1,Yahoo’s mobile analytics and ad platform, Flurry, has released new data measuring the activation of new mobile devices and app downloads during December 2014, with a specific focus on the Christmas holiday. Flurry examined data from the more than 600,000 apps it tracks to understand which devices were most given as presents this year, and which apps users downloaded as soon as they were received.

The data reflects Apple’s continued dominance in the space, as Apple devices accounted for 51 percent of the new device activations Flurry tracked in the week of December 19 – December 25, 2014. Samsung came in second with 17.7 percent of new device activations, while Microsoft (Nokia) rounded out the top three at 5.8 percent.

Flurry also tracked the individual styles of devices activated during the week of Christmas, and noted phablets (large smartphones like the iPhone 6 Plus or Galaxy Note 4) were gaining on smaller devices, accounting for 13 percent of new device activations, up from four percent in 2013. Specifically, the iPhone 6 Plus was one of the top five devices Flurry saw activated this Christmas, while the standard iPhone 6 was the top activated device.(source:inside mobileapps

2,User acquisition and marketing company Fiksu has released its indexes for the month of November 2014, which saw app downloads soar on iOS devices, triggered by owners of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as increased mobile activity over the Thanksgiving break. The company’s App Store Competitive Index, which tracks the average number of daily downloads for the top 200 free iPhone apps in the US, hit 8.1 million for the month of November,
up from 7.8 million in October, and up 42 percent year-over-year.

Since users were so rapidly downloading new apps throughout the month, the iOS Cost Per Loyal User Index dropped 27 percent to $1.58 for the month, a 12 percent decrease year-over-year. Not only were users organically downloading new apps to fill their new devices, which means developers spent less money to acquire them, but users are (overall) spending more time in the apps they download.

A September 2014 report from marketing and analytics company Localytics showed in-app time increasing by 21 percent over the past year. For a specific example, Localytics found users now open an app, on average, 11.5 times per month, up from 9.4 a year ago.(source:insidemonbileapps

3,G5 Entertainment has announced the launch of its Twin Moons mystery adventure game on Windows Phone devices. The game was previously released on iOS, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore for Kindle Fire tablets, but now allows a new set of players to get in on the act of searching for items while helping a researcher named Jack recover from amnesia. Jack’s past becomes clearer (but perhaps more frightening) over time, and the game leads to one of two alternate endings for players. In Twin Moons, players can choose from three difficulty levels. Players familiar with titles in the hidden object adventure genre may choose the challenge mode, which removes the visual markers for objectives on the map (among other challenges), while newcomers may opt for the casual mode, which includes those objective markers, faster hint recharges and more.(source:insidemobileapps.com

4,Fashland developer Gamegos has launched its newest title on Facebook, a match-three puzzle game called Magic Drops. The game takes players on an adventure with a wise owl named Owlin, whose potions have been destroyed. Users will need to cook new potions to replace those that were lost, and will do so by collecting the proper ingredients, or magical drops, in each level.

Each level of Magic Drops has a different overall goal and board layout. A basic level, for instance, may ask players to collect a large number of a particular color (or colors) of drop before running out of moves. As levels become more complicated, players may be asked to remove bushes from the board by making matches next to them, or to collect pearls by making two separate matches next to each seashell.

Players remove drops from the board by clicking and dragging their mouse to create a line of three or more symbols of the same color. Gamers can create vertical or horizontal lines, as well as diagonal matches. If players create a line of seven or more symbols in a single move, they create a blaster drop, capable of clearing a large number of symbols from the board when activated. One may clear an entire column of symbols, while another clears an entire row, and so on.(source:insidesocialgames.com
