount of requests it gets concerning additional content such as new weapons and maps; a model that has proved lucrative in terms of digital downloads for console games.

As for the freemium MMOG, it’s said to be similar to Sega’s Kingdom Conquest. (source:pocketgamer)
