1，Strong brands help mobile games, but super brands are even better.
The mobile action-RPG Marvel Future Fight has passed 20 million downloads just two months after releasing, counting both its iOS and Android versions. According to App Annie, it reached the top spot in daily downloads in over 40 countries in May, including the U.S. and South Korea. This makes it a hit in a mobile market that could be worth $30 billion this year, according to research firm Newzoo. This also shows how brands can make the difference in finding players — and in users finding your app in the first place.
Some of the smartest people in mobile tech will be discussing the challenge of growing app engagement and the power of brands at VentureBeat’s MobileBeat conference in San Francisco July 13 and July 14. A few tickets still remain. Sign up now.
Marvel is an incredibly hot brand right now, so it’s no surprise to see any free-to-play mobile game with its name on it do well.
“As long as Marvel movies continue to rank among the world’s highest grossing films, we won’t be surprised to see this pattern of success for Marvel IPs continue on mobile,” reads an App Annie report on May’s top mobile games. “More generally, mobile games that feature well-known Hollywood IPs have continued to perform exceptionally well throughout the years, even as the mobile gaming landscape has changed.”（source：venturebeat.com ）
2，So, by way of an online petition trying to save it, we’ve found out that Solstice Arena [Free], the “Speed MOBA” from Zynga, is shutting down. One intrepid internet user wants to help save the game, but it looks like it’s shutting down for good on August 12th. AppAnnie stopped reporting data for the game on June 15th, it’s still on Steam, though it’s gone from the App Store and Google Play.
Of course, if you’re wondering why the game is shutting down, the claim of 5000 active users by someone with a vested interest in keeping the game active is some key evidence why that game might be dying. Especially so when you consider that this isn’t just a mobile game, but one available for desktop as well. But since it uses the standard MOBA monetization of buying characters, it’s probably not getting that many paying users to begin with. And the game was nowhere on the grossing charts at all. So as an aging game with relatively no players, making practically nothing, it’s obvious why it’s shutting down. It’s sad, because we have a pretty cool game that’s dying down, and it’s probably not convincing Zynga or anyone else to try the genre again. But as I like to say: we all gotta die someday. It’s just Solstice Arena’s time.（source：toucharcade.com ）
3，Gamasutra has received word that a number of longtime mobile publisher/developer Gameloft employees (as many as 100) have been laid off this week as the Siegefall & Dungeon Hunter creator moves to shut down its New York City office.
When reached for comment, a Gameloft representative would neither confirm how many developers had lost their jobs nor make a definitive statement on Gameloft’s operations in New York going forward. They simply provided the following response:
“Gameloft is actively managing its production organization and is refocusing on its most efficient and experienced creation centers in order to adapt to rapidly changing market conditions and to grow its revenues faster and more profitably.”
When pressed for further clarification, the representative refused to comment. Gamasutra is seeking further details on the situation, and if you or someone you know was affected by this event you can email Gamasutra to tell your story confidentially.（gamasutra.com ）
