1，Glu Mobile announced today that it has partnered with music superstar Taylor Swift to develop a new mobile game. The move represents Swift’s first foray into mobile games, but Glu has been specializing in starpower ever since it established the celebrity mobile game market with the megahit Kim Kardashian: Hollywood in mid-2014.
Glu has deals with celebrities who collectively have more than a billion followers on social media. That’s important because the rising cost of advertising for mobile games has driven game developers to be creative about getting eyeballs for the newest mobile titles in a sea of apps. Celebrities take their cut of the proceeds, but they also offer a huge boon on social media because they can share games with their audience with no extra advertising costs.
San Francisco-based Glu figured out this model with Kim Kardashian, who can keep interest in her own game high by tweeting about it. Niccolo De Masi, chief executive of Glu, talked about this advantage at our GamesBeat 2015 conference in October. Glu has also followed the Kardashian game with one about Katy Perry’s life, and it has signed deals with Britney Spears, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, and Nicky Minaj.
Celebrities are noticing that mobile games can be lucrative. The Kardashian game generated $146 million in revenue to date. The Taylor Swift game will be a “one-of-a-kind digital gaming experience.”
Swift has more than 227 million followers on social, including 74 million on Facebook, 70.4 million on Twitter, 64.8 million on Instagram, and 18 million on Vevo. (There’s some overlap on those channels).
The title will come out in late 2016, and Glu will release more details later.
“Bringing with her over 227 million social followers, I am thrilled to welcome Taylor Swift, an award-winning singer, musician and songwriter, to Glu’s family,” said De Masi, in a statement. “We realize that Taylor and her global fan base expect a new and highly differentiated mobile gaming experience. Glu is equally committed to designing never before seen gameplay elements that utilize Taylor’s unique creativity. Accordingly, we will spend the required development time to ensure this innovation is achieved.”
Swift has won seven Grammy Awards, 19 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association awards, 9 Academy of Country Music awards, 22 Billboard Music awards, one Brit award, one Emmy award, and 25 Teen Choice Awards. She is the only woman in history to be named Billboard Magazine’s “Woman of the Year” twice, in 2011 and most recently again in 2014. In 2015, she was named one of Time Magazine’s ‘”100 Most Influential People in the World.” Her albums have sold more than 40 million copies.（source：venturebeat.com ）
2，Grand Theft Auto is still one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world.
Publisher Take-Two Interactive revealed today that developer Rockstar Games has shipped more than 60 million copies of Grand Theft Auto V across all platforms. That does not mean consumers have bought 60 million copies — instead, this figure refers to how many GTA V units retailers have ordered in total. With the possible exception of the military first-person shooter Call of Duty, no gaming franchise regularly reaches megahit status like Grand Theft Auto. The open-world crime originally debuted in 2013, but Rockstar was able to keep demand high by releasing an updated version for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles in late 2014 and the PC in April. PC and console gaming is a business worth tens of billions of dollars, and a lot of that cash goes to biggest blockbuster hits.
The company went on to say that GTA was its biggest contributor to its digital revenues as well.
“The largest contributors to [net revenue] in fiscal third quarter 2016 were Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, NBA 2K16, WWE 2K16, and the Borderlands series,” reads the Take-Two financial report.
During a call with investors, Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick elaborated on that.
“The holiday season brought us the highest level of revenue yet for GTA Online,” the executive said. “And we had the highest number of active users [for the game].”（source：venturebeat.com ）
3，China’s stock market has had a bad year, but the country’s game industry remains strong and on track to grow dramatically over time. That’s the underlying belief behind Chinese game market analyst firm Niko Partners’ annual predictions for the digital games industry in China for 2016.
Lisa Cosmas Hanson, founder of Niko Partners, passed along the company’s 14 top predictions for the year. It expects overall revenues for the entire Chinese game market — PC online, mobile, and console games — to be $26 billion. Niko also predicts that mobile games will rise from $5.5 billion domestically (excluding export revenue of $1.3 billion) in 2015 to $11.1 billion in 2019. That’s healthy growth, but it also means that China is over the hump in terms of its peak growth rate for mobile games. (In this category, Niko only measures revenue generated in China).
It predicts the market for esports — such as professional or amateur tournaments with games such as League of Legends (a online strategy phenomenon) — will also grow. Hundreds of millions of Chinese gamers play and watch esports already. Highly regarded esports commentators earn about $1.5 million per year, just as announcers for esports tournaments.
And as Alphabet (Google’s new parent company) has signaled, the Google Play store will likely debut in China during 2016, boosting Android game downloads and advertising campaigns for mobile games.
Niko Partners expect virtual reality will also hit the Chinese market in a big way, and Chinese companies will build products that compete against VR titans such as Oculus and Sony. This year’s ChinaJoy 2016 show in July 2016 will have a large special VR section.
Meanwhile, investment in Internet cafes, where many Chinese play PC games, rose in 2015 across multiple metropolitan regions. Niko expects that investment to continue, fueled by demand for multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games such as League of Legends and Dota 2. Internet cafes will also be strengthened by the interest in esports.（source：venturebeat.com ）
4，CCP, the studio behind EVE Online, will close its free-to-play PlayStation 3 game Dust 514 in May.
“We consider Dust 514 one of the best free-to-play offerings on the platform, but the years have caught up with us. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Duat 514 will be shutting down on May 30th, 2016,” CCP revealed in a forum post.
“Players will continue to be able to play for free on our servers until then, but all further PSN packs and purchases have been removed and disabled from the in-game marketplace and the PlayStation Store. Players with existing Aurum will be able to continue to purchase items from the in-game marketplace.”
After an open beta the game was officially released on May 14, 2013 and was directly connected with the world of EVE Online. The game used two currencies, Aurum and ISK, and micro-transactions.
Last May CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said “Dust is a profitable business for CCP.”
The forum post also mentioned that CCP’s development team in Shanghai was working on a new PC FPS that will take the learnings from Dust 514 and use them in development.
“Since this new game will be different from Dust 514 (although keeping many of its great parts), we will provide tiered recognition rewards to our loyal Dust customers, details to be announced,” said the post.（source：gamesindustry.biz ）
