The game industry has been steadily moving more and more into the online world, and this is likely where its future lies, especially since game makers need not worry about specific platforms if the titles essentially exist online in a cloud. Speaking at the London Games Conference in the opening keynote, Bigpoint founder and MD Heiko Hubertz said that developers shouldn’t rely on PC, console, mobile or browser-based, but instead should look to make online games that work across the entire range of technologies.
”It’s not rocket science to understand why online games like Farmville have been so massively successful: they have localized global distribution and relatively low development costs, and this is exactly why they will continue to be the blueprint for profitable games development,” he stated.
“When it comes to the future of gaming, do not make the mistake of throwing everything at one platform, and especially not if that platform is Facebook – you’ll only create a very dangerous dependency. Remember that quality and cross-platform development is king. You need to make it possible for users to play the same character in the same game on different platforms and interact with them in real-time.”
Cloud-based services like OnLive and Gaikai should hopefully make this possible, but the technologies are still very young. （Source：IndustryGamers）
