1,Facebook has today announced its games of the year for 2014, highlighting the best games from the worlds of both Facebook and mobile gaming. The winners were selected based on player ratings, strength of Facebook implementation, growth and overall game quality, while Facebook’s staff also made some selections for the best games they played this year.

The Facebook 2014 Game of the Year honor went to SGN’s Cookie Jam, a match-three, level-based puzzle game that sees players creating matches with specific ingredients in order to complete recipes.

Nine other games were highlighted as the Best New Games of 2014, including two titles from King: Bubble Witch Saga 2 and Candy Crush Soda Saga. In terms of mobile games, Facebook selected a set of five games based on how effectively they use Facebook login. Disney’s popular Star Wars: Commander received a nod in the category, alongside the likes of Supercell’s Boom Beach.

As for the Staff Favorites, the selected games represent a variety of genres, from tower defense and casino to strategy and shooter. Leading mobile and social developer Glu earned a place in this category with its Dino Hunter: Deadly Shores, as well as in the Best New Games category with Kim Kardashian:
Hollywood.

Finally, the Hall of Fame category returned for 2014, honoring games that came out before 2014, but were still popular with the Facebook community. Zynga is responsible for two of the five Hall of Fame games: Zynga Poker and Words with Friends.

2,Backflip Studios and Hand Circus have announced the release of their new mobile adventure game: Seabeard. The game places players in the role of the grandchild of a famous sea captain, lost at sea years ago. Gamers find themselves placed in charge of Accordia, a once peaceful village, as they’re challenged with restoring the town and continuing their grandfather’s work in uniting the world’s different tribes.

Seabeard offers 3D gameplay similar to that of console games, and players tap on the ground (and items within the environment) to move around. Key characters offer quests for the player to complete. These may be fetch quests or building quests, as examples, with each providing different rewards.

Players recruit crew members over time, who can help players build, fight, fish, forge and more. An angler, for instance, can be used to unlock the fishing mini-game, which has players tapping on the water to cast their line, and then spinning the reel to bring the fish to shore. Other key items may be freely available, and are found lying on the ground (as an example). Different combinations of items are required to outfit stalls and shops back in Accordia, or complete quests.(source:insidemobileapps.com

3,Capcom Europe has a new CEO today as Kunio Neo makes way for new boss Hiroshi Tobisawa.

Tobisawa is an internal promotion, having previously held the positions of president and managing corporate officer of Capcom US, director of overseas business and, most recently, director of Capcom Asia. He takes over the European CEO position after two years in the job for Mr Neo.

“It is with great sadness that I announce today that I am to leave Capcom. I am incredibly proud to have had the chance to work with the team at Capcom Europe over the last two years,” said Neo. “My successor, Hiroshi Tobisawa, has a long and distinguished record working at Capcom and I look forward to seeing what the company goes on to achieve under his management.”

“It is an honour to be taking over from Kunio Neo whom I would like to thank for all his efforts in recent years, said Tobisawa. “I am looking forward to working with the various teams across Europe to continue to build on our success as we look to the future.”

Capcom has recently stirred some controversy by announcing that Street Fighter V will be a PS4 and PC exclusive, eliciting an apology from Xbox head Phil Spencer.(source:gamesindustry.biz

4,Social and mobile game developer Plarium has announced it has reached a major milestone to end the year, as its titles have surpassed 130 million players across Facebook, iOS, Android and VK.com. Since the company’s foundation in 2009, the developer has released several hits on Facebook, including Total Domination, Magecraft, Pirates: Tides of Fortune and others.

Most recently, the company’s Sparta: War of Empires [pictured] was selected by Facebook as one of the best new games on the platform for 2014. The massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game (MMORTS) launched on Facebook in March 2014, and takes players to ancient Greece, where they create a city-state and protect it from the Persian threat.

“When we first launched Plarium, we wanted to break the mold – moving away from casual games and bringing a hardcore gaming experience to new platforms,” said Plarium co-founder and CMO Gabi Shalel, in a statement. “Since then, we have now grown the company’s presence to four studios spanning Europe to support our large and dedicated fan base around the globe.”(source:insidesocialgames.com

5,High School Story developer Pixelberry Studios has released its newest game on mobile devices, Hollywood U: Rising Stars. The game sees players enrolling in Hollywood University, “the school for stars,” as they become a director, movie star or fashionista, and build their entourage by recruiting new students to the school. The gameplay is similar to that of High School Story, but with a focus on living the life of an A-Lister, rather than high school academics.

In Hollywood U: Rising Stars, players complete story-based quests as their character trains in the speciality they’ve chosen (directing, for instance). Other students can be recruited to the school, with each having their own “type.” While players can choose to be one of three basic types, additional students come in a wider variety, ranging from reality TV stars and action heroes to models, agents and more.

Users can either purchase new students directly from the store (many are premium), or recruit them for free by having students of specific types party at Club VIP. The resulting student will have the same type, or a mix of their types. For instance, a party with a movie star and a director might result in an agent, and so on.(source:insidemobileapps.com
