1,Around the world, approximately 1.1 billion people play games on portable devices — and most of those are Android phones or tablets, according to a new report from analysts at IDC and App Annie. The two intelligence firms have worked together to release their latest spotlight on the gaming industry, and they have found that Android now makes up nearly 75 percent of all smartphones and tablets used for gaming.

That figure is actually up 4.3 percentage points, and that comes at the expense of iOS and the rest of the market. In the first quarter of 2014, iOS was about 21 percent of this space, but in Q1 2015, it is now around 19 percent. Of course, Apple’s platform is still responsible for the majority of the $30 billion in spending on mobile games, but that’s also starting to change.

Compared to Q1 2014, spending on the iOS App Store is up a massive 30 percent. But Google Play is growing even faster. Spending on that platform grew by around 50 percent from Q1 2014 to Q1 2015 — although Google Play is still only at about 75 percent of what iOS makes.

Beyond the competition between iOS and Android, it’s clear that both are finding huge success. And one of the main reasons for that, according to App Annie and IDC, is online multiplayer games.

The study found that apps with online multiplayer tend to engage people for longer periods of time. In 2015, fans of these games spent about 35 minutes extra playing them every week on average. Consumers are also willing to spend more money.(source:venturebeat.com

2,Rovio Entertainment today announced the worldwide launch of Angry Birds Fight!, a Match-3 puzzle game for iOS and Android.

A fusion of Japanese culture with classic Angry Birds characters, Fight! is the first title in the blockbuster franchise to feature player vs. player game play. Players race against the clock to match as many panels as possible, powering up their birds for battle against other players around the world. The title also has some light role-playing game elements, including uncharted islands filled with rogue challengers and battle tools that can be equipped to gain an edge in combat.

Fight! has been downloaded over 3 million times since it first launched in Asia Pacific in May 2015.

The worldwide launch comes at a time when consumer interest in the Angry Birds franchise seems to be sagging. The company reported in March that revenues had fallen 9 percent to $170.6 million in 2014. Rovio also laid off over 100 employees and closed a studio in Tampere, Finland last year.(source:venturebeat.com

3,Winko Games has raised $1.4 million in seed funding from London Venture Partners, Initial Capital and Kibo Ventures. The Barcelona-based studio will create core-focused games for mobile platforms.

Winko’s seed investors also funded Supercell, NaturalMotion and Super Evil Megacorp., and the last of those offers the best perspective here. The Barcelona-based studio is working on an “RPG with strategy battles” aimed at core gamers, similar to Super Evil Megacorp’s Vainglory.

London Venture Partners’ David Gardner said that Winko’s focus on core gamers taps into one of the most promising growth sectors for mobile. “Winko Games is at the right place, at the right moment, and with a strong team to deliver,” he said in a statement.

“Even though mobile revenue will soon surpass all other segments in gaming, most core gamers are still playing on consoles and PCs,” added Jean-Laurent Wotton, Winko’s CEO and co-founder. “We want to provide those players with strategy games that bring a deeper overall experience.”

Wotton was previously chief revenue officer at Social Point. He founded the studio with COO Sergio Gil Moreno, who was Social Point’s head of marketing.

Winko’s first game will be released in Q4 this year.(source:gamesindustry.biz
